2 . HARDWARE General Introduction Allectra uses the International System of Stainless Steel Flanges bolted together to trap an Oxygen Free Copper gasket which forms the Vacuum Seal. These flanges are bakeable to 0 C and suitable for pressures down to - mbar. Allectra's flanges are compatible with the Varian Conflat and other manufacturer's flanges for sizes up to DN00. Since 00 the ISO norm ISO- specifies flanges from to 00. Some non-standardized sizes are still available from various sources. Materials for Flanges flangesaremadefromforgedbilletsorbarof Stainless Steel. Materials L(.0) is a high quality stainless steel with good welding characteristics and relatively low magnetic permeability. LN(.) is a Nitrogen enhanced version of L. It has very low magnetic permeability and is suitable for applications where magnetic effects must be avoided. Flanges bigger than 0 are made out of forged billets. 0(.0) is a general purpose Stainless Steel widely usedin HighVacuumwhichhasahighermagnetic permeability and poor welding characteristics. Aluminium to Stainless Steel Bi-metal flanges are flanges which can be welded directly to Aluminium tube(see Section ).
