Directors Curve Riding season is here and we are ready. After a long winter and a rainy start of spring, we finally have weather you can enjoy riding in. Pawnee Bills ride was super. The weather was warm and the wind blew a calm breeze. I realized a lot of history from touring the beautiful Lilly Mansion. The Spring Fling is coming up fast and we are riding to Hot Springs Arkansas. This will be a fun ride seeing all the trees and grass turning green and flowers blooming. This month we are including a 3 month calendar in the newsletter. This is so you will have a heads up on upcoming events for the chapter. May is going to be a full month, along with June and July, but participating and having fun is why we are all here. Remember Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Tulsa s Mayor GT Bynum signed our proclamation to declare May as Motor Awareness month in Tulsa. Now it s our turn to get the word out on safe riding and driving. Check out the calendar and attend a Motor Awareness event. This month GWRRA President Anita Alkire announced that a new program is coming about with GWRRA and Honda of America starting a new program of every time they sell a motorcycle they will offer the new owner a 4 month registration into GWRRA free. This is a great way for us to obtain new members in GWRRA. We know all of the great benefits that we get in GWRRA and want others to come and join us. All MEC s in a few months will start receiving a lot of new members that they can call and have them join us in our fun that we have. There are a lot of members that we have on or member list that just need a call from us to have them come and join us for a fun ride. Give them a call! Give to Our Troops Drive comes to an end. Chapter E s Reason to Ride Chapter E has been collecting items for the Blue Star Mothers since January. We were able to collect and deliver 3 full outdoor garbage bags to The Blue Star Mothers organization. April was our last month to collect. Thank you Chapter E for all of your generous donations. I know our troops will be happy to receive your donation. If you know of a charity that you would like Chapter E to help in collections, please let us know.
May is Motor Awareness Month for Tulsa Oklahoma On Friday, April 27, 2018, Chapter E made history in Tulsa Oklahoma. At the request of GWRRA OK-E, Tulsa s Mayor GT Bynum sign a proclamation declaring May as Motor Awareness Month for Tulsa. What does this mean for Tulsa? By having safe motorcycle riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our city streets and state s highways. Chapter E has taken steps to get the word out. To kick off the month, Chapter E will be having Goldwing night at Port City Raceways on the night of May 12 with a Goldwing Bike/Trike display, a booth with literature and fun things for the kids on race night. A Road Captains Safety course will be offered on May 19. More signage is going up in member s yards. (If you can put a sign up in your front yard please let Kathy know and she will get you a sign). May is the start of riding season and we must get started getting the word out that we are out there to safely share the road.

Muskogee Azalea Parade This month Chapter E was invited to ride in the Azalea Parade in Muskogee OK. The morning started early and we had to be in Muskogee by 9:45 am. Looking outside the sun was coming up but frost was on the windows. Oh no, it was going to be a cold one today. Going out the door, bundled up in layers I kept telling myself I got this, but swinging my leg over the seat of the trike seemed a bit more difficult this particle morning. My leg just wouldn t go up high enough to swing over the top of the seat. Anxious and in a hurry, Richard tugged and pulled until he had me upon the seat. I tried to explain to him that I had on so many clothes I couldn t move. Uh huh, was all I heard over the intercom. I soon realized why he wasn t talking when he took off from that first stop sign from the house. That cold wind hit your face and took your breath away. He soon warmed up enough to say such things to me as Good grief, whose idea was this anyway and do you realize what you have gotten us into now? All this time I am sitting back enjoying the ride because I bundled and layered up on the clothes more than he. He soon mellowed out when we joined the others for the cool and extremely windy ride down the turnpike which is another story in itself. Ken Frazier was waiting for us at the parade line up. Six brave bikes showed for the ride in the parade. Ken was able to pull off some of his magic again this year and the Gold Wings were the second group behind the Sheriff who was leading the parade. Now parades are my favorite thing to do while riding on a motorcycle. Seeing the little kids with cold red faces, waving their little hearts out at you make me laugh and laugh to see them chasing after the candy! The crowd was great considering the cold weather and everyone was having a great time like we were. We got thru the parade and Ken led us to a great Mexican restaurant. Yep, we had to go and eat to warm up. And what better way to warm up than hot Mexican food. After lunch we planned to go and see the azaleas in bloom down at the Honor Heights Park, but the flowers had not bloomed yet for the season. Seems the azaleas knew to stay inside too. The clouds looked like rain coming soon so a quick decision to head on home was made. But the day was fun and I look forward to doing the parade next year. Thanks Muskogee! 