2 Presentation: The particulate filter is a diesel engine exhaust gas post-processing device installed in the place of the silencer on PREMIUM 320 DCI refuse collector vehicles. This device contributes towards protection of the environment by reducing the emission of hydrocarbon and carbon oxides particles from vehicle exhaust gases. Operating principle: In the operating phase, the particulate filter is permanently managed by an ECU (electronic control unit) fastened to the chassis, which instantaneously determines the need to reduce the filter clogging rate to give optimum operation. The particulate filter clogging rate is reduced by increasing the internal temperature, which accelerates the combustion of the particles retained on the filter. 3 Instrument panel alert warning lights: Two specific dashboard warning lights indicate any system malfunction. Orange light: Red light: functional incident serious incident: stop immediately When starting the engine: BOTH WARNING LIGHTS COME ON FOR A FEW SECONDS when the ignition is switched on, then go out when the engine starts to indicate that the alert device is operative (WARNING LIGHTS operating normally - auto-test system). If the two WARNING LIGHTS do not come on, CONTACT YOUR DEALER. -Vehicle moving: IF ORANGE WARNING LIGHT FLASHES: MINOR INCIDENT CONTACT YOUR DEALER. IF ORANGE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON STEADY: MAJOR INCIDENT - CONTACT YOUR DEALER STRAIGHT AWAY. IF RED WARNING LIGHT ORANGE COMES ON STEADY: MAJOR INCIDENT - STOP THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY, AFTER MAKING IT SAFE (park in the nearest rest area) - CONTACT YOUR DEALER STRAIGHT AWAY. 4 Maintenance recommendations: WARNING: THESE RECOMMENDATIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WITHOUT FAIL. THEY MUST BE COMPLIED WITH FOR OPTIMUM OPERATION AND FOR APPLICATION OF THE WARRANTY COVER. Fuel grade: Use TBTS diesel fuel exclusively (very low sulphur content), with less than 50 ppm sulphur. If diesel fuel DISTRIBUTED BY SERVICE STATIONS is used (350 ppm sulphur), the filter will quickly become damaged. Furthermore, it is forbidden to use fuel additives (except the anti-freeze additive recommended by RENAULT TRUCKS). Oil consumption: The vehicle must have a fuel consumption of less than 1 litre of oil per 1000 km travelled or 500 l of diesel fuel consumed. A higher oil consumption rate may lead to premature filter clogging. If the red warning light inside the cab comes on, it is essential to bring the vehicle to a halt and stop the engine (risk of fire in the vehicle). Maintenance operations: The particulate filter must be inspected every year or every 100,000 km whichever term is reached first by taking a reading of the opacity of the gases leaving the particulate filter with an opacity meter. This reading must be taken in the dealership at the time of routine servicing or when the Particulate Filter Operating Instructions 29/06/04 A 4

5 vehicle undergoes testing by the competent authorities (in this case, the opacity reading must be sent to the dealer for analysis and diagnostic purposes). The particulate filter is a component that is subject to wear. It must be followed up by the dealer, who may be led to get it cleaned or replaced after running a diagnostic check. In the case of cleaning, a replacement particulate filter is to be fitted for the time taken to perform the cleaning operation. REMINDER: The driver is obliged to adhere to the following recommendations: EFFECT Red warning light on Orange light on Flashing or steady Increase in oil consumption Warning lamps failure detected by the auto test. Accident or impact to the particulate filter or the electronic box ACTION Make the vehicle safe (parked in the closest rest area). Stop the engine. Contact your dealer for diagnostics.
