4 VEGAS VAIRS MAY PAGE 4 President s Message: Message from the President Hey guys and gals - As always running late on my letter, but here we go. Well I have again fallen off my not going to buy anymore cars wagon. But in my defense I did sell 3 cars, 2 Corvairs and my hand me down 2004 Hyundai Tiberon. Hand me down because my lovely daughter over the last year has decided that she liked my Mazda 3 (Annual road trip car) more than I did. I got her car the Tiberon, so of coarse I Had to buy a new road trip car. Every year in July my son and I take a vacation and drive on an average of about 3,000 miles. Up the California coast into Oregon. To see family and do some fishing. Anyway the first and only new Car I ever bought was a 1983 VW GTI I loved that car, did a lot of cool custom things to it. Showed it all over CA Taos Tri State June by Terry Price, Corvairs of New Mexico, Taos Topics #5 Joe Casey To Speak At Tri-State. Who is Joe Casey, you ask? For the 1969 model year only 6,000 Corvairs were scheduled to be manufactured. The last few of these Corvairs were assembled by hand in the "Corvair Room" at the General Motors Willow Run Plant. Joe Casey was the supervisor of the room and will give an interesting talk at our awards banquet. You won t want to miss it! Another addition to the Tri-State Show and Shine will be Kevin Casaus of "Gay Rhythm Productions" providing music from the 50 s, 60 s, 70 s and 80 s during the show. He will also be announcing the winners of a number of raffles and prizes during the Show and Shine. We will be listening to Kevin s sound system during our banquet. The Points for the Attendance Award will be awarded as follows: All who attend should fill out a registration form. One point will be given to the member registering for the Taos Tri-State. One point will be given to the registered spouse of the member. One point will be given for each immediate family member registered. One point will be given to any member registering his/her Corvair for the Show-and-Shine who for any reason does not attend the Banquet. and AZ. The car made Hot VW and VW Porsche magazine 4 times. 3 months after paying it off I got wiped out by a drunk driver while sitting at a stop light with my then pregnant wife. Very Scary got pretty shook up but everyone was ok. I have been wanting another one ever since, not the most practical family car. So 30 years later the wife is gone kids are grown, and daddy gets a new toy! Off to the internet, I found the exact one I wanted a 2013 Red 2 door VW GTI In Austin TX. YeeeeHaaaw! so my son and I flew out to Texas made the deal and took it on a 1,300 mile test drive. Loved every mile of it! Well enough about my addictions. The Spring Picnic is coming up, should be lots of fun. Oh yeah no meeting this month. See ya all soon - Mike the Prez. One point will be given to the spouse of a member registering his/her Corvair for the Show-and-Shine, if present, who for any reason does not attend the Banquet. If the registrant is a member of more than one club, they can add the same number of points for that club as well. All points will be recorded from the information you enter on your registration form when you check in with us in Taos. We want to count every person participating in the Tri-State and have a count of those present from every club as well as any not affiliated with any CORSA chapter. Finally, if anyone has anything to donate to the Tri-State for prizes, please let me know right away! Contact me at my pricet150@gmail.com account. Remember to reserve your room at The Kachina Lodge in Taos by calling or Ask for Cheryl and don t forget to mention "Corvair Tri-State" for special room rates. Rooms are filling up fast, so don t delay! You also need to go to Larry Yoffee s web site: corsaturbo180usa.com for T-shirt orders and meal selections. This must be done by May 1st. See you in Taos! -- Terry

7 VEGAS VAIRS MAY PAGE 7 Show Report: 32nd Annual Hurricane Easter Car Show Hurricane Utah - April 15, 2017 Thousands gathered for 32nd annual Easter Car Show in Hurricane Utah. Chuck Hanson brought his Ultravan The Whale. Cedar City was represented by Jeff Carter s 1965 fuel injected 3.1 liter (cover) and Rick Spencer s 240hp, supercharged, 3800 Pontiac powered late model (right). Additionally, a portion of the funds raised will go to support a children s charity in Peru. "We ve got over 200 cars and we re collecting charitable donations which the Rotary Club will in turn redistribute to charitable programs here in the area." volunteer Adam Fluckiger of Hurricane said. Numerous vendors sold everything from food to hand-crafted souvenirs while hourly drawings gave away prizes to lucky participants. An engine-revving competition added to the festivities. Whether those who attended Saturday s fundraiser were car enthusiasts or not, it has become a place where many families have gathered for decades. The car show is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Rotary Club, and the event raises anywhere from $10,000$15,000 for the many charities the club supports. Much of the money raised by the club s effort through the year is put back into projects in the Hurricane Valley, such as local nonprofits and city parks and recreation. Nearly 5,000 people attend or participate in the event each year and the car show is considered to be the second largest event held in Hurricane annually.
