2 Apologies & Thanks Apologies for this last minute intrusion. Thanks to Innovation Norway team for accommodating me at short notice.

3 Why today Without doubt Norway leads the world in gas powering! Six months ago, I got involved in a project for LNG powering of a floating craft - a totally new learning experience. Somewhat more knowledgeable now, I would like to share my experiences and concerns. These concerns may become yours as well. Hopefully this interaction will be mutually beneficial.

4 Myths & Misconceptions Technology cost is high Implementation cost is prohibitive LNG is unsafe LNG is not readily available ß Very few gas engines All myths. All can be dismissed.

5 Very few gas engines? Six months back I heard - only the names Wartsila and Rolls Royce, and only 1000kw+ range. Today Many more. Including Scania from Norway. Scania themseves do not supply stand alone engines. But their authorised dealer offers fully classed gensets with Scania gas powered engines - and in lower power range. DNV-GL can enlighten us more on availability

8 Live Project: CONCERNS - Gas Engines Pure gas preferable Pure gas engines not available in 1000KW+ range Few available in lower 300KW+ range but mostly for genset application Many new entrants expected shortly Conversion of diesel engines to gas powering possible but warranty/class issues GREY AREAS Classification issues in conversion from diesel to gas Problem of response time when load is fluctuating Issues with gas powering where both speed and load are variable. Is that why gas powered engine driven gensets are more readily available?

9 Live Project: CONCERNS - Containment Adequate technology available For small/medium size vessels 'C' class tanks are the obvious choice 'A' &'B' Class tanks are more relevant to LNG Carriers and therefore not being pursued. Membrane tanks are rather expensive and expertise in India is scarce GREY AREAS If 'C' class tank is portable, what would be class implication

10 Live Project: CONCERNS - Re-gasification Adequate technology available Technology cost is quite reasonable GREY AREAS What are class implications - perhaps DNV-GL can explain this

11 Live Project: CONCERNS - LNG Availability & Bunkering No issue in existing and upcoming LNG storage terminals If bunkering location is close to a LNG storage terminal, piped supply is preferable Satellite terminals are very much possible. Several hinterland terminals already exist. Replenishment via road tankers is being guaranteed by some satellite terminal providers For quicker turnaround floating bunkering station (non-propelled or otherwise) should be considered GREY AREAS Economical size of satellite LNG terminal for a given demand Economical size in case of piped gas

12 Live Project: CONCERNS - High CAPEX In my project, CAPEX higher by about 25%, about 6 crores. The current cost of diesel per year is 7 crores. LNG cost would be about 3.5 crores. CAPEX recovery in less than two years. GREY AREAS Maintenance cost - how does gas powered engine compare with diesel powered engines

13 Live Project: Gas-Electric Solution - Proposed Architecture Will change this and make it more readable

14 Live Project: Gas-Electric Solution - Why? 1. Load variation is significant in a CSD. Electric drive with good PMS, whether diesel-electric or gas-electric, will always give better SFOC and significantly lower fuel consumption as 3 gensets will run during 48% of dredging hours in a day 2 gensets will run during 48% of dredging hours in a day 1 gensets will run during 4% of dredging hours in a day 2. There is a wider choice of gas powered gensets, particularly in the lower power range. 3. The response of gas engines is poor when RPM and load varies. Gas engines work better at constant RPM. In case of gensets RPM will be constant.

15 CONCLUSIONS Bunkering is the only issue Many bunkering options are available and many more soon Several LNG terminals are in operation, many more being commissioned and lots in the pipeline So, if bunkering is not an issue, Gas powering is highly do-able today, It will be more so in the near future, It will lead to huge OPEX saving, and Last but not the least - gas is green.
