1 P.H.-Econ. costs University of California Agricultural Extension Service Bldg. 1, 4005 Rosecrans Street San Diego 10, California SAN DIEGO COUNTY EGG COST STUDY With Comparisons for 1960 and Prepared by Robert H. Adolph in Cooperation with Egg Producers of San Diego County Thirty-five of the 37 records presented in this study are from poultry egg producers who house layers on wire floor cages and pens. Two of the cooperators have floor pens, Of the 35 records, 7 had individual cages, 3 - wire floor pens, anc1 the rest housed the majority of their layers in cages allowing 4 inches of cage frontage per layer. For example, 12-inch wide cages 3 birds, 16-inch wide cages 4 birds, and 24-inch wide cages 6 layers. Cages are 16 to 18 in. deep. Replacements were mostly scheduled 3 to 6 times during the year, and housed on an age group rotation basis. Six of the cooperators purchased some started pullets mostly to supplement pullets gr01m on their 01.m ranch. Stock used by producers was the leghorn type except for three cooperators who had crosses of the leghorn stock, Feed for replacements was estimated at 24 pounds per pullet replacement, Feed used was all mash with milo as the principal grain ingredient and all calcium and grit were included in the mash, The major method of brooding chicks was the "sunshine brooder" on wire; however, many cf the larger ranches have converted over to floor brooding for the first 6 to 16 weeks of age, Almost all of the producers included Newcastle, Laryngotracheitis, Bronchitis, and Pox in their vaccination programs. Heaviest mortality losses occurred with Laryngotracheitis disease outbreaks. Coryza was a problem on several ranches, Some of these ranches are now including killed coryza vaccinations in their growing stock, TABLE I.
