Happy September from Missoula, Montana! Fred and I attended Wing Ding in Billings for a couple of days and are now on our way to Oregon and Washington so we can add two more stars to our United States map of states we ve visited on our bike. After reading the reviews, the Lolo Pass road going across Idaho sounds to be promising with beautiful sweeping curves. For those of you who haven t heard, Wing Ding 39 will be held in Grapevine, Texas on August 29 to September 2, Next year is also GWRRA s 40 th anniversary, so I m sure there will be many great things happening in this great association. The new International Couple of the Year was selected on the Tuesday before the start of Wing Ding. They are Steve and Carolyn Cotton from Oklahoma. They are retired school teachers and will do a fine job of representing GWRRA. - Continued on Page 2 Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge

3 GWRRA Directors Ray & Sandy Garris Region E Directors Bob & Nicki Fowkes MN District Directors Joe & Jan Marek From your Chapter R Educator Dean Plank I cannot believe that it is September already. Hopefully we have a few more weeks of riding, which will include some color rides through our glorious state. This brings me to this month s article. After much deliberation I decided to write about riding with a passenger. All of us do it at some time or another, with a wide variety of experienced passengers. Taking a passenger on the back of your motorcycle can be a very pleasant experience or a terrifying ordeal, depending on the experience, yours as well as your passenger s. Having a passenger on the back of your bike can affect the way it handles. Even a small person will make a difference in how your bike handles because of the portion of the weight. Adding any significant amount of weight, for example, a grown adult can affect how your bike handles in a corner, the amount of throttle you need to use on a hill, the acceleration to get up to speed, and the required stopping distance will be greater at any speed. A passenger who has never been on a motorcycle needs to know what to do and not to do. A passenger doesn t have much to do on the back of a motorcycle but there are a few things that they should know before starting out. I recommend having a talk with a passenger before they get on the bike. I learned from an experience I had a few years ago. 1. A motorcycle has to lean into a corner, lean with me not against me, but don t over lean to see what is happening in that corner. Turning and cornering probably causes the most apprehension at least in the beginning. This is where your passenger can help you drive. Your passenger needs to move with you when cornering. The most effective method is for the passenger to hold on to you tight and lean into the corner with you. You both move together as one. The passenger should look over the shoulder in the direction of the turn. For example, when turning right, the pilot and bike lean to the right, and the passenger should be looking over the pilot's right shoulder. 2. Sit as still as possible when the bike is in motion, don t make any sudden moves. This is the experience I was talking about. A passenger got on my bike and I knew this person to be a fairly novice rider. As we were heading down the highway the passenger noticed her pant leg was up over her boot. Yea you guessed it she suddenly leaned down to put that pant leg over her boot. You see when she did that my bike went from the right lane to the left lane just like that. I calmly told her not to do that again and explained more when we stopped for the first time. The rest of the ride went better because I explained to her what was expected of her as a passenger. 3. The passenger needs to sit still when the bike is stopped as to not unbalance the bike. 4. Make sure to tell your passenger that they do not need to put her feet down when you come to a stop. And not to grab your arms or shoulders while riding as that is what you use to control the motorcycle. 5. According to Minnesota law the co-rider, whether a grown adult or child, must be able to sit in the seat and be flat footed on the passenger foot pads. Communication in one of the most important aspects of riding with a passenger, before as well as during the ride. I know most of us have helmets with intercom systems in them but say you have a passenger that doesn t have that capability you will need to develop hand signals. For example, you could agree that a shoulder tap or a certain number of taps could mean, Please slow down, or I need to ask you something. Even pointing to the side of the road could mean please pull over or I need to take a break. - Continued on Page 4 Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge 3
4 - Continued from Page 3 You should encourage your passenger to be open with you. Let you know how they feel, and do whatever it takes to reassure them. Many of potential co-riders have been scared away from ever riding again from a bad first experience. Example, my granddaughter loves to ride on the back of my bike, not on major roads, just in town. However, my daughter-in-law was scared badly on her first ride, so she is deathly afraid of motorcycles. No matter how much I assure her I don t know if I will ever be able to take my granddaughter on a long ride. So my suggestion is to take it nice and easy with a new co-rider. After the ride it is a good idea for the passenger and rider to have a discussion about how the ride went; was the passenger comfortable with the ride (the speed, the distance/ time between stops, the seat, their overall comfort level etc.) Most riders can go a lot further between stops than their passengers because they are usually more used to riding, as well as the rider seat could be more comfortable than the diminutive passenger seats offered on a lot of current bikes. Now for that sore subject that some passengers may not want to hear about. Encourage your passenger to wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear. At a minimum I recommend a novice passenger to wear an approved helmet, jeans and over the ankle boots. If a person doesn t have the proper gear insist that they wear the minimum. Nothing bothers me more that to see a motorcycle with a rider and co-rider and the rider is decked out in all the safety gear, helmet, jacket, pants, boots and gloves and the passenger without a helmet, wearing a tank top, shorts and a pair of flip flops. That tells me the rider doesn t care at all what happens to his passenger if he was to go down. Riding two up can be both fun and exhilarating if done correctly. Remember you want your passenger to enjoy riding motorcycle as much as you do. Above all, strive to give your passenger a good two-up experience; plenty of co-riders become riders themselves, and nothing kills the desire to ride more quickly than a bad co-riding experience. As always, Have Fun and Ride Safe Dean Plank GWRRA MN-R Chapter Educator Gale Heidecker volunteered to carry the MN flag for opening ceremonies at Wing Ding in Billings, MT Fred Rennpferd, Robin Pettit, Vicki Holst and Al Horejsi volunteering at the ticket sales booth during Wing Ding in Billings, MT Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge 4
5 Spotlight on Members Alan (Bart) Bartholmey MN Chapter R s ongoing series of spotlighting our members continues, this month with Alan Bartholmey, Bart as we all know him. Bart works for Prescher/Willette Seeds out of Delavan, MN. He has been with them for over forty years. He makes his home in Winnebago, MN. Bart owns several motorcycles, but the one he rides is a 2012 Honda Gold Wing, black and grey in color. He also owns a Cycle Mate Cargo trailer and a Roll-a-Home brand camper. He enjoys Sturgis and the Davis Rally in New Hampton, IA. Bart rides as often as he can and then switches to the snowmobile in the winter. Bart has been a member of GWRRA since the late 90 s. When asked how many years Bart has been riding, he said too many. Bart has three grandchildren. Thank you, Bart Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge 5
