2 EDITORIAL Tis the season Planning season, that is. As we wrap up 2010 and look back at a difficult year that was, I think we can all be grateful the markets turned out to be a little more favorable than anticipated. The commercial construction markets declined throughout the year, as did the residential market, which started out promising but tapered off after the tax incentive expired. However, we did see a major comeback in the industrial control and components business. With capital expenditures on the rise, industrial spending increased, fanned by a favorable tailwind from government spending. Backlogs have begun to build again. Prospects for 2011 So how will 2011 look? While economists crystal balls haven t been crystal clear, here s a glimpse of what we re expecting. We think residential markets will continue to see slow but positive growth, possibly in the five- to seven-percent range. The control and breaker markets will grow, but not nearly as much as in We expect growth in the high single digits. The construction markets will end their skid and growth will occur but not likely more than five percent over Government and data center spending will continue to drive growth in major project construction, but again we believe a conservative forecast of five to seven percent growth seems likely. Time to plan With this information in hand, now s the time to sit down with your local Eaton sales management team and begin planning to grow the market. As Jeff McGill states on page 12, our Mutual Marketing Plan is a tool we can use to help determine where we are going to focus and to outperform the market and our competitors. We look forward to working with you to put together aggressive but realistic plans to be executed throughout the year. Plant of the Year On a separate note, I would like to recognize and congratulate our Lincoln, Ill. residential product manufacturing plant. This facility won the Assembly Plant of the Year award from Assembly magazine. While many of our competitors have chosen to move their loadcenter manufacturing plants out of the country, we have continued to invest in a world-class facility here in the U.S. If you haven t been to the plant recently, I highly encourage you to grab a customer and visit the plant. You and your customer will both be impressed, and you ll be glad you made the trip. A technical paper, a new catalog, time-current curves, dimension sheets, and other data are now available at This information is part of Eaton s program to raise awareness of the dangers posed by improperly reconditioned or refurbished mining breakers. Such improper modifications can lead to application failure, unsafe conditions, unreliable operation, and personal injury. In recent testing, Eaton found that some breakers refurbished by unauthorized third parties were unable to provide dependable circuit protection. Our breakers are best serviced by Eaton or authorized dealers and distributors, because they are designed, engineered and manufactured by Eaton and incorporate proprietary technology. Says product manager Patricia Matwijec, In our testing of some unauthorized third-party reconditioned circuit breakers, we found the models tested to be substandard, unsafe and unreliable. A breaker failure means the loss of production, possible equipment damage and the increased risk of worker injury at the time of failure or during maintenance. Customers can best protect themselves against dangerous and defective counterfeit electrical products by using established vendors and authorized retailers, exercising caution in online transactions, checking for certification marks, scrutinizing labels and packaging, avoiding products that lack identifying branding labels or affiliation, seeking information online about product recalls, and avoiding bargains that seem too good to be true. 5 SOLUTIONS Lincoln, Ill. facility named Plant of the Year Eaton s plant in Lincoln, Ill. has been named 2010 Assembly Plant of the Year by Assembly magazine and the Boston Consulting Group. The award has honored production facilities in the U.S. annually since The goal of the award is to identify state-of-the-art facilities that have applied world-class processes to reduce production cost, increase productivity, shorten time to market, and improve product quality. More than 430 employees work at the 380,000-square-foot plant that assembles five million electrical devices annually for residential markets. The facility has operated in Lincoln since States the magazine: Employees pride themselves in building the best loadcenters, metering devices, power outlet panels, air conditioner disconnects, and generator transfer switches in the industry. The Lincoln plant was chosen because it has remained innovative and cost efficient despite the challenging housing market. Specifically, the plant: Has achieved more than $15 million in savings over the past three years, much of it due to lean manufacturing initiatives and investments in new production technology. Is engaged in high-mix, high-volume production. The plant has multiple assembly lines that produce a wide variety of different models. Its in-house flex center designs many custom products. Has reduced the cycle time in its four product family streams by more than 40 percent. Assembly magazine has named Eaton s Lincoln, Ill. facility 2010 Assembly Plant of the Year. Has taken aggressive steps to reduce product warranty costs through assembly-line innovations and quality assurance. This indicates to the returns group that a distributor has contacted the TRC, and the TRC has determined that the Power Xpert product in question is not operating as designed and therefore should be returned for warranty repair, replacement or credit. 