2 2 SPN 5018/FMI 18 - GHG14 2 SPN 5018/FMI 18 - GHG14 This diagnostic is typically Regen Temperature Out of Range Low. 1. Connect DDDL Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). 3. Check for multiple codes. a. If other faults are active in addition to SPN 5018/FMI 18, troubleshoot the other faults first. b. If only SPN 5018/FMI 18 is present, Go to step 4. WARNING: PERSONAL INJURY To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, parking brake is set, and the wheels are blocked. WARNING: ENGINE EXHAUST To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area. Engine exhaust is toxic. 4. Start the engine. 5. Monitor the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) inlet temperature sensor, the DOC outlet temperature sensor, and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) outlet temperature sensor. Are the temperatures within 25 C (45 F) of each other? a. If Yes; Go to step 12. b. If No; Go to step Continue idling for 10 minutes, recheck the temperatures, and turn the ignition OFF. Are the temperatures now within 25 C (45 F) of each other? a. If Yes; Go to step 12. b. If No; Go to step Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). 8. Access the SCR and DPF Voltages service routine. 9. Select "start acquiring." 10. Monitor the DOC outlet temperature voltage (T_DOC_OUT). Continue monitoring and wiggle the wire harness from the Aftertreatment Device (ATD) to the Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM). Is there a large deviation in the voltage? a. If Yes; Go to step 11. b. If No; Go to step Inspect the electrical connections upstream of the ACM: DOC outlet temperature sensor, ATD harness 10-pin connector, VIH 37-pin connector, and ACM 120-pin connector, for corrosion and spread pins. a. If corrosion or damaged or bent pins are found, repair as necessary. Verify repairs. b. If no corrosion or damage is found, replace the DOC outlet temperature sensor. Refer to section "Removal of the GHG14 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Outlet Temperature Sensor" 12. Monitor the DPF inlet pressure sensor (P_DPF_IN) voltage. 13. Is the voltage between volt? a. If Yes; Go to step 15. b. If No; Go to step Inspect the DOC inlet pressure sensor electrical connector for corrosion and spread pins. a. If corrosion, damaged or bent pins are found, repair as necessary. Verify repairs. b. If no corrosion or damage is found, replace the DOC inlet pressure sensor. Refer to section "Removal of the GHG14 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Inlet Pressure Sensor Tube" 15. Monitor the DPF outlet pressure sensor (P_DPF_OUT) voltage. 16. 3 a. If Yes; Go to step 18. b. If No; Go to step Inspect the DPF outlet pressure sensor electrical connector for corrosion and spread pins. a. If corrosion or damaged or bent pins are found, repair as necessary. Verify repairs. b. If no corrosion or damage is found, replace the DPF outlet pressure sensor. Refer to section "Removal of the GHG14 Diesel Particulate Filter Outlet Pressure Sensor" 18. Remove the ATD. Refer to section "Removal of the GHG14 1-BOX From the Vehicle" 19. Inspect the face of the removed DPF substrate for contamination. a. If coolant contamination is found (white residue on inlet and sweet smell from exhaust), Go to step 20. b. If oil contamination is found (oil residue on inlet), Go to step 23. c. If no coolant or oil contamination is present, Go to step Question the operator about coolant usage. 21. Visually the inspect coolant reservoir for low level. Possible causes for coolant contamination in an aftertreatment system are: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler Failed or defective cylinder head gasket, improper head bolt torque, low liner height Failed air compressor cylinder head Failed fuel cooler Fuel doser cracked body, missing or failed seals 22. Repair the cause of coolant entry as necessary. Go to step Question the operator about excessive oil consumption. Possible causes of excessive oil consumption are: Excessive idle time Defective turbine wheel seal Turbocharger bearing failure Worn exhaust valve seals Defective crankcase breather system Stuck rings 24. Repair the cause of oil contamination and Go to step Replace the DOC. Go to step Inspect the face of the removed ATD outlet flange for contamination. a. 4 2 SPN 5018/FMI 18 - GHG14 NOTE: With fuel washout, there should be a wash of fuel to the outlet and then a fuel trail to the drain hole. The drain hole is opposite the temperature sensor. b. If there are signs of fuel washout, Go to step 37. c. If no soot buildup or fuel washout is found, Go to step Inspect for the cause of soot loading. Possible causes are: Plugged air filter Stuck intake throttle valve Air induction system, Charge Air Cooler (CAC), and EGR leaks Exhaust manifold (including bellows) leaks Turbocharger (including gasket) gasket leaks Turbocharger compressor and turbine vane damage and oil fouling Incorrect valve lash and fuel injector timing 28. If the cause of soot loading is found, repair the cause, and Go to step 30. If no cause is found, Go to step Pressurize the intake manifold and CAC and leak test with soapy water. 5 Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). Using DDDL 7.X, compare barometric pressure to intake manifold pressure. If the readings are not within 4.1 kpa (0.6 psi) of each other, repair the broken pressure sensor or its connection, and Go to step Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). Using DDDL 7.X, compare the intake manifold temperature to EGR temperature. If the readings are not within 6 C (10 F) of each other, repair the broken temperature sensor or its connection, and Go to step 39. NOTE: The ATD will leak at the water drain hole in the outlet flange. 32. Pressurize the entire exhaust system and leak test with soapy water. If any leaks are found, repair the cause of the leaks and Go to step Run a turbocharger hysteresis test. If it fails the test, repair or replace the turbocharger Go to step 39. For the DD13: Refer to section "Removal of the DD13 Turbocharger" For the DD15 and DD16: Refer to section "Removal of the DD15 and the DD16 Turbocharger" 34. Using DDDL 7.X, verify the fuel injector codes. If incorrect fuel injector codes are programmed, reprogram the codes and Go to step 39. With the engine running at 1800 rpm, check the fuel pressure at the temperature sensor port on the fuel pump. If the fuel pressure is not between kpa (70 80 psi), repair the fuel system, and Go to step Check the fuel doser injector valve for leaks and perform a fuel doser purge routine to verify valve integrity. If leaks or integrity concerns are found, replace the fuel doser injector valve. Go to step Check for a source of fuel washout. Possible clues to fuel washout are: Improperly functioning fuel injectors Performance issues Hard starting complaints 38. Repair the cause of the fuel washout, and Go to step Replace the DPF. 40. The vehicle must be parked outside. 42. Access the DPF regeneration service routine. NOTE: Regeneration safety entry conditions must be met before a regeneration can begin.
