Losae CAN*eA CANADA Annual Steel Report A " IA L THE HALWAY E Iron and Steel and Their Products Group BIELCr. -UE This lndus'try inciuces a11 wsaonamme nts which were occupied chiefly in making or repairing railway cars and looinotives or in making parts for same, such as wheels, brakes, tires, bolsters, springs, etc. Production in 1946 was valued at $162,159,521 including $31,831,866 for new railway care, $25,966,332 for new locomotives, $17,786,185 for repair work, $5,419,603 for car and locomotive parts, and $81,155,535 for miscellaneous products. Thirty-seven establishments were in operation in this group in 1946, there being 15 in Ontario, 10 in Quebec, 4 in Manitoba, 3 in Nova Scotia, 3 in Alberta, 1 in New Brunswick and 1 in British Columbia. Only the larger repair shops were included. The average number of employees in 1946 was 28,553 and salaries and wages for the year totalled $57,815,845. Materials used in manufacturing or repair work coat $83,937,365 and fuel and power costs amounted to $3,567,091.