7 SOLUTIONS We want documentation to be a differentiator for Eaton A new EatonCare technical services team is lightening the paper workload of distributors as well as Eaton project managers and project engineers. Says Bill Osborne, technical services manager and team leader: Documentation specifications can be just as important as product specifications. Our time studies showed that we were spending too high a percentage of our time on documentation. By reviewing and communicating documentation requirements upfront, the team has managed to reduce the hours spent while at the same time delivering quality improvements, leading to a better product. Bill Mortensen, director of project management, expects the team s performance to make a significant effect on customers. Ultimately, we want documentation to be a differentiator for Eaton, he says. To begin the documentation process, the need for submittals and operation and maintenance manuals (O&Ms) must be identified at order entry. Through September, team members completed 646 submittals and 567 O&Ms. Distributors will be receiving documents from the team through their existing channels of project engineers and project managers. For more information or to provide feedback, contact BillPOsborne@eaton.com. n SUPPORT Motors & Controls/Eaton team wins cement company orders A team composed of Motors & Controls Corporation and Eaton Corporation personnel recently won an order from Ash Grove Cement Company, Seattle, for Eaton power-quality equipment for a major upgrade of the customer s incoming electrical services. This was quickly followed by the sale of a motor control center from a customer whose last three MCCs were supplied by a competitor. Says Eaton s Dan McManus, Rod Sannes of Motors & Controls was instrumental in opening the door for these opportunities. Our product marketing, sales office and engineering services people worked closely with this distributor from the beginning. Phase one, a major upgrade of incoming electrical services, involved our Power Xpert 600 meters and software, as well as replacement of old analog relays with 16 FP-4000 protective relays. Plans are in place for installation of 25 Power Xpert 2000 meters. Just a month after phase one was complete, Hurchel Young at Ash Grove called us about an MCC project. We worked up a proposal for a double-back unit due to space restraints and offered a Power Xpert 2000 meter to allow the customer to gather information from this MCC into the new power-quality system. In summary, I think Ash Grove could see that Motors & Controls and Eaton were dedicated to growing a close relationship with it. 8 SOLUTIONS Eaton meets IDEA s certification requirements Eaton s Electrical Sector has been advised by the Industry Data Exchange Association (IDEA) that it has met all the requirements of the IDEA data-quality certification program. The purpose of the program is to improve data quality based on industry standards, update data in a timely manner and reduce errors in the Industry Data Warehouse (IDW). Says ecommerce manager Jennifer Winkelvoss, Data integrity and quality, from calculation of price group codes to presentation of product information, are top priorities for Eaton. This certification recognition provides our distributors a higher confidence in our product, packaging and pricing data. Distributors will receive accurate, timely information that allows them to publish their catalogs faster. Because Eaton is controlling the quality of the data, distributors are relieved of editing responsibility. The letter from IDEA to Eaton began: Congratulations on setting such a great example for the electrical industry! It explained: Accurate, current, high-quality data in IDW is necessary to ensure that the industry achieves maximum data synchronization between trading partners. When quality data is synchronized, the order-management and purchase-to-payment cycle costs are reduced. The data quality certification program is intended to facilitate that objective. 9 SUPPORT New webinar examines UL 508A standards SUPPORT Jo-Kell s open house is food drive A long-time Eaton distributor, Jo-Kell Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., held its open house and customer appreciation day on October 20 with the theme: Help Others. As a contributor to the Jacksonville, Fla. food bank, this platinum distributor used the event to promote the need for nonperishable food. More than 100 people attended, and all brought a contribution. A barbecue lunch was enjoyed by attendees, and those who visited the Eaton booth saw generators, IQ 150 meter displays, Motor Insight, and the ELC programmable logic controller. n UL 508A is the Underwriters Laboratories safety standard for construction of industrial control panels. The document gives guidelines to panel builders on various issues including proper component selection, wiring methods