NOTICE The Industry and Merchandising Division of the Bureau of Statistics collects and compiles figures on (a) the primary industries in Canada mining, forestry and fishing; (b) manufacturing; (C) construction, and (d) merchandising and services. 3 1riA ii-ujvva 1uLLii6 1U& iin1jubik 1950 This industry includes all establishments which were occupied chiefly in making or repairing railway cars and locomotives or in making parts for same such as wheels, brakes, tires,bolsters, springs, etc. Production in 1950 was valued at $194,286,237, a decline of 21.3 per cent from the corresponding total of $246,754,026 for Output included new railway cars valued at $33,213,687, new locomotives at $22,285,122 and other lines such as railway car wheels, parts for railway cars and locomotives, repair work, etc. Thirty-eight establishments were in operation in this group in 1950, there being 16 in Ontario, 10 in Quebec, 4 in Manitoba, 3 in Nova Scotia, 3 in Alberta, 1 in New Brunswick and 1 in British Columbia. Only the larger repair shops were Included. Employees in 1950 numbered 29,257 and salaries and wages for the year totalled $73,356,659. Materials used in tranufacturing or repair work cost $110,373,110, and fuel and power costs amounted to $4. 156,966. TABLE 1.
