Haramain High Speed Rail The location 2
3 Short History of the Project Haramain High Speed Rail 2003: The Government s decision to implement the Haramain High Speed Rail as a public funded project was to expedite its execution. The appropriate way to implement this huge prestigious Project was to split it in segments and phases. The Project is being executed in two Phases. Phase - 1 o 2009 awarding: Package 1 relates to the Construction of Route Civil Works to Saudi Consortium o 2010 awarding: Package 2 relates to the Construction of Stations to Saudi Consortia awarding: Phase - 2 includes the entire remaining infrastructure works not included in Phase 1 (i.e. Track, Signaling, Telecommunication, Electrification), Rolling Stock and Operations & Maintenance Contract for 12 years to Spanish consortium
The Route Alignment KAIA Jeddah KAEC Makkah 4 Madinah KAIA: King Abdul-Aziz International Airport KAEC: King Abdullah Economic City
Phase 1 Package 1: Construction of Route Civil Works (Alrajhi Consortium) The scope of works without limitation includes the following: Excavation: Estimated quantity of 54,102,758 m3 Embankment: Estimated quantity of 63,588,025 m3 Sub Ballast: Estimated quantity of 1,323,925 m3 Bridges / Tunnels: 137 ea km Culverts: 847 ea. 5
6 Phase 1 Package 2: Construction of Stations The HHR Project links the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and KAEC, a passenger station is currently being constructed in each of these cities. Each station consists of, in addition to the main building and arrival & departure concourses - a mosque, fire station, helipad, car parks, lounges for VIPs and retail areas. Total build up area for Stations Makkah 447,600 sq. m (SBG group) Jeddah 461,000 sq. m (Saudi Oger) KAEC 274,000 sq. m (Saudi Oger) Madinah 172,000 sq. m (SBG group) 5 th station at main terminal of King Abdul-Aziz international airport (KAIA) is under construction by the airports authority. 6 th station at pilgrims terminal (KAIA) is under planning. Capacity of the Stations - The Stations were designed to meet the Non-Ramadan Friday Peak Hour traffic for the year 2042.
Phase 1 Package 2: Construction of Stations (Foster design) 7
8 Phase 2 includes but not limited to: Operation Control Center (OCC) and Back up OCC; Electrification, 25 Kv 60 Hz Catenary system ERTMS Level 2 Signaling system (Dimetronic) 449 km Mostly Ballasted Track only specific areas have Slab track; GSM-R Telecommunications; Automatic fare collection; Workbases and Maintenance bases; 1 Main Workshops and 2 small Depots; Other technical buildings; Procurement rolling stock (36 train sets from Talgo) ; and Operation and Maintenance for a period of 12 years (Renfe/Adif).
HHR Talgo trains 9
Project Main Characteristics Design speed km/h and Operational speed km/h. Latest signaling and communications systems - ERTMS Level 2. Safest mode of high speed trains with the latest technologies. The travel time between Jeddah and Makkah would be 30 minutes. The travel time between Makkah and Madinah would be 2 h. Five iconic passenger stations: Makkah Station 10 platform tracks Jeddah Station 8 platform tracks King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) Station 6 platform tracks Madinah Station 6 platform tracks King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) Station 6 (to be confirmed) platform tracks 10

Foreseen rail services Train Stopping Pattern for HHR on Friday, Peak Hour 14
Estimated ridership Traffic demand Haramain High Speed Rail At opening year: 114,000/124,000 (Friday peak) one way passenger daily between the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah. In year 2042: 188,000/210,000 passengers daily. Total expected ridership for the 12 years (pilgrims not included) First class 320,247,326. Second class 911,473,157. Total 1,231,720, Pilgrims each year from 1.8 to 2.05 million in 1 month (Pilgrim s season).
Project Present status and foreseen next steps Civil works (Phase 1 Package 1): will be completed by the end of 2014, all sections. Stations (Phase 1 Package 1): will be completed before the end of Rolling stock and systems: operation of trains on the Northern area will be by the end Power supply will be completed before the end
Main technological innovations to be expected HHR will be mainly using proven technology: Talgo high speed train model 112 running in Spain ERMTS level 2 GSM-R The technology providers are expected to be innovative to overcome the challenging weather conditions: sand storm, high temperature, high humidity etc. 17
Main identified risks and threats Reasons of delay: o Land Acquisition o Delay in progress of works o Lack of Contractor s resources o Increased Scope Weather conditions: o Sand storm o High temperature o High humidity 18
Main arguments in favor of the Project Connecting: two holy mosques Two international airports: Jeddah & Madinah KAEC Two sea ports Two touristic hubs: KAEC/Jeddah Two industrial areas: KAEC & Jeddah
