If you would like to contribute to On the Ball, please us at marketing@cequent. com.au Another three months have gone, and it s hard to believe that we re half-way through the year. We have been extremely busy over the last three months with Hayman Reese both in-person and online. For those who were fortunate enough to come to Melbourne for the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo (AAAE), it was great to see you at our booth and catch-up in person. Over 3 days, the AAAE show hosted visitors from various automotive trades. If you didn t catch the news back in April, the Hayman Reese Hitch Step won the gold medal for the Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product at the 2017 Australian Auto Aftermarket Awards. Our industry and end-customers recognise Hayman Reese Hitch Step is a great product. Early sales of the Hitch Step have been strong make sure you don t miss out! In the digital world we ve continued our Hayman Reese online advertising leading up to Easter. We ve found the carsales.com.au website to be helpful in creating and sending customer enquiries to your door. Over the last three months, we also created and promoted Hayman Reese towing articles that help consumers understand towing safety and the importance of having the right tow set-up. These programs reinforce Hayman Reese as the experts in towing solutions and generate awareness of Hayman Reese products that you can convert into real sales opportunities. As always, we re committed to building the widest range of towbar fitments for the Australian market. Unlike other towing brands who only have the high selling fitments, we focus on the high, mid and low selling fitments. You ll see on page 6 we ve added 5 new fitments in the last three months. Where possible, our commitment is to have a bar for almost every car. We ve also released 4 new Hayman Reese accessories that are complementary to our range of towing and weight distribution solutions. Again, another reason to help increase sales for your business. 3 nsw C & C Show 25 th to 30 th of April 2017 The 2017 NSW Caravan, Camping and Holiday show went off with a bang. With a bright and sunny Sydney day, the first day saw the most attendees recorded in years! With a late 12pm start on ANZAC day, we had hordes of consumers waiting to see, and speak to our experts on site. Displaying our wide range of accessories and Weight Distribution systems, our site was situated outside close to our fellow customers Anaconda, Kangaroo Tent City and ARB. 60,487 Attendees over the 6 day show Once again, we had Gary Gardiner set up doing hourly demonstrations of how weight distribution systems work. Utilising both the male and female staff on our site, he was able to show how easy it can be to lift springbars into place using the jockey wheel or trailer stand. The show recorded the highest attendance, on ANZAC day, in over 5 years 14,539 attendees The stand generated a lot of interest across many different products in our range. The Hitch Step was put on a podium, having recently won the 'Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product Award'. With a lot of interest in our towbar range, we were able to refer consumers to their closest distributor. 4 Hayman Reese Hitch Step wins gold The Hayman Reese Hitch Step has been chosen as 2017 s Most Innovative New Aftermarket Product (Accessories), by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA). The award celebrates the innovation and value the product brings to the market. The Hayman Reese Hitch Step provides a solution for the ever growing heights found in popular SUV and 4WD vehicles. The aim was to produce a product that could be installed without removing the tow ball, may be left in place whilst driving and when towing and most importantly, keep the user safe. The step released in October 2016 features a high grade aluminium body with machine cut non-slip tread, giving great protection against the elements and remaining aesthetically pleasing. MOST INNOVATIVE NEW AFTERMARKET PRODUCT 2017 australian automotive aftermarket expo 6 th to 8 th of April 2017 AAAE What better way to get in front of the industry than the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Expo (AAAE). The expo held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is a 3 day show that brings together suppliers, buyers and industry professionals to promote and reinforce brands in the market. Coming off a win at the awards breakfast, the team were pumped and ready to tell the industry of all the exciting products Hayman Reese has to offer. Our stand consisted of products across all of our Cequent brands, showing both the parts in both a packaging and open version. This gave a better indication of our total product offerring in all areas of the industry. The Hayman Reese SmartClick board was on display, giving a better understanding of all the wiring options you have when towing. Over the 3 days, it was great to see our team interacting with customers, suppliers and industry officials, with a clear message that we are the towing experts. 5 sway controllers with Gary Gardiner There are two main styles of sway control devices, proactive and reactive. Proactive are commonly mechanical style devices and reactive are generally electric style. While both have positions in the towing market there are some differences that need to be considered. Mechanical Devices Mechanical devices like our Hayman Reese Friction and Dual cam Sway Controllers are used to limit the van from swaying in the first place. Friction Sway Controller Friction sway controllers are great for lighter tow ball weights. Some things to consider when using Friction Sway Controllers include: a. For the best performance, it should be used in conjunction with a weight distribution system (WDS) to give maximum stability and control. Since 2011, Hayman Reese WDS have the friction sway control mounting tab built into the Trailer Ball Mount (TBM). b. The system can be fitted directly to a TBM, using the optional bracket plate. c. They are better suited to trailers that have a tow ball weight under 200kgs. If used on higher ball weights, ideal performance may not be achieved. d. Set up will require some vehicle and trailer specific fine tuning. Using two fingers wind the handle as far as you can, ensuring the handle stops at the next horizontal. Take the car and van for a drive, if you still feel the van swaying then stop and wind the handle another 180 degrees. Go for another drive. Continue repeating the process until you feel the van no longer being affected by sway but still able to manoeuvre around corners and drive comfortably. Dual Cam Sway Controller The dual cam sway controller is the superior mechanical sway controller available. It positively and proactively controls the amount of sway movement from the caravan when affected by cross winds or when being over taken by larger vehicles. Some things to consider when using the Hi-Performance dual cam system are: a. A correctly installed WDS is required. b. The spring bars of the WDS need to have the hook/cam in the end of them (as shown in the images to the right). From early 2011, this comes standard on Hayman Reese WDS. c. For best results the caravan tow ball weight, ideally needs to be above 200kgs. Although this system will work with lower tow ball weights, the higher the tow ball weight the better. d. During initial fitment, proper aligning of the dual cam arm and the spring bar hook is paramount. Without this, the system will not reach its optimum performance. e. Use of the optional bolt on bracket is encouraged. This prevents any holes being drilled into the trailer a-frame. electric Devices Electrical Sway control devices while having a good place in the market, are predominately reactive systems. This means they sit at rest and wait for the trailer to start swaying and then respond accordingly. In some cases the trailer may need to have two sway movements before they engage. Electrical devices fitted to the trailer will engage the trailer brakes to a pre-set output until the sway is removed. At the same time, systems fitted as part of the tow vehicle will engage the stability control functions of the vehicle, again until the sway is removed. 5 On the Ball - July Edition
