Last year Dave suggested it was time for a new editor and, well, I m the brave new guy! I will try a few different formats so don t be surprised if the newsletter s appearance changes here and there. My plan is to include a feature article and a short technical article in every issue. Going Live: RER Online Also new, beginning with the next issue; our RER, instead of being a large file you have to download, will be a link to the club website s new RER section. This change provides your RER content without waiting for a Where will I, the editor, get all this fine content you might be asking yourself? Well, let me just say Don t be surprised if my call rings at YOUR house once and a while. (Grin) The newsletter front page will include upcoming events at a glance and in index so you ll know right where to find what you re looking for. Well, let s get on with it! 3 Page 3 Rear Engine Review Upcoming: Spring Tech n Tune! Previously on Tech n Tune... Have a small maintenance or repair project but just can t find the time or the proper hammer? Yes? Then the Tech n Tune is for you. One of our most popular events, the Tech n Tune mixes fun, food, and fan belts; sometimes onto the same plate. Bring your project, parts you think you might need and a potluck dish for a Sunday of fun. The day usually starts with breakfast munchies and coffee and slowly progresses into submarine sandwiches and cookies. Between courses, Craig s well equipped shop and lift are in constant use. Whether it s shocks, headlight alignment, or a wiring issue, someone there always seems to have the expertise and six other people watch and point as the work progresses. Checklist: Corvair Parts Pot luck dish Good humor Saturday April 13th, 10am Chuck, Kathy, and Scott Huggins 62 Rampside Driving a machine with no windows on a 35 degree day brought new meaning to the concept of wind chill. After three short years in the body shop, Chuck and Scott decided to take matters into their own hands and get their project back on track. The first task was to round up the rig, the donor rig, and whatever else they could salvage and bring it over to Craig s shop for a little motivation. Scott and Craig (mostly Scott) spent the next couple of weeks installing the rebuilt engine and converting it to use an automatic transmission. Along the way it received new brakes, fuel system and a zillion minor repairs. All went well and for the first time in as long an anyone can remember (a period often extending long before breakfast), it s a running, driving machine. Craig and Scott sat on a block of wood and an old car radio (respectively), donned their aviator goggles, and took the windowless machine for a short jaunt around the neighborhood. Driving a machine with no windows on a 35 degree day brought new meaning to the concept of wind chill but giddy excitement kept them warm. We re not sure how pilots of open cockpit aircraft ever survived. Schnapps and leather skull caps may have been a factor. Scene of the crime!

4 Page 4 Volume 1, Issue 1 Clark s Catalog Clarks 2013 catalog is in print and starting to get out there. The cover claims 15,000 parts in stock and that s true, no doubt. Since Cal restored his Rampside (reportedly by his own hand) he evidently took that project as a cue and has added dozens and dozens of new parts for the Corvair Forward-Control trucks.; notably door sill trim and gas tank sending units. About the catalog... Sadly, it s still the same old format with all its warts. The internet version is still identical too but the internet version does have the advantage of purchasing hints (what else you re probably forgetting) plus the price page brings all the options (Reproduction, New Old Stock, and Used) together for easy price comparisons. One gets the sense that Clarks is phasing out of Used parts; as many listings come up with zero inventory. All in all though, Clarks does a fantastic job providing us with what we need to keep thise 50 year old cars on the road. Yeah Clarks! Caption describing picture or graphic. Stunning Corvair Trike This newly created Corvair trike may be the most imaginative thing ever done with a Corvair. (In this editor s opinion, anyway) Neal Kurchner or Tin Element LLC, Loveland Colorado finished and first showed his creation about seven months ago. To say the crowd went wild would be an understatement. As you might imagine, Neal faced many challenges in the build, the most interesting being the reworking of the quarter panels. Initially, the car sides were installed with original flat fenders. During mock-up, they discovered that while the arrow point shape looked great, the tapered sides made the rear tires appear to be radically toed-out. Neal created tapered fender flares (wide at the front) that square with the wheels and that brought it all together. The cockpit seats two and utilizes a stock Sypder dash. Unlike most trikes that just use a motorcycle front fork, and headlight, Neal integrated two Corvair fenders with a single Corvair headlight bezel and sectioned Corvair bumper to create a new, but strangely familiar, look.
