TRANSMISSION
Protecting & Utilizing Critical Assets Challenge Power systems are interconnected, highly complex networks that are susceptible to instabilities. Transformers, the heart of the aging power system, currently average an in-service life of over 40 years. Expertise to manage the grid is rapidly diminishing due to the retirement of skilled, technical workers. Additionally, Utilities are being asked to increase grid efficiency & resiliency without investing in new capital equipment, while also supporting the integration of renewables. Overall, Utilities are under intense scrutiny by both regulatory agencies and the public, to prevent the catastrophic power system failures that have occurred over the last decades. Solution GE offers utilities advanced solutions to improve grid stability, support the latest cybersecurity tools, and increase the efficiency of transmission networks, including reactive power solutions that cost effectively increase power transfer capabilities of existing infrastructure and self healing systems that detect instabilities and automatically reconfigure and restore networks in real time.
Grid Challenge Increasing Demands on Transmission 750 GW of worldwide coal-fired capacity retiring by 2030 Utilities need to maximize efficiency & stability of the grid to compensate 25% of New Generation globally will come from renewables by 2018 $1.6T+ invested globally in 2013 to provide consumers with energy 27 GW of U.S. coal fired to retire over next 5 years 72 GW is enough to reliably power 44.7 million homes View Sources EXPLORE & INTERACT

DISTRIBUTION
Improved Reliability & Efficiency Challenge More than 10% of power is lost from the distribution system due to inefficiencies, reducing system reliability and costing utilities millions in lost revenue. Additionally, utilities need to manage the complexities of new renewable energy usage, the regulatory requirements to reduce SAIDI /CAIDI, and the challenges of scarce CAPEX to update an aging infrastructure with disparate and outdated systems. Solution GE s broad range of distribution solutions provides greater visualization, control and automation for centralized and decentralized applications. Advanced analytical tools & distribution automation solutions are all connected by a secure communications network to provide the management and controls needed to minimize downtime through improved power system efficiency and reliability.
T&D Challenge Restoring Power Quickly Damage & losses from severe weather costs the global economy an annual $ 200 BILLION Hurricanes, thunderstorms & blizzards account for 58% of power outages Super storm Sandy caused $65B in damage in the US affecting 8.1M people In Germany, a one hour power outage costs the economy an estimated $600M View Sources EXPLORE & INTERACT