8 VEGAS VAIRS MAY PAGE 8 Tech Articles & Tips: Gas Gauge Diagnosis From the Preventative Maintenance Series by Mike Dawson Gas gauges for early models, late models and FC vehicles all operate essentially the same; they vary only in the resistances involved. A 12 volt power supply is provided to one side of the dashboard meter and a variable resistance to ground is provided by the in-tank rheostat to the other side of the meter. This varies the magnetism that locates the gauge needle. Use of a quality ohm meter would be a very useful tool; a cheap unit will not read accurately in the range you need, which is ohms. The early model and FC units are a 0-30 ohm resistance and the late model units are 0-90 ohms. Note: there can be a variance of a few ohms when checking sending units, including new ones. Quick Check With the key on, you can check your dashboard meter movement by removing the output wire at the tank; your meter should read over full (On FC models you would have to cut the wire coming from the tank since you cannot reach the connector). Ground that wire and your meter should read empty. Keep in mind that late model dash boards can lose their ground either at the screw attachment or at any of the ground strap connections behind the dash. The dashboard meter will read overfull. After performing the quick check test which confirms that your dashboard meter works properly, the following information may be useful. The majority of the problems will come from one of the following: a missing ground between the tank s sending unit and the body, a float that has sunk, or a bad rheostat or wire on the tank sending unit. There are several tests that can help you determine where the problem is before you start replacing parts. If your dashboard meter reads overfull, the dashboard ground is good and the dashboard meter passed the quick check: There is an open circuit between the dashboard meter and the sending unit, an open in the sending unit itself, or between the sending unit and a good ground. 1. To check the sending unit you would disconnect the wire on the tank sending unit (FC s require cutting the wire unless you pull the tank) and check the resistance between the stud on the sending unit and the sending unit flange. Your ohm meter should indicate some resistance on the scale depending on early or late. If not, then the open is in the sending unit rheostat or the in-tank connection. You might be able to repair the problem but replacing the sending unit, float, pickup filter and seal would be the permanent solution. Stainless steel units are now available. 2. If you register the correct resistance at the tank, then next check the ground for the tank. The ground wire must have a good connection where it is attached to the body. If the ground and the wire are good, then you must have an open in the wire from the tank s sending unit to the dashboard meter. The quick check above would have shown this when you grounded the wire at the tank the gauge unit would not have moved. If you have another sending unit available, hook it up by using a long jumper wire connected to the sending unit wire you have pulled off. With the key on, ground the unit and move the float to observe your meter movement. If the dashboard meter reads empty all the time and the meter passed the quick check, then proceed to the following two possibilities: 1. The float has a hole in it and has sunk to the bottom. Attach your ohm meter to the output stud at the sending unit and to ground. You would read either 0 or only a few ohms, confirming the float is on the bottom. 2. The wire from the sending unit to the dashboard meter is grounded. It could have a screw grounding it or the insulation scraped off around the tunnel pan area or if it is an FC the wire may be pinched between the tank and the body. Other possible causes of erroneous meter readings - I have experienced all of these: The wrong year sending unit has been installed The bottom of the tank has been attacked by a floor jack. A rusty tank has had a liquid liner applied inside without proper cleaning. The liner came off and is under the float like a wadded up newspaper. It is not uncommon to find that those before you have altered wiring for some modification or repaired wiring with nonsoldered connections that corroded. One final note: Before installing a replacement sending unit, use a long jumper and a ground to remotely move the float up and down while observing the dashboard meter. You can adjust the arm movement slightly to get closer to the full or empty mark if necessary.
