2 Component Substitution Give a brief outline or general view of the substitution. Currently Group Nc allows those using the Ford 351 Windsor engine (XW GT Falcon and 1969 Mustang) to fit the World Products Senior 200cc cylinder head. However under the following points I wish to apply for an alternative. The Dart Iron Eagle 200cc The following Component Substitution Criteria from section of the CAMS Manual of Motor Sport, 5 th Category Historic Cars must be addressed as part of the submission. 1. Is the original component no longer available (NLA) or available only at an exorbitant cost? Supply evidence of component NLA or exorbitant cost. The Australian Historic Touring Car Association recently granted the use of the cast iron RHS 180cc cylinder head as an alternative to the World Products Junior cylinder head for those competitors who are competing with a 302 Ford Windsor engine. AHTCA recognised that there is a supply difficulty with no Australian agent selling the World Products Junior cast iron cylinder head, this situation extends to the World Products Senior Page 2 Thursday, 4 July 2013

3 cylinder head also. My original intention was to seek approval for the use of the RHS 200cc cast iron cylinder head. The RHS 200cc cylinder head is a direct alternative to the World Products Senior 200cc cylinder head, in the same fashion that the RHS 180cc cylinder head is a direct alternative to the World Products Junior 180cc cylinder head. However it has became evident despite the recent allowance to use the RHS 180cc cylinder head as a replacement for the World Junior 180cc cylinder head, the RHS 180cc cylinder head has also become difficult to obtain. I rang the RHS (Racing Head Services) factory in Michigan USA and they have confirmed that the RHS 180cc and 200cc cast iron cylinder heads have been discontinued and the last batch was produced late The warehouse supply at the time of my phone call to RHS was one set of 180cc and two sets of 200cc cast iron cylinder heads on their shelves and they weren t to be replaced. I also feel that the RHS200 cylinder heads doesn t qualify as a substitute cylinder head as it offers a performance advantage over the Wold Products Senior cylinder head which is explained later in this submission, as such the RHS200 fails to meet the guidelines of section So the status quo of limited cast iron cylinder head supply remains for both the Ford Windsor 302 and 351 engine. 4 2. Will the substitute component give a demonstrable performance gain? Supply old part number and new part number indicate how the part will/will not give a performance gain. After researching for suitable Ford Windsor cast iron cylinder head replacements, most brands no longer manufacture cast iron cylinder heads of any sort. There is however one alternative who s company pioneered the aftermarket Ford Windsor cast iron cylinder head way back in the early 90 s. That company is Dart Machinery and their SBF Iron Eagle 200cc. The Dart SBF Iron Eagle 200cc offers a slight performance decrease when compared to the World Products Senior 200cc cylinder head. As this proposal is based on availability over performance, a slight loss in horse power is a small price to pay and availability is the priority. Though each submission is considered on its own merit and one approval doesn t set a precedent for another application, it is of interest however to note that the recently approved RHS 180 to be used on the 302 Windsor has a demonstrated exhaust flow advantage when compared to the World Products Junior cylinder head. The superior exhaust design of the RHS 180 cylinder head provides an optimal intake port vs. exhaust port flow ratio of 80%. i.e the exhaust flow is 80% of the intake flow. 100cfm intake = 80cfm exhaust in an ideal situation. RHS180 World Products Junior 80% 69% The following table compares the RHS 200cc, World Products Senior 200cc and the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc cylinder heads. The RHS 200 has been included as a performance reference as it is the larger version of the RHS 180 in the same way the World Products Senior is a step up from the World Products Junior. Also of importance is that when compared to both the World Products Senior 200cc and RHS Pro-action 200cc cylinder heads the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc is at a performance disadvantage. 