Double gauge High-Speed electric-diesel train: increasing interoperability and scope Victorino PÉREZ FERNÁNDEZ Manager of European Affairs, Renfe, Spain 12/07/2012, Session: Rolling Stock 4 Technical development
Content High Speed and classical infrastructure context. Track gauge Signaling Electrification Solutions in place in Spain for extending the benefits of HS to classical electrified lines Extending solutions to non-electrified lines Placing in service 2
Track gauge: High Speed and classical infrastructure context With 2,183 kms (1,356 miles) Spain has the third largest HS network in the world and the largest in Europe but TP FERRO While most of the HS network is built with the European standard track gauge of 1,435 mm, the classical Iberian railroad (11,623 km or 7,222 miles) has a 1,668 mm track gauge That was one of the obstacles for extending the benefits of HS to the classical network 3
High Speed and classical infrastructure context Signaling: Most of the Spanish High Speed lines are equipped with ERMTS signaling system, levels 1 and 2, but Madrid-Seville is equipped with LZB and The classical network is mostly equipped with ASFA, but also with ATP Ebicab This is also an obstacle for interoperability 4
Electrification: High Speed and classical infrastructure context High Speed lines are electrified at 25 kv AC 50 Hz, but The classical network is electrified at 3 kv DC, and A number of classical lines and sections are not electrified This is also an obstacle for interoperability 5
Solutions in place in Spain Extending the benefits of HS to classical electrified lines through: Two Renfe train series in service, 130 and 120, able to changing the gauge of the whole train set, at a reduced speed, without stopping. The main characteristics are: - Double Gauge: 1,435 / 1,668 mm - Maximum speed: 250 KpH (155 miles) on HS lines - Multi-Signalling 220 KpH (137 miles) on classical lines - Power supply: 25 kv AC 50 Hz and 3 kv DC Gauge changers placed at the appropriate junctions between High-Speed and Classical lines S 120 S 130 Premises for gauge changing 6
Extending solutions to nonelectrified lines Transforming 15 trains S 130 into diesel-electric S 730: The two end-cars of the S 130 train are replaced by two new technical cars where the diesel engines and their associated equipment, including fuel tanks, are located. The two diesel engines produce electric power to supply the traction heads when running on non-electrified lines or sections. No need for stopping the train when changing power supply S 130 S 730 Removing the two cars mentioned, reduce the train capacity by 35 seats (15 of them business class) to 264 seats 7
Extending solutions to nonelectrified lines S 730: The two technical cars accommodate the diesel engines, fuel tanks and other equipment S 730 S 730 8
Extending solutions to nonelectrified lines S 730 train set: : Traction heads: 2 Diesel engines: 2 Length: Weight (empty): Tourist cars (6 units/train) Business class (2 units/train) Technical End-cars: 2 Cafeteria (1 / train) m 361 tons 216 seats Prepared for single or multiple unit configurations 49 seats (including 1 PRM) Dual Gauge: Signalling: Electrical mode Diesel Mode Maximum speed: 1,435 / 1,668 mm ERTMS, STM-LZB, ATP Ebicab and ASFA Digital 25 kv AC 50 Hz 4,800 kw installed 3 kv DC 4,000 kw Regenerative braking Two diesel-electric generators 2,400 kw 240 KpH (149 miles) at 25 kv AC 50 Hz 220 KpH (137 miles) at 3 kv DC 180 KpH (112 miles) with diesel power supply 9
Placing in service Schedule: On December, 29 th 2009, it was approved to transforming 15 S 130 train sets, out of 45, into S 730. On June, 17 th 2012, 6 train sets start service Madrid-Galicia 3 more train sets are already transformed and currently on the testing phase Santiago de Compostela Pontevedra Vigo A Coruña Ourense Valladolid Segovia Madrid 6 more train sets will be transformed as of October 2012, in order to serve other Spanish regions Conventional Lines High Speed lines 10
Placing in service Services with the new S 730 rolling stock: Madrid- Ourense: Madrid Santiago Madrid - A Coruña Madrid Vigo Madrid Pontevedra Santiago de Compostela Pontevedra About 2.4 million people are living close to the areas served by the new rolling stock as of June 2012 Vigo A Coruña Ourense Valladolid Segovia Madrid Conventional Lines High Speed lines 11
