Fuel Efficient Vehicles & Low Sulphur Diesel MVDA
The need for more Fuel efficient vehicles Greenhouse Effect Present day price of oil Rapid decreasing oil reserves
Oil Reserves It took nature 200 million years to develop all the oil below the surface Humans just took 200 years to consume half of it At current rate it will take 40 years to exhaust the existing stock
Our aim To slow down the consumption of oil without compromising our development. We can now start this process by adapting to new technologies available.
New Diesel Engine Technologies Stop and Start Improved Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Control Systems. New Engine Designs that makes them smoother Lower Sulphur Content Redesigned gearbox.
Other Improvements New Designs for the body Reduction of weight through the use of lighter materials, for example, aluminium for the body, chassis and suspension. Extensive use of recyled plastics. 85% of fuel used is to propel the vehicle and 15 % for the passengers travelling in it.
Vehicles Under Using Alternate Fuels Solar Powered Vehicles. Being Developed Flex Fuel Vehicles. In use in Brazil since the 70 s Hybrid Electric. On the Road in Increasing Numbers Locally Electric. Becoming more Popular and Recently introduced Here Hydrogen powered Vehicles. At present being tested in London Buses. Still some 10 years away for PASSENGER CARS
Benefits of New Common Rail Diesel Engines Improved Acceleration Better Torque Quieter Smoother Noise Vibration and Harshness reduced Increased Efficiency
Low Sulphur Diesel Low Sulphur diesel is cleaner burning and produces less particulate emission in both OLDER and NEW engines. Only Fuel available to give better consumption and lower CO2 Emission for time being.
Fuel Consumption And CO2 Emission The lower the consumption the lower the CO2 emission. Lower Consumption also means lower fuel budget. We must be sensitized to the notion of a lower carbon footprint.
Diesel Powered Cars About 20% more Fuel Efficient than those powered by Gasoline High Compression Engine more Robust Longer Life if well maintained They are more economical to run
World Trend Passenger cars and Light Vehicles Europe 30 to 70% of Fleet are Diesels Japan 0.2%-New Stringent Emission Legislation as from this year are forcing manufacturers to offer Diesel derivatives for the home market USA-The Transport Secretary has announced New Emission Standards by Year Average consumption of fleet must be 54.4 MPG(5.2L/Km). This can only be achieved by Advanced Improvement in the Internal Combustion Engines, mainly Diesels.
The Way Forward-Mauritius Since July 2011 the Excise Act has been amended and provides for a levy or rebate depending on the CO2 Emission. A significant shift towards smaller engine capacity has been noted since then and the trend is growing. This means that the mix of engine capacity is changing in the right direction.
Introduction of Low Sulphur Diesel The introduction of 50 ppm Sulphur content paves the way for the import of more Fuel Efficient passenger vehicles in Mauritius. Manufacturers have been informed of changes and soon vehicles of EURO 3 Specification will start appearing on our roads. The process has already begun!
Examples of Fuel Efficient Diesel Vehicles Renault Twingo 1.5dci 4.0L/100Km VW Golf 1.6TDI Blue Motion 4.1L/100Km Ford Fiesta 1.6 DCI 3.7L/100Km Toyota Prius 1.8 Hybrid 3.7L/100Km Ford Focus Hp Duratorque Diesel 3.4L/100Km BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics 4.1L/100km
Consumer Awareness Consumers need to be aware of the need of these vehicles and of their availability. A compulsory labelling system must be introduced to indicate the fuel consumption and CO2 emission of every vehicle offered for sale be it new or used. The CO2 rebate or levy should also be indicated.

Final Word- Our Priority Fuel efficiency and CO2 emission should now be one of the main factors that influence our decision when buying a motor vehicle. A price cannot be put on cleaner emission and our country s energy security. It makes sense that we must choose the cleanest and most efficient vehicle available and one that meets our needs.