6 The table below shows that RHS has not only achieved the perfect intake/exhaust ratio with its RHS180 cylinder head, but to reinforce how well these heads are designed the RHS200 also has the perfect 80% ratio. The World Products Senior head is marginally compromised at 74% intake/exhaust airflow ratio. The Dart Iron Eagle has strong intake flow figures but highly compromised exhaust port flow. Meaning there is potential for airflow to get into the cylinder, but the restriction to the exhaust flow acts as a bottle neck. An inferior 62% intake/exhaust flow ratio is the disadvantage of the SBF Dart Iron Eagle 200cc. With no allowance of porting to the exhaust ports within the Group Nc rules this design compromise cannot be rectified. This can be likened to an airflow restrictor been applied to the exhaust side rather than the usual intake side when such restrictors are fitted to reduce airflow as a parity measure. Intake to exhaust port airflow percentages. RHS200 World Products Snr. Dart Iron Eagle 80% 74% 62% So in comparison the Dart Iron Eagle is at a performance disadvantage to the World Products Senior, and the RHS designed a cylinder head that out performs them both. However the basis for this application is once again based on product availability with no performance improvement. The Dart SBF Iron Eagle 200cc cast iron head is advertised as a Street Performance head with a maximum operating range of 6800rpm. The cylinder head has intake and exhaust valve sizes 2.02 /1.60. Standard Ford production valve angles and valve spacing s are retained, as are the original Ford straight line exhaust flange bolt pattern. *****PLEASE NOTE***** Flow numbers and all specifications within this submission in relation to both the Dart Iron Eagle 200 SBF and World Products Senior and Junior cylinder heads are directly provided from the respective manufactures tech sheets. 7 magazine July 2006 as these heads are no longer in production and the technical specifications are no longer available from the RHS website. These documents are provided within this submission. Dart products are supplied by Australia s two largest performance parts resellers, Rocket Industries and Performance Wholesale Australia. Neither Rocket Industries nor Performance Wholesale Australia stock World Products heads of any type, with Rocket Industries discounting the World Products line mid Furthermore I contacted Dart Machinery to enquire if Dart Machinery is going to keep producing the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc cast iron cylinder head, in an era that has seen most manufactures discontinue producing cast iron cylinder heads. Alloy aftermarket cylinder heads have reduced in price to such an extent that they have superseded the heavy cast iron cylinder head. Reply from Dart Machinery: Hello Andrew Thanks for your inquiry. Dart Machinery is not looking to discontinue the SBF 200cc Iron Eagle cylinder head anytime in the near future. It has been and will be in production for quite a while. Thanks B.J. 8 3. Is the substitute component similar in appearance and design to the original? Supply Photos or Drawings or original and substitute components As a direct fit replacement cylinder head, the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc is of a standard style and appearance. Original Ford parts such as valve covers, intake and exhaust manifolds are fitted without modification. Additionally the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc cylinder head has the original accessory bolt holes to provide fitment of power steering, air conditioning, alternators etc. as per the original Ford design. 11 On the following pages is an extract from the 2013 Dart Machinery catalogue. Page 81 supplies information for both 200cc and 215cc SBF Iron Eagle cast iron cylinder heads. The 215cc version is designed for larger displacement Ford Windsor engines ie cubic inches and not applicable to this application. While the relevant 200cc is a street performance replacement cylinder head suited to the standard capacity 351ci engine. 4. 12 Ford factory cylinder heads of the late 1960 s and early 70 s and the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc are both produced from cast iron. IN CONCLUSION/ As stated at the beginning of this application the Australian Historic Touring Car Association has recognised the non availability of World Products cylinder heads in the Australian market by allowing the RHS 180 cylinder head to be used as an alternative for those competitors using Ford Windsor 302ci engines. Competitors using the Ford Windsor 351ci engine are in the same predicament as their fellow 302ci competitors with no replacement as it stands. Though slightly down on overall air flow performance when compared to the previously used World Products Senior cylinder head, the benefit of both local supply and future availability outweigh the slight performance disadvantage the Dart Iron Eagle 200cc cylinder head has.
