6 Big outages March 1999: The collapse hit the electrical grid in south Brazil, from 75 to 97 mil. people were affected by outage for 5 hours. At that time, it was the largest recorded outage. August 2003: 55 millionpeople were affected by outage for two days on the northeast coast of USA and Canada. Outages repeated few times in smaller extent. USA invested a lot of money to the transmission line since that time. September 2003: 56 million people were affected by blackout in Italy for 18 hours. A part of Switzerland was affected by this blackout for few hours as well. July 2004: A month before beginning of the summer Olympic games in Athens blackout affected 7 million people in Greece. Besides other things, network congestion due to use of air conditioning is given as a reason. August 2005: Around 100 million people felt massive blackout on the Indonesian islands Java and Bali. It lasted several hours. September 2011: Extensive outage hit California. Almost 7 million people were without electrical energy for 12 hours. Speculations that it is related to 10 year anniversary of terrorist attacks from 11th of September 2011 were not confirmed. July 2012: The blackout hit 670 million people in India. That is 9 % of the entire population of the planet - more than there are in entire European Union. This blackout is considered as the largest mass outage in history. For the second most populous country in the world it was probably not the last one, local outdated infrastructure does not handle requirements of a rapidly growing Indian economy. February 2014: Unusually cold weather with heavy fall of snow destroyed thousand kilometres of electrical networks in Slovenia. It caused several days outage that affected more than households. 6