7 Just a little humor from David Zizzo.. Motorcycle law escapes notice. Many bikers are unaware of 'renegade' road status David Zizzo Published: July 17, :00 AM CDT Updated: July 17, :00 AM CDT Confessions of an outlaw biker. For the last decade or so, I had been breaking the law. I'd been driving motorcycles illegally. First, let me state in my defense: 1. I wear a helmet even though the law doesn't make me; 2. I don't have a tattoo. Also, I didn't know I was a renegade. Ignorance is no excuse, of course, even if it's the best one I had. Only recently did I come to realize the rebel I was. A police officer stopped me for a traffic violation. That's when I heard for the first time the term "motorcycle endorsement." And the fact I didn't have one. And the fact I needed one. Since it was Independence Day, the officer gave me his "holiday special" - a warning. Still, this would have been easier to accept had it happened one week earlier. One week earlier I could have gone to a tag agent, signed a paper and received a motorcycle endorsement. That's because a week earlier that's all the state required, provided I swore I had ridden a motorcycle "regularly" for at least two years. I have ridden motorcycles since the Johnson administration. In the last 32 years, I've ridden dirt bikes, "pocket rockets," bullet bikes. I rode a Norton 750 to Colorado and back and drove a Suzuki 250 on a rocky pass over the Continental Divide. Since my discovery of the "M" endorsement happened after July 1, a deadline added to the law in I had to again pass a written quiz and a driving test to get on the right side of the law. Which makes me wonder: Was I the only oblivious lawbreaker out there? Are there other unknowing renegades still cruising about on some of those 53,000 motorcycles registered in Oklahoma? They also would have the test standing between them and their former law-abiding lifestyle. They also would face a possible $100 fine for driving without one. More than 140,000 Oklahomans have the M, state officials say. Officials figure everyone knows about the M by now. They said each driver should have received one license renewal notice - back in the early 1990s when the state had money to send them - that mentioned various changed license requirements. Those affected things like driving large trucks, transporting hazardous materials and driving motorcycles. Of course, officials admit, some people probably never got the notices, or they ignored them, or they read "Expiration Notice," and renewed their license without asking for the M. The M is even mentioned on the back of the Oklahoma driver's license, points out Karen Gentry, director of driver testing for the Department of Public Safety. It's in a list of endorsements that include "Tank" and "Double/Triple." It also was mentioned on mine, as I discovered when I peeled off a bar code sticker put there by a video store.
I thought I was. Holly Swinford is. Still, she thinks "there will be lots of people who will be surprised" about the M, and expiration of the test waiver. Swinford, a campaign official for an Oklahoma congressional candidate, also headed American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE), a motorcycle lobbying group. Motorcyclists who belong to groups - and there are many groups - probably know about the M. People who subscribe to motorcycle newsletters or read motorcycle chat on the Internet probably would, too. So would people who hang around motorcycle shops or use a tag agent who might have mentioned the M. However, Swinford said, GDIs might not. "Gosh-darned independents," roughly translated. People who don't join things hang with a crowd or pack up. We motorcyclists tend to have that real independent streak anyway," Swinford said. Independent. I like that. It sounds better than "stupid." The road to Oklahoma's M is a long one, complete with exemptions to exemptions. It even made outlaws of law officers. It began with a federal traffic-reform law Congress passed in That law required states to create more uniform traffic laws, like requiring a separate license or endorsement for motorcycles. Before Oklahoma adopted the new laws in January 1991, a regular operator's license was good enough to ride a motorcycle. The new laws didn't mess with some driving privileges, though. Driving motor homes the size of the USS Nimitz, for instance. When the M was first imposed, it wasn't easy getting the word out. "We even had Oklahoma City motorcycle police officers out patrolling the streets for months without the endorsement," Roberts said. It was easy for experienced bikers who heard about the M to get one. State law said public safety officials could waive tests for the M if a person showed "satisfactory proof that the applicant has regularly operated a motorcycle" for two years. Registration for a bike, for instance. Public safety officials allowed this exemption for four years, figuring every driver would get a license expiration notice once in that period. Every driver would become aware. Well, they didn't. When the exemption ended in January 1995, the problems began. "It was a very confusing thing," Roberts said. "The motorcycle thing probably caused us as much hassle and headaches as anything." Old-time bikers who missed the deadline had to again take a test many had taken when they were 14. So many bikers complained about retesting that the Legislature in 1996 "yielded to the pressure," Roberts said. Lawmakers ordered another four-year test waiver. The one that expired July 1. These days, you can still get a waiver for half the test - the driving part - but you must pay for an approved three-day motorcycle safety course. Norman McDonald, who offers one in Tulsa, said even old-time bikers need refresher courses. Even police. "They pick up bad habits, too," he said. Like driving way too close to each other, like in that old TV show about California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers. "They've seen too many 'CHiPs,'" McDonald said. Otherwise, a motorcycle renegade, oblivious or not, has two options: #1 Take the test or #2 remain forever the outlaw.

