1 Goldwing Road Riders Association OK-E Chapter Newsletter Oct Tulsa Oklahoma Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge Each month Chapter E holds a fun gathering on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month. We meet at the Golden Corral Restaurant on E. 21 st and S. Memorial, Tulsa Oklahoma. Come and eat at 6pm and stay for the gathering beginning 7pm. 2 September started off as a busy month. We visited Chapter K early one Saturday morning for their breakfast in Ponca City. After a fun gathering we headed on down the road to Woolaroc just outside of Bartlesville. What a fun and interesting tour through the museum. Lots of Oklahoma history stored here. Eighteen of us gathered at Colton s Steakhouse for an enjoyable meal and good conversation. Twenty Chapter members ended our month in Lawton Oklahoma to attend the Oklahoma District Rally. Our Chapter won 1 st Place for the Theme Table, 2 nd Place for Mascot (Baldwin the eagle in his swimsuit) and 2 nd Place in the Banner Competition. Hurray for Chapter E. Thank you, Thank you everyone who worked the Registration Table and helped set up the contest tables. Chapter E ROCKS!! Fun Times at the District Rally

3 Baldwin Goes To the Oklahoma District Rally Hello Fellow Wingers! Well we just got back from the Oklahoma District Rally and boy did we have one heck of a wild few days. We left Tulsa on Wednesday afternoon by car because of all the paraphernalia that Kathy had to haul down to Lawton. I woke up early on Wednesday rip roaring and ready to go but you know how Richard and Kathy are (enough said). I wanted to ride on the bike with Richard but instead of riding on the bike, they stuck me in that nasty ole trailer, I guess that they figured that I would fly off? Go figure! Well anyway after a long arduous day of packing we finally got to leave. We arrived in Lawton and got checked into the room. Boy was that room nice! Then we went down to set up the display table. Once they stuck me on that table they made me stay there. I guess they were afraid that if I went wandering around I would get lost so there is where I stayed for all three days. The Opening Ceremonies were totally awesome. The Color Guard brought in the flags in and when the command was given to present colors three guys sitting around a Big Ole Drum started pounding on it and rambling in some foreign language which I believe was either Apache or Comanche. Anyway, the crowd in the room which numbered around 99 according to what John Irons told me stood at attention and they said the pledge. The prayer was done in Native Tongue and then English. The Colors were retired. This Big Ole Indian Fella (I think he was the chief) told a story about Comanche History and presented some interesting facts. Then the Mayor of Lawton and Assistant Manager for the hotel both got up and greeted everyone and you know how it goes all the District Officers had to get up one by one and put their two cents worth in before they turned everyone loose, I was hoping to get to go on a ride to the Wichita Mountains and Fort Sill but Noooooooooooo, I had to stay behind and guard the table. Well there were bikes of every color and configuration outside. One of the trailers I was told was made out of an old Frigidaire Refrigerator. One of the valets that has a Harley Trike brought it over to where all the bikes were parked. I guess he figured that if he parked it in amongst the Goldwings that some of the wing classiness would rub off. I tried to convince him that he needed to trade it in on a Goldwing but I don t think that he cottoned to that idea? He was a nice fella and all. At least he rides and doesn t look down on us Wingers. A lot of people came by and admired the worked that had been done on the table and talked to me. Rex was over at the table next to ours and I m glad that he was a good ways away because the

4 entire time I was there he kept looking over and licking his lips and saying Lunch! I just wish that Char had put him on the other end of their table. Let s just suffice to say that if you weren t the at the Oklahoma District Rally, You missed out on a really good time. Well I must have done something right because in the Chapter Banner Contest We got 2 nd Place, for the Chapter Mascot Contest We got 2 nd Place ( I protested but it didn t do any good Maybe Next Year?) and for the Chapter Table Theme Contest we Got 1 st Place! Congratulations to Lloyd and Cindy Russell for putting this together. Even though I didn t get to get out and wander around much or go to the casino, I must say that the Hotel was one of the nicest that I have ever been in and you couldn t have found a nicer, more friendly staff anywhere! Well several from Chapter E are gearing up to leave on Wednesday to go to the Big Balloon Festival that they hold in Albuquerque, New Mexico each October. I wish that they would take me but as of this writing I don t think anything has been decided about that. I m keeping my talons crossed in hopes that they will take me along.

I will start out this month listing the past Chapter Directors. If you know of any directors, dates or facts that I have left out or I have incorrect, please feel free to send in the corrections. Little Known Facts Chapter E Chapter E was chartered into the Region H and the Oklahoma District in Broken Arrow Oklahoma in March of Today we have established Tulsa Oklahoma as our home teritory. Our officers are: Directors Kathy and Richard Oakes. Mike and Sandi Miller, Assistant Directors. Tom Hankins, Treasure, Roger and Annie Good, Membership Enhancement Coordinators, along with Michael and Ramona McCauley as Ride Coordinators. Our support team consists of Sandi Miller as secretary-newsletter coordinator, Ramona McCauley as scrapbook coordinator, Mary McClellan as Sunshine Girl and last but not least Ken Hackl as the Goofy coordinator. We have many positions open and just waiting for you to step up and say I want to have fun and play. CHAPTER E DIRECTORS ??? 6 Riding with a passenger Motorman s Tips, Tricks, and Techniques Riding with a Passenger Sometimes what seems to me to be a very easy thing, others find to be the exact opposite and that s only because some people overthink such things and believe it can t be that simple. I m talking about riding a motorcycle with a passenger. You wouldn t believe all the questions I get on this subject. I m going to lay it out right here in the easiest way possible. Let s start with how the passenger should mount the bike. The simplest way I find is for the passenger to get on the bike first. Here s how it works. The passenger mounts from the high side, while the bike is on the kickstand. The passenger puts their right foot on the floorboard, swings the left leg over the tour pack and first sits on the rider s seat. Then, simply scoots up onto the passenger seat. The rider mounts the same way. Once both the rider and the passenger are seated on the bike, the passenger leans forward, close to the rider. The rider then turns the handlebars full lock right, and pushes the bike straight up and puts the kickstand up. I use this method at my class as I often put students on their own bike and ride them through an exercise to show them what the bike feels like as it leans through the turns. Most of these riders are men in their fifty s and sixties and not very flexible. This method works perfect for me, try it. I also get a lot of questions about what a passenger should and shouldn t do while on the bike. Again, I ll simplify it. When making tight, low speed turns, the passenger should scoot up close to the rider. This puts most of the weight in the center of the bike and makes maneuvering much easier. This also works well on winding roads even at higher speeds. The passenger should NOT lean in the opposite direction of the rider. It s also a good idea for the passenger to inform the rider if they must adjust their position on the seat. (No sudden moves). On the same subject for the rider, if you buy a new heavyweight touring bike like an HD Ultra, you may be tempted to put the wife on the back and take her for a ride as soon as you get home from the dealer. DON T do it. Get used to the new bike on your own. Pull into a parking lot and practice your low speed skills before allowing a passenger on the bike. Practice your braking, then swerving and leaning and U-turns for at least an hour on your new ride. If you can t do any of these maneuvers by yourself, putting a passenger on the bike will only make things worse. A little common sense goes a long way.
