Hi Everyone, At our last meeting Steve told us that the dump site at AutoMall Parkway looks to be on the final stages of what they call Capping. Which is the process of dumping tons and tons of clay on top of the tons of dirt that has already been dumped at the site. This is the last stage in getting the dump site closed for good. We have yet to confirm the closure as of yet, and will be working on getting conformation as soon as we can. I will send out a special if any new news comes up in between articles. At this time the dump site is our only viable future site location. Our Yearly club Auction is coming up quickly! This year we will once again be at the Holy Spirit Church in Fremont. The date will be Saturday October 26th. We will be needing lots of help with the setup, Auction, and eventual pizza and beer afterwards! Jack Peterson went to the local school in Milpitas which has a large gym and bleachers, which is what we need to put on the auction. The Holy Spirit church rental fee will climb next year to $1500! Which means we have to sell $15,000 worth of items to break even! That is a tall task! Jack found the price of the gym in Milpitas is around $80 an hour! This will be discussed at our next meeting and I foresee a change in locations for next year! Keep you posted on that as well. Hope your all doing well and having fun in whatever you chose to do! 2 Bayside R/C Club Meeting Minutes August 8th, 2013 Meeting called to order by Pete at 7:30 President Pete Kontorinis present Vice President Dan Sievert present Secretary Mike West present Treasurer Will Sievert present Attendance 12 once Phil showed up Guests - none President This month Pete is wondering if we will have enough help for the auction. Followed by some discussion on the increasing cost for the facility we are using and that we should look for a new place. Will found a place in San Leandro but it may be too small. Jack is going to look at two places in Milpitas and get back to us. Jack will be at the Reno Air Races next month so needs someone to bring the raffle stuff to the meeting for him. 7:45 Phil arrived AMA would not recharter Bayside if the President was not a member. So Pete renewed his membership in AMA Pete also talked about the training that went on over at the EBRC field in conjunction with LFE members. Pete said he contacted Frank Goto via Facebook and found Frank is getting a helicopter together. VP - Dan - has nothing to report tonight. Treasurer - Will - gave his usual treasury report. Says he still gets lots of mail from companies that think Bayside is some kind of business. They try to sell him all kinds of products and services. Secretary - Mike - no club business to report on. And while we were on the topic Pete got approval of the minutes. Website - Micah is leaving town and hopefully can continue with updates to the website. New Field Committee - Dave not at the meeting tonight. Steve says the dump is capped and we need to get going on a new field there. Past Events No past events to report on. Upcoming Events - Some of our members fly at SACRC which has some night flying the last Friday of the month. This can be either on or off depending on weather. They are trying to get the word out to increase participation. Also the caretaker s house is currently not occupied but for one guy that comes and 2 goes occasionally. In October they are having a WWI and Golden Age fly in. And the Bayside Auction will be October 26th. We need people to commit to helping. No Old business - No New Business - Break - 8:10-8:25 Show and Tell Mike showed his small foam version of the Burnelli UB-14 which he recently completed and flew. This is a test plane for a future larger model of approx. 140 span. Phil demonstrated his quad rotor to which he added a paper cutout of a Tesla Model S. He flew it around the room. And then we had the Raffle. Dan brought a rabbit s foot of course. The Hangar 9 Sundowner.36 was just what Dan Sievert needed to add to his collection. 3 How to Prevent Sparking by Scott Paschen When connecting a LiPo pack to the controller, strong sparking commonly occurs. Fast charging of the controller filter capacitors causes this. The higher the voltage equals the higher the cell count, and the lower the internal resistance means the better the quality of the pack. The better the capacitors in the controller and the higher the capacity of the capacitors, the bigger the spark. In addition to the small shock (because of the sparking), the charging current of the capacitors may be, in extreme cases, so great that damage or destruction of the capacitors occurs. A simple procedure can eliminate sparking when connecting the battery pack, thus protecting the filter capacitors. How to connect the positive leg or wire is shown in Photo 1. Photo 1. Connectors, as well as the resistor, are insulated by heat-shrink tubing and shown in Photo 2. Photo 2. How to connect the battery: 1. Connect the leg of the battery to the on the controller. 2. In the positive circuit, first connect the + leg of the controller to the auxiliary connector (to which a resistor with tens of ohms is connected in serial). This will limit the charging current when connecting the wires and will charge the filter capacitors without sparking. 3. Now connect the power wires (sparking will not occur). You may start the motor now. There are no special requirements on the auxiliary connector. The current is small (1 to 2 amps) and lasts for a short time. There are also no requirements on the resistor. Any type is sufficient such as metallized 0.6 W, size 0207, value between 20 to 50 Ohm depending on the voltage of the battery pack. Also, those for 4-6 LiPos use 20 Ohm, for 10 LiPos 33 Ohm, those for LiPos that use 51 Ohm will work. However, it is not necessary to use these exact values because of wide variation. Connect the positive leg Connect the new auxiliary connector first. Capacitors are charged with small current. Sparking will not occur. (Photo 3.) Photo 3. Now connect the power connectors (sparking will not occur). The main current to the controller and the motor during operation passes through these power connectors and conductors. (Photo 4.)