9 VEGAS VAIRS MAY PAGE 9 Corvair News: Agency Refutes Nader s Corvair Charges, July 21, 1972 Source: Politico Article by Andrew Glass, 7/21/2011 Whether it s at the gas station, the local car show or while out enjoying a leisurely cruise, there s always someone who wants to talk about Ralph Nader and his safety concerns about the Chevrolet Corvair. Most people have never read his book, but misinformation is sticky and seems to have made its way into the national consciousness. The next time you re confronted with this fake news, here is some material for rebuttal. On July 21st in 1972, the National Highway Traffic Administration released results of a two-year study that concluded Chevrolet s Corvair models were at least as safe as comparable models of similar cars sold in the same period. The report contradicted charges made by Ralph Nader, a leading consumer advocate. In his bestselling 1965 book, "Unsafe at Any Speed: The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile," Nader devoted a chapter, "The One-Car Accident," to the Corvair. When it made its debut in 1960, the Corvair won Motor Trend s "Car of the Year" award, thanks to its innovative design and its lightweight, air-cooled, rear-mounted aluminum engine. However, its tendency to oversteer and spin out of control caused problems that led to a redesigned suspension in After Nader s book appeared, Corvair sales dwindled. GM withdrew the car from production in In 1970, at Nader s urging, the U.S. government began a study that compared the 1963 Corvair with five similar vehicles. Nader had criticized the Corvair s handling and stability, as well as its tendency to roll over during sharp turns. The study, however, concluded that the Corvair s handling in a sharp turn did not "result in abnormal potential for loss of control" and that its rollover rate was comparable with that of "other light domestic cars." Nader branded the study "a shoddy, internally contradictory whitewash." He accused the Highway Traffic Administration of using "biased testing procedures and model selection." He argued against testing only the 1963 Corvair, which, he said, was significantly different from the models. The government disputed the charge. Three independent engineers certified the government s findings, calling them "reasonable, appropriate and sound." The study, GM said, "confirms our position on the handling and stability characteristics of these cars." Vegas Vairs Door Magnets Still Available! 12 VEGAS VAIRS MAY PAGE 12 Finish Line: Corvair Swapped 1957 BMW Isetta Reprinted from Bring A Trailer, January 18, 2016 This 1957 BMW Isetta features a 150 HP, four carb Corvair engine among other modifications needed to accommodate the swap, and was reportedly built by a shop class in the 1970s. Dubbed the Corsetta, it s also said to have been featured in a 1977 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. As demonstrated here, the car is prone to wheelies (with a video here) and is further described as being scary fast. The Corsetta was offered for sale on ebay last year from Wilmington, North Carolina. A somewhat unfortunate 70 s staple, diamond pleat upholstery remains in good shape for the most part, although there are some tears in the panel adjacent the driver. Those concerned with safety might consider swapping the bench for buckets, or maybe adding a roll cage and padded steering wheel then again, they probably wouldn t set foot in this car to begin with. The ad doesn t note any recent mechanical work, but the car clearly runs well enough to easily lift its front tires off the ground. Weight distribution and a tiny wheelbase don t hurt here, but with roughly 1,000% more power than standard on offer, the Corvair flat six deserves some credit as well. Noticeably, the rear axle is much wider than the front and was likely swapped from a Corvair as well. We actually dig the flares. stripes and extended tail housing the larger engine, and the ad mentions weights in the front and a wheelie bar mounted beneath the rear faring. Prior to the seller s purchase two years ago, the car had been garaged for ~30 years. Paint and body work were refreshed and repaired where necessary, and despite a noted crack in the recent finish, it looks well done. ebay seller says Hydraulic brakes on back (no front brakes), emergency brake needs some work, if the car ran any better it would be very dangerous. Hats off to anyone brave enough to sit behind the wheel and drive this thing. It seems to be well built, but we ll gladly admire the Corsetta from afar just knowing it exists is enough.
