1 AFTERSALES BULLETIN FROM THE PARTS & SERVICE DIVISION Date 02/10/2015 Ref 12/2015 INTERNAL DISTRIBUTION TO BE CARRIED OUT BY THE DEALERSHIP PSA APPROVED R-1234YF AIR CONDITIONING CHARGING STATIONS With sales of nearly 100,000 PSA vehicles in the UK which are now equipped with the latest R-1234yf air conditioning system, it is important that all dealers have available the necessary re-charging equipment. The new R-1234yf refrigerant MUST not be mixed with the old R134a refrigerant and current R134a charging stations cannot be used with the new refrigerant. With the higher cost of the R1234yf refrigerant it is important that any chosen recharging station is as efficient and accurate in its operation as possible. All R-1234yf recharging stations must meet the SAE J2843 standard, which covers recovery levels and charging levels. The standard requires a minimum of 95% of the refrigerant must be recovered from the vehicle and the charging rate must be a minimum of + 25g. However, the higher the percentage of 1234yf refrigerant recovered and the lower the recharge rate the more cost effective the equipment will be in operation. To help choose the most suitable recharging station, PSA Peugeot Citroën has tested a number of different units to assess their overall running costs, efficiency and accuracy. Based on these areas, the Ecotechnics ECKTWIN-PSA Dual-Gas unit, ECK4000-PSA and recently introduced ECK3900 Premium HFO PSA units have been given full PSA technical approval as they all meet the legal, maintenance, quality and operational requirements of the new refrigerant. Accuracy in Recovery All units allow the refrigerant present in the air conditioning system to be recovered; the standard requires 95%. This will reduce operating costs and allow the investment in the charging station to be recouped sooner (between six months and one year depending on the number of recharges carried out. Page 1 of 3

2 Accuracy in Charging All units allow charging of the R-1234yf refrigerant in an air conditioning system, with an accuracy of + 15g; the standard requires + 25g. This allows the quality and accuracy of the charge specified by the manufacturer to be guaranteed, as well as allowing accurate records on consumption for the legislation on traceability. Furthermore, this accuracy avoids financial losses compared to a station that puts in too much refrigerant into each vehicle. Accuracy in the Leak Test All units benefit from an automatic operation cycle, developed in partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën. This includes a leak test which holds the vehicle s air conditioning system under a vacuum. This test guarantees that the station will not charge the refrigerant system, if there are any leaks present. Safety All units meet all the technical standards required and allow technicians to work safely on R-1234yf air conditioning systems, on current and future vehicles. Cycle Time Thanks to the high capacity vacuum pumps (100 litres per minute) and an automatic process developed in partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën, the operation time is optimised and drying of the circuit is also improved. A quick turn-around time allows a higher number of air conditioning jobs to be done per day and assures competitiveness with multi-brand repairers. The ECKTWIN-PSA Dual-Gas station also provides the added bonus of providing the ability to recharge current R-134a systems independently of the R-123yf functionality. The two systems built into the unit are totally independent so there is no risk of contamination. Hybrid or Electric Vehicles New air conditioning systems fitted to hybrid and electric vehicles use electric air conditioning compressors. These electric compressors require the addition of special oils to be mixed with the refrigerant. All units have this functionality built in as standard and can manage the injection of both types of oil (POE and PAG). The selection can be made manually or automatically if the inbuilt database is available. Page 2 of 3

This is a more efficient alternative to the traditional detection method of injecting and ultraviolet tracer in to the system. This method has the advantage of being 100% ecologically sound, as the operation is done on an empty refrigerant circuit and so without any loss of refrigerant (a financial advantage as well). Furthermore, this avoids the use of a tracer, which generally contaminates the air conditioning system. The stations also print a test report at the end of the operation. Economical Connection Unions R-1234yf The connectors on all stations are specific to R-1234yf air conditioning systems. This prevents the connectors being connected to an R134a system by mistake. These connectors also meet the SAE J2888 standard and use a new technology, which limits the quantity of refrigerant that is lost when disconnecting. The use of this type of connector contributes towards the accuracy of the station and allows it to meet the requirements of the legislation that limits internal and collateral losses by the station to 80g per annum. Support and Warranty Commissioning and full aftersales service and support for all units is provided by Snap-On Business Services who will cover the management of the warranty, technical support and repair of the station in the event of an issue.
