2 What Does a Diesel Particulate Filter do? A diesel particle filter traps soot particles from the exhaust system to help reduce carbon emissions into the environment. It collects the soot in a honeycomb like filter.

6 How do you know when the filter is blocked? You may notice a loss in performance and also a warning light on your dash board. In some cases the vehicle may enter in to a cycle called limp mode to protect itself.
7 What causes the filter to become clogged with soot? There are a few reasons why a filter can become blocked. Low quality fuel or problems with fuel injectors ie Supermarkets These can both cause poor running and also increase the level for the soot in the exhaust system which can clog the filter more quickly. Driving Short Distances / Stop Start driving. If you are only driving short distances or are on a journey where you are stopping and starting frequently your diesel particulate filter will not be able to reach its optimum temperature to regenerate itself. Sticking ERG Valve Your exhaust gas recirculation valve (ERG) helps control the recirculation of your exhaust gas back into your engine, this helps lower fuel consumption and also helps your engine to run cooler. If the valve is stuck in either the open or closed position it will affect the mixture of fuel and air causing your vehicle to run rich or lean. A rich mixture will affect your DPF significantly and block it much faster than an engine that is running at its optimum efficiency.
8 What happens if the customer has a filter that is becoming blocked or is already blocked? They will normally do a forced regeneration on the filter with their diagnostic equipment, but this all depends on how blocked the diesel particulate filter is. A warning code or light would have probably appeared on the dash board, so the vehicle must be taken for inspection immediately this light means that the filter is becoming critically clogged, if the DPF fails it can cost over to have it replaced. The dealer will then clean the diesel particle filter with a Würth special chemical to soften the soot particles this is done by removing the DPF sensor and spraying directly into the filter with a cleaning chemical. This will then allow the vehicle to go through the regeneration process easier as the soot has become softer and does not require such a high temperature to burn off.
9 What is the difference between a FAP (Peugeot - Citroen) Filter and a DPF Filter? There are two types of particulate filter are in use - those with additives and those without. To enable a vehicle to use a system without additive the particulate filter must be fitted close to the engine, because the exhaust gases will not have travelled far from the engine they will still be hot enough to burn off the carbon soot particles. In these systems an oxidising catalytic converter will be integrated into the particulate filter. In other systems the particulate filter is fitted some distance from the engine and as the exhaust gases travel along the exhaust they cool. The temperatures required for ignition of the exhaust gas can only be achieved by the use of an additive these are the filters that are often know as FAP Filters, they are still DPF Filters they just have a different burn off process.
