3 CORVAIR VALVE ROCKER RATIOS By Bob Helt THE CORVAIR LITERATURE You may have noticed that various Corvair documents list two different valve rocker ratios as being in production. Both a ratio of 1.5:1 and 1.57:1 are stated in various documents. Often the 164 CID 95 hp engine is listed as having a 1.5:1 ratio while the other 164 CID engines use a 1.57:1 ratio. The Shop Manuals for all years show just a 1.5:1 ratio being used. Other documents show the 1966 and later engines being credited with a 1.57:1 ratio while the 1965 and earlier engines got a 1.5:1 ratio. Yet the Parts Manuals only show one rocker for replacement. So what is going on? A CORVAIR ENGINEER INVESTIGATES Well known and respected Chevrolet/Corvair engineer, Bob Kirkman, decided to investigate this apparent discrepancy and determine the real situation. As a matter of his qualifications, Bob is a knowledgeable Corvair engineer and is the author of the comprehensive listing and analysis of all the different Corvair cylinder heads Chevrolet documented in their drawing structure. This detailed analysis was published in both the Sept CORSA Communiqué and the CORSA Technical Guide Supplement. WHAT BOB FOUND All Corvair camshaft drawings 1960 thru 1969 except one, reference the valve rockers as having a ratio of 1.57:1. The one exception was the 1962 drawing (long before production was planned) for the 164 CID 95 hp camshaft, , that apparently mis-stated the rocker ratio as 1.50 instead of This error was corrected later, but apparently it was picked up by the tech writers and promulgated throughout much of the subsequent Corvair literature. All other Corvair camshaft drawings for all cams list the rocker ratio as 1.57:1. So Bob concluded the following: No physical changes [to the rocker ratio] were made in any year. All years list [the] 1.57 ratio. The only reference to a ratio of 1.50:1 is on the 95 hp cam drawing in a time period before the part appeared on production cars off the line. It is very likely that someone finally noted a mistake on the drawing and fixed it. Although [all of these Corvair] cams have slightly varying base circles and lifts, they all end up with a reference to 1.57:1. THE FINAL WORD So now we know that all Corvair engines for all years used the design rocker ratio of 1.57:1. ADJUSTING THE VALVE ROCKERS The threads on the rocker studs are 3/8-24, so each turn of the adjustment nut moves the rocker ballpivot up or down by inches. However, when adjusting the rockers, the valves stay stationary (i.e., closed when adjusting a non-running engine) so the rocker pivots at the valve tip. This causes the internal piston in the lifter to reposition via the pushrod. Thus, the movement ratio is now 5:3 or at the lifter. This now produces inches (call it 0.070") of internal piston movement in the lifter for each turn of the adjustment nut. Since most original Corvair lifters allow a range of internal piston movement of about 0.130" and most currently available replacement lifters also allow a movement range of about 0.140", this will provide about a full two turns of the adjustment nut to cover the allowable lifter range. Thus, setting the adjustment at anywhere from ¼ turn-to one full turn inward from zero lash will allow a safe and proper setting. 3

(PROVIDED BY JACK O SHEA) Corvair Production (Model years) All locations are cars only, except as noted Willow Run, MI Kansas City, MO Oakland, CA Van Nuys, CA 1963, 1965 & 1966 St Louis, MO (FCs) Flint, MI (FCs) Oshawa, Ontario, Canada Mexico City, Mexico (CKD) Caracas, Venezuela (CKD) Bienne, Switzerland (CKD) Antwerp, Belgium (CKD) Copenhagen, Denmark Port Elizabeth, South Africa (All 1960 CKD models) Willow Run, Kansas City, Oakland and Van Nuys were Chevrolet assembly plants with adjacent Fisher Body plants. St Louis and Flint were Chevrolet truck plants, although Chevy had full-size car plants in both cities and in St Louis the plants were adjacent. Oshawa was operated solely by GM of Canada Ltd. The CKD plants were operated by GM Overseas Operations (GMOO). CKD stands for Completely Knocked Down in GMspeak. CKD plants were not full up assembly plants, but rather finished the assembly of partially built Corvairs. Reprinted from the July, 2011 Airhorn, the newsletter of the Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts Oil Filter Update by JR Read At the 6/15/11 CCE meeting I did a brief presentation-an update on what is going on with available oil filters for our Corvairs. Some of you will remember that I did a session on filters five or so years ago. It [sic] that time, I brought in a fixture with a sawed off the [sic] edge of a Corvair filter housing. This made it possible to see the contact area between the inner, smaller diameter filter seal and the housing. At that time, most filter manufacturers had gone to placing a U shaped gasket around the outer edge of their filters. The problem with that style was (is) that the inner seal does not make proper contact with the housing and allows at least some oil (maybe most? - don't know) to pass over the top end of the filter without actually passing through the filtration medium. (While I tested many filters 5 years ago, I did not test every possible brand. The only filter with the U gasket around the top which did not present a problem at that time was the orange Baldwin filter. That part number is B-4. If you crank down on the filter bolt hard (something more than the 20 foot pounds listed in the chassis/shop manual) in an effort to close the gap between the housing and the inner seal of the filter, you run a strong risk of splitting the outer U gasket and/or pulling the top of the filter loose from the canister portion. Now for the good news. Dom Perino contacted the folks at Purolator and they have wisely decided to go back to the style that we were all used to in the AC Delco PF4 filter. The part number for the Purolator Filter is L20014 and the box has the word Classic on it. That is still the same part number that they were using before, so if would be a good idea to inspect the actual filter in the "Classic" box before you make a purchase. Some neat things about the new Purolator filter: 1 -Inner and outer seals are like those on a PF4 2 -Plain white in color with NO logo on it 3- Made in USA 4 -Price is around $6.00 I'm now working part time at Advance Auto Parts on Roosevelt Road just a block West of Route 53 in Glen Ellyn, IL. We will be stocking these filters at that store. So, if you are in dire need of a filter-for whatever reason-know that you could get one there by just walking in. Of course, it never hurts to call ahead just to be sure. 4

5 WHAT S HAPPENIING? The 2011 Kingman Air & Auto show will be held this year on October 8-9. There will be a wonderful lineup of aircraft and performers as well as an expanded ground show. There will be a show and shine including street rods, extreme offroad vehicles, motorcycles and military ground vehicles. The Air & Auto Show web page is now up and ready for purchasing Collector Car Show Tickets for the show and shine. This will be a great opportunity to show off your ride and sit on the tarmac and watch a great Air Show. This will not be a judged Auto Show event but each car will receive a commemorative Air & Auto show 2011 Dash Plaque. The entry fee for Vehicle and 2 people for 2 days is discounted to $25.00 and can only be purchased on line or by Advance Purchase. There will be no ticket sales at the gate for collector cars. There are a limited number of vehicles that can enter the Air Field so we would like to encourage early registration. We hope as many car owners as possible will return the second day so the people each day will have a chance to view these beautiful vehicles. 5
