4 NOTICE The Industry and Merchandising Division of the Bureau of Statistics collects and compiles figures on (a) the primary industries in Canada mining, forestry and fishing; (b) manufacturing; (c) construction, and (d) merchandising and services. For the purpose of annual compilation and publication, the manufacturing industries have been classified Into major groups, prefaced by two reports of a general nature, as follows: I Summary Report on Manufacturing Industries II Manufacturing Industriee by Geographical Distribution III Foods and Beverages IV Tobacco and Tobacco Products V Rubber Products VI Leather Products VII Miscellaneous Manufactures VIII Textiles IX Wood and Paper Products X Printing Trades XI Operations in the Woods XII Iron and Steel Products XIII TransportatiQn Equipment. XIV Non-ferrous Metal Products XV Electrical Apparatus and Supplies XVI Non-metallic Mineral Products XVII Products of Petroleum and Coal XVIII Chemicals and Allied Products The present report belongs in Group XVII. It is punched to permit of filing in a ring binder along with others of the group. The reports in this group are: A General Review B The Coke and Gas Industry C The Petroleum Products Industry
5 THE COKE AND GAS INDUSTRY 1949 Production from coke plants and from illuminating and fuel gas plants in Canada declined slightly in 1949, dropping to $96,934,506 from the $97,027,694 of the previous year. Output included 3,864,603 tons of coke valued at $53,366,965 at the works, 72,085,633M cubic feet of gas valued at $35,710,299. and by-products valued at $7,857,242. Twenty-six coke and gas works operated In 1949, including 9 by-product and bee-hive plants, 13 retort coal and water gas plants, and 4 plants which distributed propane thrpugh the regular gas mains. Twelve of these works were located in Ontario, 5 in Quebec, 4 in British Columbia, 2 in Nova Scotia, and 1 in each of, Newfoundland, Manitoba and Alberta. In addition to these producers, 1 company in Quebec and 3 in Ontario purchased gas to be distributed for domestic or commercial use. Data covering their operations have been included to round out the figures for the industry. Figures on the distribution of propane in cylinders are not Included. Output of coke from gas retorts, by-product and bee-hive ovens totalled 3,864,603 tons in 1949 compared with 3,945,776 tons In 1948 and 3,514,151 tons in By-product and bee-hive ovens produced 3,599,121 tons of coke in 1949 and gas retorts made 265,482 tons. In addition, 117,369 tons of petroleum coke were recovered in petroleum refineries and 16,975 tons of pitch coke in coal tar distillation plants. Data on the distribution of coke(except petroleum and pitch coke) by the producers show that 94,451 tons were sold direct to domestic consumers. 2,009,882 tons were used in associated works operated by the producing companies; 385,786 tons were used by coke plants as fuel or to make water gas; 630,029 tons were sold direct to consumers for foundry and other uses (other than domestic); 4 54,154 tons were sold to dealers for resale, and 274,211 tons were sold for export. Total stocks of coke in the hands of producers amounted to 326,938 tons at the end of Imports Into Canada of coke made from coal decreased to 418,134 tons in 1949 from 544,081 tons in 1948; and exports Increased to 273,112 tons from 167,299 tons. Imports of petroleum coke during this period decreased to 298,102 tons from tons and exports (including re-exports of imported coke) decreased to 21,840 tons from 32,785 tons. Manufactured gas, sold and used, amounted to 72,085,633M cubic feet in 1949, including 55,231,648 M cubic feet from by-product ovens and 16, M cubic feet from gas plants. Sales of gas by the producers totalled 24,687,925 M cubic feet, of which 14,752,226 M cubic feet were from by-product ovens and 9,935,699 M cubic feet were from gas works. Most of the remaining gas was used as fuel in the producing plants or in their associated metallurgical works. These figures do not include 46,875 M cubic feet of (Pintsch) oil gas for lighting railway cars, 12,982,436 M cubic feet of still gas recovered at petroleum refineries, nor iron blast furnace gas and producer gas which was recovered and used by the producers but for which no records are available. The number of customers served with manufactured illuminating and fuel gas as of December 31, 1949 was 581,029, the length of distributing mains was 4,154 miles, and the average calorific value of the gas sold, not including propane gas, ranged from B.T.U. per cubic foot. Data for empioyees, etc., forfl distributing companies are Included in the industry totals but duplication in gas purchases and sales as between producers and distributors has eliminated. 2. Includes 4 firms which distributed propane gas through regular gas mains. Note. Profits or losses cannot be calculated from above figures as data are not available for general expense items, such as interest, rent predation, taxes, insurance, advertising, etc. TABLE 3.