and calculation of short circuit current ratings. Eaton has developed a new UL 508A Control Panel Design Guide, a tool that helps explain the code and that brings together the common information needed to build the different elements of a control panel, all in a single source. In addition to this guide, a new educational webinar examines the implications of UL 508A standards for panel builders. IDEA EXCHANGE Empower all employees The phrase, You ll have to talk to the manager, emasculates the employee who has to say it and infuriates the customer who has to hear it. In the language of the consumer, this is known as the runaround. The needs and demands of customers vary daily and employees must be empowered to handle any situation. When you empower employees, it transfers confidence to them and gives the customer an impression of competence. If a decision needs to be made, make it. Do whatever you think I would do. Remember, Richard is selling diamonds. If he can trust his employees to make decisions that carry that kind of price, shouldn t you be able to trust frontline employees to use discernment when helping customers? 10 SUPPORT Three enthusiastic contractors discuss the ECCN program Taking aim at the more than 50 million U.S. homes built before 1985, Eaton s Electrical Sector introduced the Eaton Certified Contractor Network (ECCN) program in Today, the number of certified contractors exceeds 800, including 50 in Canada. ECCN gives residential electrical service and renovation contractors the only comprehensive business-building program in the industry. The program offers its members advanced technical training, continuous education and marketing tools through exclusive access to certification courses. (Program details are available at eatoncertified.com.) In May 2010, ECCN program manager Jake Hjemvick moderated a meeting of the program s new advisory board, which consists of eight member contractors. Following are thoughts offered by three of them: Gives you a competitive advantage Brad Krause heads a contractor firm called The Electric Professor, located just outside Grand Rapids, Mich. In 2008, he broke a relationship with his electrical supplier of 25 years and joined the ECCN. Today, he and his service technicians are ECCN certified, and he has become a member of the advisory board. Eaton has come up with a great idea to form the advisory board, says Brad. Sure, we re all electricians, but we re businessmen as well. From a networking standpoint, I m able to sit down with the top electrical contractors in the country and hear what they have to say. That s invaluable to me. Some people pay $50,000 to get that kind of help. Brad has an idea for ambitious service contractors: If they want to take the next step and get some help doing it, I d definitely recommend joining the program. ECCN is contractor focused and Eaton gives you a competitive advantage in the market. If you pick up one good idea from the program, it s well worth it. It will change the industry As long as electricians buy into this program, it will change the industry, says Gus Antos, a member of the ECCN advisory board and president of Milestone Electric, the largest residential electrical service contractor in the Dallas area. All four of his service managers have completed ECCN certification. One of three contractors described in this article: Brad Krause, The Electric Professor, Grand Rapids, Mich. Gus adds, It seems like every other trade, especially plumbing and HVAC, already had some sort of program in place. When it came to repairs and renovations, electricians since the 70s were pretty much behind the eight ball. That s why it was great to see Eaton step up. The only thing standing in the way of electricians is education. Also, the education process is a two-way street involving homeowners. We need to educate the public as to our capabilities. We at Milestone Electric run a number of TV and radio commercials that highlight our capabilities. Take your good ideas to Eaton Early this year, Steve Hansen and his brother-in-law formed a Folsom, California company called Countryside Solar, which specializes in residential solar applications. Four years before, he managed an electrical service company and worked with Michael Jones, his Eaton sales engineer, to develop an important new product. Says Steve, I had an idea for a retrofit panel that would make life easier for California contractors installing new residential panelboards. All the suppliers manufactured panels for new construction but nothing for retrofit applications. I mentioned my idea to Michael, and before I knew it I was on a plane to Chicago. We drove to the Lincoln Flex Center, where I worked with Steven Schell s team to design the panel. Within three months, my design was manufactured, boxed and shipped to my door! If you have a good idea, take it to Eaton. They will work with you to develop a realistic design, and you ll have a product that separates you from the competition. My Eaton sales engineer comes to my door to talk about new ideas. I can t imagine that happening with any competitor. As for the solar company, Steve believes that alternative energy will become a bonanza for ECCN members. In California, he is anxious to sell Eaton electric car chargers packaged into a residential solar system.
