There was a motion to send Reid Miermaster a check for his expenses with the newsletter and many comments were made about the great job he does on it. Harry Ransom gave the club updates on car shows through January 2017 and those will also appear in future newsletters. A gentleman stopped by to let us know he has a 65 Corvair Coupe with auto transmission for sale. He left pictures and before the meeting was over, John Charaska indicated he was going to call the man to buy it. Chuck Hanson and Vic Howard won trophies for their Corvairs, Chuck s Ultravan (The Whale) and Vic s Greenbrier (Clyde). Our Christmas party will take place at our December 14th meeting at 6:30 p.m. There will be a white elephant gift exchange (invest no more then $15 per gift). The club will pay for the dinners for each member attending. Paul Green said there is an article in Hot Rod Magazine about the races at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Harry asked if the members will be a part of the St. Patrick s Day parade and if the club would again pay the entry fee. A motion was made and seconded to do just that and a check for the fee was given to Harry. There were a number of door prizes given and Bob Helt won the 50/50 raffle. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted by: Ingrid Howard, Secretary/Treasurer Vegas Vairs Door Magnets Still Available! 4 VEGAS VAIRS DECEMBER PAGE 4 Corvair News: Message from the President Hey everybody, I was glad to see a great turn out at the last meeting, I even made it! It's been a busy month haven't made it to many car shows or events. So I thought I would cram 3 into one day. First I stopped by the new location of Coffee & Cars way at the end of LVBLVD. Fair turn out. From there I drove to Boulder City for The Vets Show. Just caught the end of that one. Saw Harry and his beautiful 4 door looking perfect as always. Not sure how he did, he'll let us know. Then off to the event Marty had told us about at the meeting. A Promise for the Perry's at Above the Crust Pizza Shop. Not really car show but we had 4 Corvairs in front of the shop, where they got a lot of attention from a very friendly crowd. And it was for a good cause (see photos below). Put more miles on my new 63 vert that day than it has had in years. Well that's about it for me. Looking forward to the Club Christmas Party hope to see you all there, dress warm and drive a Corvair! Mike The Pres. Club Sponsorship from JC Whitney, Auto Parts Warehouse & CarParts.com Two $100 Store Credit Vouchers for Vegas Vairs provided by US Auto Parts Network, Inc. Club Sponsorship Announcement - Reid Miermaster, Newsletter Editor I was contacted via on October 12th by Julie Ambolario, a representative of US Auto Parts Network. The is shown below: Hi Reid, I was wondering if your club was looking for sponsors for your upcoming activities. We ve currently revamped our outreach program and would very much like to discuss possible partnerships between Vegas Vairs and our brands. We re looking to give away store credits and exposure on our media properties. I can send more details if you re interested. My budget for this campaign is limited so looking forward to hearing from you soon. Best, Julie Ambolario After discussing the offer, I responded that we would indeed be interested in participating. After exchanging several s, Julie arranged for Vegas Vairs to receive two (2) store credit vouchers worth $100 each to be used towards any purchase plus shipping at their online stores. All that s required is that the winners of these certificates click on any link (JCWhitney.com, AutoPartsWarehouse.com, CarParts.com), and then choose any products, providing the full purchase price plus shipping will amount to $100 or below. Julie asked me to note that the full voucher amount must be used in a single transaction. Any unused amount on the voucher will be forfeited. If the full purchase price plus shipping exceed the voucher amount, the difference will need to be paid by the voucher holder. Also, the voucher may not be used in conjunction with any other offers and promotions. She also asked that we not forget to input our complete vehicle information before selecting a part in order to ensure correct product fit. Once a part is chosen, we are asked to send her the link to the chosen product, as well as the shipping address and phone number of the purchaser, and they'll ship the part ASAP! We will be having a drawing for the $100 credit vouchers during the annual Christmas Party on December 14th. Hope to see you there!

VEGAS VAIRS DECEMBER PAGE 6 Corvair History: Corvair Futura Concept Car Reprinted from the March 2009 issue of Tucson s Corvairsation by Paul Crowe, March 18, 2007 Even when you think you have seen most of the concept cars from years past, once in a while one shows up, like this Corvair Futura concept car, that has you scratching your head. I had to stop and look because I just don t recall ever seeing it before. Concept cars from the fifties and sixties had a very period style to them, sort of an optimistic jet powered feeling. I love the look. It is listed on ebay as a 1960 which is about right judging from the Corvair styling from those years and it has a center front driver position like some current supercars. The glass surrounding the driver, including a glass sunroof, adds to the feeling of visibility but you have to wonder what would happen in a frontal crash, it looks like the driver might be the very first person on the scene. There are no pictures of the engine but I imagine it would be pretty standard Corvair power.
