I can't believe how quickly this summer has passed us by and we are now planning our motorcycle adventures for next season. This year we where pledged with sprained ankles and unfortunately our time in the saddle was a bust. But tonight we did the early registration for Wing Ding 38. We are really looking forward and pray that we will be able to take part in Wing Ding next Sept in Billings, Montana. Our last Wing Ding was in 2007 and it brings back fantastic memories of great riding, great camping, great people, lots of motorcycles, fun activities, excellent seminars and tons of shiny chrome. There are a few things that I will pass along as things to remember when travelling on any trip away from home. - Leave a contact phone number written down at home on your kitchen table ( in an emergency they had to call a friend to find us) - Contact your credit card company and share your travel plans ( I had too much charged up on credit card before going to wingding) - Make sure your insurance is up to date, out of province medical, and bike (I forgot that my insurance just ran out) - Carry all your medications with you (I suffered 4 days of withdrawal waiting for medication to arrive) - Check that you have your passports ( or you will have to get a really good friend break into your house and catch up with you to deliver passports ) - Have a few pairs of earplugs with you (because if you are in close quarters sharing rooms or campsites with other friends, snoring noises can keep you awake all night) - Have a proper working GPS ( because leading a ride with half the letters not working on the GPS is really challenging) -Do a little research to see what route the group will be taking ( or risk going the Wrong Way) - Stay hydrated to help keep your mind clear (and need to stop from time to time to let your co-rider pee) - Stay hydrated after you are done riding at those over night stops ( so that you can play great games like bocce!) - Always wear your riding gear all the time ( because if you haven't gotten close to the pavement yet, it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN? ) Or Angela and Glenn at Wishing you all a Great October! glenn-meyer@hotmail.com Your Directors Glenn and Angela

C/index.html Group Rides There have been some queries as to whether we are still having our breakfast get togethers on every other Sunday. Yes, we should start that back up again. The next Sunday for breakfast will be October 17 th. The location will be the Well at Chances Casino in Chilliwack for the next one and we will discuss the future locations at the next monthly meeting on the 19 th. Riding looks like it will only be the collector plates until spring arrives along with the insurance. If we plan a ride, we will let you know in advancealthough sometimes we can t give you a lot of notice. Riding by the seat of our pants comes to mind. Oh well, it works for some. 3 Musings from a New Addict by Jackie Gartner Helmet, check. Jacket, check. Gloves, check. Pants, check. Cute boots, check. Goldwing, awwww check! The season could likely be close to done for this year.. maybe. I knew I loved riding before we started riding this year, but really I had not been on the bike that much so it was a new love. You know, the kind where you get roses and notes and phone calls with endearing messages? Then there is the kind of love that is a learning kind we ve all be there. You know each other enough to know you love the one your with, but there are still new things that are cropping up and you just smile as you mutter under your breath ohhh really! Then there is the kind where you are comfortable and just know that despite the toothpaste in the sink and the toilet paper roll the wrong way that you have found your forever friend. Well I have gone from the new love of riding and well into the learning kind. I have researched helmets, jackets, gloves, boots and pants and have found a way to stay warm and just sit back and relax. Ok, so the relax is coming. We had our first spill, nothing serious but by my reaction and the ringing of my voice in Darwin s ear through the headset you would have thought we went off of a cliff! A stopped topple. Chris says there are two kinds of Goldwing riders, those that have spilled and those that are going to. So, we graduated to the have done. Darwin said I am doing better too on the back. I don t fight with the bike any more as he leans left and I want to lean right. Pretty good hey I m learning. Oh yes, and stopping. Now there is progress! He said I don t bang helmets any more when we stop. Ok, so I was anticipating stopping sooner than he was stopping. I m learning. One thing I don t have to learn is the joy and overwhelming sense of freedom riding on the back and looking around and really seeing the world around us. The familiar roads seem new, and the new roads seem exciting. We haven t ventured on a really long haul this year. You know Darwin had to break me in as co-rider, kind of like you have to break in a new bike. Low speed and not too far too fast! All I know is that the sounds of Billings Montana ring through my head from time to time. So yes, I am.. we are BC s newest addicts. Not to drugs, or booze or other crazy things but to the feeling of the breeze in our face and the true sense of freedom. I have a ways to go to get to the comfortable kind of love with riding but something tells me by this time next year I am going to be looking for longer and more adventuresome rides! Get out when you can before you have to tuck your bike away for winter. We are going to try see you out there. Just look for the lady with the big smile plastered all over her face that s me. 4 OCTOBER REGION REPORT Wow, where does the time go! We have had a lot of excitement getting our Wing Ding Registrations and Accommodations organized. I don t know how many have come across my computer but it is a lot and that makes me HAPPY! We are going to have a great presence in Billings! There will be Rider Ed courses, Drill Teams, Top Gun contests and Education Seminars squeezed in between all of the other fun activities. Billings is a great party town and will open their doors for us to be welcome. Make sure you come as we don t know when Wing Ding will be back in our area. There will be a Canadian Dinner during the convention. Plans are being made and the location will be sent out as soon as possible. This year we had a German style dinner with about 65 attending. I think it will be at a Steakhouse. The Region J rally is going to be held in the Red Deer area. It is a leisurely drive from there to Billings and we have 3 days to do it! Of course we are doing a migration contest and winner will take all! We have asked each chapter to organize an event or activity at our Region rally. So far Innisfail and Calgary have jumped in with offers. We sure appreciate them! Yeah! I am going to be partly out of commission during October and November with medical issues. The rest of the Region Team will still be hare and doing a great job! As we transition into our non riding season we will still get opportunities to ride the odd day. Please remember to be safe! Watch out for leaves and shaded areas that could have frost. We want to see each and every one of you in the new year! Rider safe and happy Con Williams Region J Director TIPS FOR BEING A GOOD PASSENGER Because so many riders, especially couples who tour, prefer to ride two-up, learning to be a good passenger is a crucial part of riding safely and riding right. Here are some tips that every passenger and rider with a passenger should keep in mind when riding two-up. Riding two-up is a great way to share the experience of the open road, but it's important to remember that both the rider and passenger play a role in maintaining a safe and fun riding experience. Be sure the rider is ready for you to get on the bike. Once on, sit still. A shift in your weight can drop the bike, especially at a stop. Once riding, lean with the bike. Looking over the rider's inside shoulder in a curve will nearly always provide the correct angle. If you are to be the navigator, be sure to give directions soon enough that your rider has plenty of time to maneuver. Pay attention to the rider s physical signals. You can often predict and brace for a quick stop just by feeling the rider's muscles tighten. Communicate. If you need to stop, let the rider know. Take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) beginner course. Better yet, you and your rider should consider taking the course together. Many non-riders say they gained valuable knowledge in the rider course that made them better passengers. Submitted by Chris Hazlewood-Chapter Educator

5 Reno Rendezvous as I saw it! Part four in the series and the last instalment in our Reno Rendezvous segments. We wound up the trip with a fairly quick three days back to the Wack and back to reality. It was another memorable trip with our Goldwing friends and certainly not the last. Robyn MacRae
