5 J POTATOES--SWEETPOTATOES Revised Estimates by States , Acreage, Yield, Production, Price and, Farm Disposition and January 1 Stocks The following tables present rflvised estimates the acreage, yield per acre, production, season average price received by growers, and value for the crop years The bulletin also includ<es revised farm disposition for the crop years and the revised January I, , merchantable potato stocks. Yield per acre, production, disposition, stocks, and prices are in hundredweight. SEASONAL GROUPS FOR POTATOES Since potatoes are harvested in some parts the United States every month in the year, the estimates have been divided into six seasonal groups within the calendar year. The States have been classified under the various seasonal groups according to the period, or periods, when the heaviest supplies each crop are usually harvested. Estimates for States are divided among two or more seasonal groups. The six seasonal groups for potatoes are as fo~lows: SEASON Winter Early Spring Late Spring Early Summer Late Summer Fall US UAL TIME OR HARVEST January through March April through first half May Second half May and June July and first hal! August Second hal! August and September October through Decelnber The beginning and end these sea80ns are not fixed dates but approximations, as there is necessarily some overlapping. Generally the marketing season follows closely the harvesting season except for the fall crop where marketing from storage extends into the first six months the following year. The present seasonal group arrangement replaces the old series calendar-year estimates in which the States were classified as Early, Intermediate and Late. BASIS OF REVISIONS The revised estimates are based primarily upon information furnished currently by crop reporters, State Statistician!; and cooperating State agencies. This includes annual State Farm. Census data in some States, check data -- such as rail shipments, Federal-State inspectiona and truck shipments -- and information available through marketing ficials and programs. As customary, whenever data from a United States Census become available, the estimates have been revised to reflect trends indicated by the 195 and earlier Censuses Agricull:ure. UPDATA 1981
