BalticConnector General overview Jaanuar 2019
Elering at glance 5500 km HV electricity lines; HVDC connections EstLink 1 and EstLink km HP gas pipelines Emergency reserve power plants and 150 substations Eurobond listed on London Stock Exchange, Moody s A2/stable 220 employees Asset value ca MEUR 900
Mission Elering s mission is to ensure security of energy supply to Estonian consumers through effective regional energy markets based on reliable energy networks and competent employees. In doing so, we support competitiveness of Estonian economy.
Transmission Networks Electricity transmission network consists of over 5500 km lines and near 150 substations. Natural gas transmission network consists of ca 900 km gas pipelines and 39 gas metering and distribution stations. 4
Overview of BalticConnector project
What is BalticConnector? Balticconnector connects the gas transmission networks of Estonia and Finland and is a precondition for an efficient regional gas market and the diversification of sources of supply (LNG terminals, biomethane, etc.) in the Baltic- Finnish region. The project is developed in cooperation by Elering AS and Baltic Connector OY. For the implementation of the Balticconnector grid enhancements are also needed in Estonia, such as a compressor station in south of Estonia and bi-directional gas metering station on the Estonian-Latvian border (Estonia-Latvia gas interconnection enhancement). 10 MCM/d 7 MCM/d
General BalticConnector cluster consists two major projects: Interconnector between Estonia and Finland (land section in Estonia, submarine section on the seabed of the Gulf of Finland and land section in Finland. Enhancement of Estonia-Latvia interconnection The length of the submarine section of Balticconnector from Kersalu near Paldiski to Inkoo in Finland is 77 km. The gas pipeline facilitates bidirectional gas flows. The capacity of the pipeline with 500 mm nominal diameter and up to 80 bar pressure is 7.2 million cubic metres of gas per day and 0.3 million cubic metres gas per hour. The length of the land-based section of Balticconnector is 55 km from Kiili to Paldiski in Estonia and 22 km from Inkoo to Siuntio in Finland. In order to guarantee bidirectional gas flows, compressor and metering stations must also be built in Estonia (2) and Finland (1).
Socioeconomic benefits of Balticconnector The completion of the project will: improve the security of supply of natural gas in both Estonia and Finland enhance the gas market covering Finland and the Baltic countries in forming alternative supply channels that will increase competition in the gas market improve opportunities for using renewable energy (biomethane) improve the security of supply in the Baltic-Finnish region by giving equal opportunities for natural gas to compete with other primary fuels improve the integration of the common gas market of the Finnish and Baltic countries with the EU single market when the Lithuanian-Polish gas interconnection GIPL will be completed will bring Finland together with the gas transmission network of the other EU countries by giving Finland access to the underground gas depot in Latvia.
2020 3B-FI common gas infra&market New infrastructure is developed to connect region and end energy isolation BalticConnector project is one of key elements towards regional gas market End result by 2020 Regional gas market, which is competitive, liquid and has high security of supply Balticconnector Klaipeda LNG terminal Paldiski LNG terminal Riga Kiemenai Vilnius Helsinki Tallinn Karksi Puiatu compressor station Incukalns UGS Gas Interconnection Poland- Lithuania Warsaw

Financing of Balticconnector project by EU Balticconnector project is one of the projects supported under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), an EU funding programme for infrastructure with 206 meur (initial planned total cost of the project 298 meur) Interconnector between Estonia and Finland meur (75% of the total cost of 250 meur + studies 10,8 meur) Enhancement of Estonia-Latvia interconnection 18.6 meur (50% of the total cost of 37.2 meur) Addionally, before investment decision Balticconnector studies were supported by EU with 5,4 meur (50% of 10,8 meur) The grant was awarded to end the historical dependence of Finland from a single gas supplier. Balticconnector will enhance the security of supply in the Eastern Baltic Sea region; it will provide for the diversification of sources and routes and will enable competition on the regional gas market.
