3 Preliminary Indications of the Dairy Situation, April, The preliminary estimate of milk produced in April is 1,578,000,000 pounds. his is 1.3 per cent less than production in the same month last year and would make the total estimate of production during the first four months of the year 5,155,000,000 pounds. This is 1.1 per cent higher than production in the January April period a year ago. Approximately 56 per cent of the milk produced in April, or 878,300,300 pounds, was used for dairy factory products. This was an increase of 0.9 per cent over factory utilization in April, Less milk was utilized for the manufacture of creamery butter during April, 1964, almost offsetting increases of 9.6, 3.3 and 1.1 per cent in milk utilization for factory cheese, concentrated whole milk pro. ducts and ice cream mix, respectively. During the January April 1.eriod, 2.3 per cent more milk was used in dairy factory products than in the corres 1 onding period in TABLE 1. S According to indications from the monthly survey of farms keeping mllk cows, milk and cream consumed in farm homes was 1.3 per cent below that used In April, 1963, while milk used for livestock feeding dropped 26.4 per cent from that of a year ago due to sharply reduced quantities in Ontario and uebec. Farm dairy correspondents participating in the survey report 1.3 per cent fewer COWS kept on farms at April 15, and 1.3 per cent less cows being milked than at the same date 1at year. Milk production per cow, for COW8 milked on farms in the sample, ins creased 1.3 per cent above the level at April 15, The estimate of total milk production Is not based entirely on the farm sample but is the sum of the estimates of milk utilization.