VEGAS VAIRS DECEMBER PAGE 7 Show Reports: 2016 Nevada State Veteran s Home Car Show Hosted by Las Vegas Cruising Association On November 12, 2016, the Nevada State Veterans Home was the host site for a mixed class car show organized through the Las Vegas Cruising Association. About 65 cars attended the event. There were two groups of reviewers for trophies. Any attendees could pick five favorites. Also, a separate group of retired and active military veterans made their choices for favorite vehicles. As usual, muscle cars garnered over 90% of the awards. But, it was a special treat for the handicapped vets who were brought out in wheelchairs to view the array of heavy metal. It was a made-you-feel-good kind of show. And, once again, Jerry's Rampside confused a whole bunch of people. All in all it was a beautiful day for a beautiful cause Harry Ransom Classic Car Gathering at Valley of Fire State Park Hosted by Southern California Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg & VMCCA High Rollers Car Club Howdy. Wow, I had a unique experience. The Southern California Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club along with Las Vegas members organized a gathering of these exquisite cars last weekend. It was a three and a half day affair based at the Lake Las Vegas Hilton. Seven "oldies" made the trip; two declined and remained at the Hilton. We had Last August during the VMCCA High Rollers Car Club (of which perfect weather and I'm a member) summer picnic, the organizer was outlining the there were no details of the event which included a convoy tour around Lake mechanical Mead and the Valley of Fire State Park. I simply asked if some difficulties. What's not to like? High Roller members might tag along. An invitation was extended. Hoo boy, you didn't have to ask me twice! Social climbing Harry
VEGAS VAIRS DECEMBER PAGE 8 Tech Articles & Tips: Replacing Springs in Cars The Preventative Maintenance Series By Mike Dawson After 50 years most springs start to settle with convertibles being the most prone to settling. I have changed several front springs that were broken but have not found a broken rear spring. Since tire and wheel combinations can affect riding height all I can attest to is that with 185/80R13 tires the height of the wheel well mounding will be inches front and rear with new springs installed. All springs are available in both standard and heavy duty. Be aware that the HD springs are quite stiff and are shorter (and slightly easier to install), but I would suggest they only be used for racing applications. For installation of front or rear springs you will need quality hand tools, a floor jack and stands, a method of separating ball joints, and a torque wrench for critical nuts and bolts. This would be the time to check bushings in the front and rear trailing arm struts, the trailing arm bushings and the shocks. Plan on checking the rear alignment depending on what you change; camber and toe-in are both adjustable. With the car firmly supported on stands high enough to lower the trailing arm, remove the two lower rear struts from the differential only, do not loosen the outer bolts, simply pull the struts down from the differential. Remove the four nuts and bolts from the two forward struts at the transmission mount. Place a floor jack under the end of the trailing arm but leave access to the lower shock mount. Raise the trailing arm slightly. Loosen the upper shock mount nut about halfway up the threaded area and then remove the lower bolt from the shock mount. Gently let the jack down and watch the axle you may need to rotate it slightly so the U-joints will let the axle drop fully. At this point you can use a pry bar to push down on the hub assembly and remove the spring. It may look like the brake line will limit the travel but there is just enough slack to permit spring removal. Transfer the upper spring seat to the new spring and insert it into the upper tower making sure the indexing lines up. Raise the floor jack and re-attach the shock absorber. Raise the hub assembly to riding height and install the rear struts to the differential (see tech article #103) and then the two front struts to the transmission mount. It is important that the front struts are attached while the wheel is at riding height. Raising the trailing arm also helps with the rear strut attachment to the differential. Front Springs As with changing rear springs, while the fronts are off, check the other parts you will have access to: ball joints, shocks, sway bar bushings, caster strut bushings and A-arm bushings. With the front end up on jack stands high enough for dropping the lower A-arm, lift the lower A-arm to riding height, remove the outer sway bar bushing retainer, and free the caster strut rod from the A-arm (two nuts). Next, lower the A-arm halfway and separate both upper and lower ball joints (best to separate the lower one first). Swing the backing plate assembly out of the way and suspend it with wire so it is not hanging on the brake hose. Raise the A-arm slightly with a floor jack and then completely remove the shock absorber. Let the floor jack down all the way and being careful of the spring, remove it with a pry bar. Note the indexing of the ends of the spring and install the new spring first into the tower and then carefully using a pry bar, install the lower end onto the A-arm. It may look impossible at first but the spring will fit with patience and with being attentive to the indexing of the ends of the spring. Years ago I made a pair of external spring compressors to aid installation but have always been able to coax the springs onto their seat without the compressors. The spring compressors are clumsy to use. Jack the lower A-arm back up until you just start to lift the car off the jack stand and reinstall all the parts. Be sure to torque the lower shock mount to 70 ft lbs.

VEGAS VAIRS DECEMBER PAGE 11 Finish Line: A Vairy Happy Holiday Poem 12/24/ Bob Bacchi - SDCC From the Corvair Center Forum Looking into my archives, I found this original parody poem submitted by Charles and Ruth Peck of the Ontario, CA Corvair Club 33 years ago! 'Twas the night before Christmas and there in his house Nadar was sleeping as quiet as a mouse Nadar heard such a noise, he yelled "What's the matter?" Sounds like a Corvair with it's valves all a-clatter When all of a sudden dear Santa appeared But he was not driving his tiny reindeer Santa shouted "I don't mind the noise 'Cause look at my Vair, it's chock full o' toys Toys for girls...wire wheels with spinners" Toys for boys...finned oil pans, that's a winner! Nader rubbed at his eyes, couldn't believe such a sight The nerve of this guy with his Corvair so bright All Nader heard as the Vair whisked out of sight Was "Merry Christmas and to all a good night" Nader's heart beat, he was having a stroke No! A nightmare, but soon he awoke... All's quiet now, not a trace of the spoils But out on the snow... a small spot of oil! Have a Merry Merry, Bob Bacchi - SDCC