Oklahoma District Directors John & Shawn Irons May 2018 Great Things Coming Happy May to all of our Goldwing members. It seems that April came and went and as most of us know not much rain but a lot of fires throughout the state. We hope that each chapter will think of a way to have a special project for a local fire department or area that lost may animals. It was a great time going up to chapter-g in Bartlesville on April 3 rd. They had 22 people in attendance. What was great was to see 14 members from Chapter-P who rode over for the gathering. This was a different month in that so many chapters were gone to Louisiana for the Louisiana Rally. There are many rallies going on in May so we hope you will be riding to one of them. We will be heading to the Texas Rally being held May 19 th through 21 st. See you there. It was great to see Chapter-E having a T-Clock party. All chapters should do the same thing. Great Things Coming This month GWRRA President Anita Alkire announced that a new program is coming about with GWRRA and Honda of America starting a new program of every time they sell a motorcycle they will offer the new owner a 4 month registration into GWRRA free. This is a great way for us to obtain new members in GWRRA. We know all of the great benefits that we get in GWRRA and want others to come and join us. All MEC s in a few months will start receiving a lot of new members that they can call and have them join us in our fun that we have. We are also looking at retention of members that we already have. There are a lot of members that we have on or member list that just need a call from us to have them come and join us for a fun ride. Oklahoma District Serving our Chapters The Oklahoma district is having some fun things coming up in the next few months. We are planning another motorcycle training day on the bikes. This will go toward their levels program. We have obtained a location where we can have the training. We also will be having a Road Captains class May 19 th up in Tulsa. Contact Max Rowlett or CD Kathy Oakes for details. The cookout is still on but will be held sometime at the end of May in Muskogee. Chapter-K New Gathering Date Don t forget that Chapter-K Ponca City now meets on the 3 rd Saturday of each They are meeting at Frazier s Restaurant 3113 E Hwy 60 in Ponca City. They eat 8:30am and meet at 9:30am. Please put this in your newsletter of the change in and location. Now Chapter-M can visit Chapter-K. month. at date This year s Oklahoma district rally will be held in Lawton, Ok at the Apache Casino and Hotel September 27 th 29 th, Our theme will be Cruising on a Wing. The grand prize will be a $ cruise for two. Call the Apache at or
and give them the code G189GW. Visit for more information about the hotel. It s never too early getting your registration. National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Spring is now here and around the country all of the GWRRA members and all types of riders are returning to the road after a long winter. But with a sudden spike in the number of motorcycles on the road, it s a good time to remind all motorists, whether on two wheels or four, to keep a special lookout for motorcyclists. That s why May is recognized as National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This is a good time for drives to be reminded to share the road with motorcycles, and riders to be reminded to make themselves more visible to others. A good project for the Oklahoma district chapters to help get the word out is to have your city or township to proclaim May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. This should be May 1 st to May 31 st. Contact District Motorist Awareness Coordinator Kay Smith or me for help in getting your proclamation for you town. You Make the Difference GWRRA has a new program to show appreciation to members who have helped out, or done an outstanding job in some way to GWRRA. Do you have someone who you think deserves a special pin? Contact your MEC or District MEC to get the pin and certificate.
