1 Iep. of Ma*&v & * CATALOGUE No DOMINION BUREAU OF Si 1 ARTS RLY OTTAWA - CANADA Published by Authority of the Minister of Trade and ibrary Vol. 47, No. 3 Price: 25 cents, $1.00 a year COMMERCIAL FAILURES UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE BANKRUPTCY AND WINDINC UP ACTS THIRD (JARTER 1968 The total number of business failures under the provisions of the Bankruptcy and Winding Up Acts during the third quarter of 1968 has been estimated at 538 compared with 606 for the third quarter of Estimated defaulted liabilities were considerably lower at $38,613,000 in comparison with $75,543,000 for the same quarter of Failures and Liabilities by Industries The largest number of bankruptcies occurred in the Trade industry with 238 failures compared with 247 in the third quarter of Liabilities in this sector decreased from $13,695,000 to $10,384,000. In the manufacturing industries the number of insolvencies increased from 50 to 55 but the liabilities declined from $6,981,000 to $4,546,000. Failures in the construction industry decreased from 43 to 31 and the liabilities from $31,719,000 to $8,004,000. Similarly the finance industry experienced a smaller number of failures, from 30 to 23 with liabilities slightly lower than in the third quarter There were fewer bankruptcies in the service industry and the liabilities were considerably lower. Liabilities Regionally hue the number of business failures decreased fractionally in the third quarter of 1968 compared with last year's rter, corresponding liabilities decreased sharply from $23,098,000 to $8,539,000. Estimated liabilities in Quebec delin..d sharply in this quarter from $48,373,000 to $23,548,000 with a decline in the number of failures from 365 to 280. The number of insolvencies in the Prairie Provinces increased from 25 to 39 and the liabilities from $982,000 to $3,877,000. Bankruptcies in British Columbia increased from 18 to 30 and the liabilities from $1,079,000 to $2,466,000. Failures by Size of Liabilities The data presented in Table 4 indicate that the greatest number of failures involved businesses with liabilities in the $5,000 to $25,000 size group. Bankruptcies in the $25,000 to $50,000 groups increased from 123 to 141 in the third quarter comparison. Failures in the $100,000 and over bracket declined sharply in this quarter. Coverage The statistics of failures in this report are limited to those bankruptcies filed under Federal legislation (the Bankruptcy and Winding up Acts) and does not include failures, sales or seizures carried out under other legislation. In Table 6 the number of failures of wage earners is shown but the amount of liabilities is not recorded. Proposals from insolvent persons are not included in the bankruptcy data but when such proposals are rejected by the creditors the proceedings may then come under the Bankruptcy Act. In Table 6 the number of proposals is shown to give a general impression of the trend.
