3 President s Notes By Steve Goodman Hello fellow PPCC members: Thanks to all who attended the April meeting, the year is just sprinting past, isn't it. First off, the Tri-State Corvair Meet in Canon City is growing near. Last minute questions and details will be addressed at the meeting on May 2. NOTE THE DATE CHANGE, the meeting has been moved up a week due to Mothers Day. Kermit and Paul have worked tirelessly to make certain everything is in place this year. It is always interesting to watch the changes as each month passes. It seems many of the motels and restaurants these days don't have employees who stay around so every time is a new adventure. A big 'THANK YOU' to those are helping to make this year a great weekend. Remember May 14, 1969; a day that will live in infamy (among us Corvair lovers). That is the last production day of the Corvair. The story goes that number 6000 (last car off the assembly line) refused to start and had to be pushed away. I don't know 1964 Corvair Convertible Always garaged, under 97,000 miles. Robin egg blue $8,000. Call that it is a true tale but it sounds good anyway. It is a shame that GM allowed the Corvair to fall between the cracks so to speak. Granted the car (as we know it anyway) wouldn't be in production today but with some help it certainly could have weathered the next generation of changes. Think about the experimental air cooled engine that was tested, a 170ci with separate cylinder/head units to alleviate many of the oil leaks (no oil return tube O-rings) and better breathing head/valve train and a multi-carb intake manifold log. Plus the oil cooler was much larger and the entire package would slip right into the Corvair engine bay. Our beloved Corvair certainly could have lasted the next 3-5 year production range, even the horsepower/torque of the new engine was improved. With the addition of a 5 speed manual transmission the Corvair could have well represented itself against the choked V8s of the early 70s with all of the emission equipment added. Of course the emission issue is what would have spelled doom for our air-cooled engine in the end. Enough 'wishful thinking', lets remember the life of the Corvair by driving one on May 14. The last item of interest is that Garrie/ Patricia Fox (not sure which one and I had better err on the side of good judgment and say "Patricia") suggested a drive to Garden of the Gods after the May 2 meeting. To my way of thinking it is a heck of an idea, it will give us something to do with our Corvairs instead of just driving home. I believe they are working on a finishing spot with a Dairy Queen or Sonic. I can't wait to have us all pull into one of these places and watch the folks look at the cars and probably talk to us about their Corvair story. 8 The DRIPLINE Secretary s Report April 10, 2010 Don t forget our next meeting will be on May 2nd so we won t have it on Mother s Day. The Jay Cees are having a car show in June. Call Steve Goodman for details. It was also mentioned there is a great annual car show at the School of Mines in Golden. Watch for it next year! Kermit and Paul reported on the Tri-State. There will be plenty of parking at the Quality Inn and an opportunity to wash our cars if they need them. Be sure to call or Paul with your menu choices for the dinner and get in touch with Kermit about your T-shirt orders. Steve suggested we send a news release about the show and shine to the local papers. Patricia Fox suggested we have all attendees sign and date our banner.
