8 Reducing Particulate Matter is the Law EPA has very specific diesel emissions regulations in place. EPA mandates that all diesel vehicles manufactured after 2007 be equipped with a diesel particulate filter

13 How DPFs work Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are designed to clean the exhaust emitted by diesel engines.

14 How DPFs work In the diesel DPF, exhaust gasses pass through the open end of a channel and at the opposite end which is plugged that forces the gases through the porous channel wall, allowing the exhaust to escape through the neighboring channel wall trapping as much as 90 percent of the solid particle matter. 17 What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)? Solution of urea and de ionized water that, when injected into the exhaust stream (a process known as Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR), eliminates 90% of NOX exhaust pollutants by converting them to nitrogen and water

18 What happens if a vehicle runs out of diesel exhaust fluid? Vehicles that are equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems have a control unit that detects the DEF level. As the DEF level drops, warning lights are displayed on the vehicle s control panel. If the DEF tank becomes empty, the vehicle s horsepower will automatically be reduced. If the tank is not refilled soon after that point, the vehicle will be placed in limp mode.

19 How much DEF will each vehicle consume? DEF consumption is measured as a ratio of diesel fuel consumption. In general, DEF consumption will be between 2 and 3%. This means a 50 to 1 ratio with diesel. (For every 50 gallons of diesel fuel burned, you will use 1 gallon of DEF)

21 Why DPF Maintenance is Necessary Many manufacturers state that all that is needed to keep DPFs clean is to hit the vehicle s regeneration button. (Forced Regeneration) It s true that the regen cycle is necessary and will combust much of the accumulated particulate matter. Increased regeneration down time
