2 Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our last meeting. It s been a while but tonight there was evan a Corvair in the parking lot as Roger drove his nice, late model coupe (I forgot the year and can t tell just by looking as some people can). Harry has ed me that Carol has Thursday evening support group meetings that she wants to attend and he helps her with this as she has some difficulty getting around. I know personally how beneficial these meetings are. We understand and prey for a complete recovery. Marlene called Clark to report on Fred. He has been in the hospital recovering from an infection. He was expected to be released shortly to go back to Stone Brook in Concord. His overall condition is about the same. I am afraid I haven t been by to see him in the last few months. Shame on me! I know he would welcome visitors. I received an from Harry indicating that he had forwarded a check to Paul for Robert Langdon s dues. Robert had contributed an extra $10 to the Club and I wanted to be sure this got mentioned. Thanks Robert! At the last meeting Seth brought up the subject of hydraulically assisted turbochargers. This was new to me so I dug into this and came up with some interesting (to me anyway) info that you can find on pages 6-7. I didn t have much to include this month so I thought I would put this in. Our next meeting will be at Black Bear Diner on May 5th starting around 7:00 PM. Hope to see you there. And drive your Corvair! 3 Minutes of the Last Meeting April 7, 2016 The meeting was formally called to order about 8:26 by President Tony Richards. Tonight we settled in to our usual spot in the back room of Black Bear Diner. We had 8 members in attendance. As we have been doing for the past few months, we spent the first hour or so having dinner and talking shop. This seems to work out well as the room empties out and we have less noise when our meeting starts. Tony mentioned that tonight marks the 44th anniversary of SFAB Corsa! Art Lebermann was the first elected President (Dave was acting president initially). The first meeting place was a room at Savings and Loan in Fremont. Treasurer s Report: Paul reported that the bank balance stood at $ not including new checks and also not including newsletter expenses of around $168. Paul reported that he has heard back from three advertisers who desire to run paid ads. They are Silicon Wire Systems, California Corvairs, and Ramsell Auto Sales. This nets our club $75/yr. Thanks to Paul and the advertisers! after that it s our choice. Besides saving money this would have the advantage of quicker response as our box is currently checked every 4 to 6 weeks (when Clark gets around to going there). Walt said that when he first joined, it took almost 3 months to hear back from his initial inquiry. The main disadvantage is that the Club s address would change periodically. It takes a while to get the word out but mail is forwarded for a year (magazines only for a couple of months but we don t receive any and junk mail is not forwarded at all (!)). We would have to tell CORSA as they publish a list of club addresses every few issues. It s a good idea and we have plenty of time to discuss it further. We had a Tech Session tentatively scheduled for May but this was put on hold. We know that Harry has his hands full at the moment and this will give everyone more time to prepare. We will keep everyone informed. Tony asked we could get a Tech Editor for the newsletter. There is plenty of material in other club s newsletters (Valley routinely publishes tech articles by Mike Dawson from the Kansas City club newsletter - Seth is a member). This would make the newsletter more interesting. This is a great idea. Do we have any volunteers? Not much work involved and nice way to learn more about Corvair maintenance techniques and contribute to the newsletter! Events: Our June meeting date is scheduled for June 2nd which is right before the VairFest. Should we change the date? We can either expect a small turnout or move the date to the following week, June 9th. The National Convention is scheduled for July 12th through the 16th in Springfield, IL Our Annual SFBA/Valley Picnic is tentatively scheduled for August 6th. Seth suggested that we check for conflicts as some events have changed dates. We will do this and let people know. The Sacramento club will host the Spring-Fling on April Walt will be attending and entering his Corvair (see Minutes... on page 5) Membership: Harry reported that we have two new members this month. Welcome! Old Business: Clark reported that Marlene called to say that if we needed heads to demonstrate de-flashing techniques (as purposed last month for a Tech Session) that Fred had some we could use. She also gave an update on how Fred is doing. He is still recovering at Stone Brook in Concord. New Business: Paul asked if we could eliminate our Orinda PO Box and just have the mailed sent to one person. Valley Corsa did this and saved $100+. Their mail is sent to their President (currently Seth). Clark responded that our box is paid up through October but Treasurers Report April 2016 Paul Lacey Checking Acct. Cash/Checks Beginning Balance $ $00.00 Income Ads (3) $75.00 Expenses Newsletter (Apr) ($42.45) Corsa Club Dues ($35.00) Ending Balance $ (*) $00.00 (*) This is close to the balance of ($ $ = $ ) as reported at the last meeting. - Clark SFBA Corsa - May 2016 page 3

5 Minutes... and staying at a local hotel. Seth is also going but staying at WorldMark in Angles Camp as he has a membership and it s only miles away. Not a bad deal. Central Coast Corvairs will again host the VairFest in Arroyo Grande. This is scheduled for June 3-5. Seth will be driving down on Saturday and back the same evening. The B&B he has stayed at before was already booked and area hotels are expensive. It s only a 3 hour drive for him which isn t too bad. Tech: Phil finally has his car back from MAACO. The last go-round involved fixing some minor drips but the prep person inadvertently sanded through the paint to bare metal in spots so they had to re-shoot the whole panel. It took more time than anticipated but he is happy with the results. Tony checked on the cost to register his 74 Malibu (which hasn t been registered in many years). It stood at $800+. Paul says on a truck of his he had to pay $1800 (some kind of weight issues). Ouch! The subject of turbo technology came up and Seth said that some company had a hydraulic assisted turbo. Apparently too large for our cars but when they come out with a smaller one, this should be interesting. There are also electric turbos. All in pursuit of less lag time. Seth asked if anyone knew how the 64 Steering shaft was mounted but no one could recall the details. This is the first year Chevy went to a single solid shaft. To accommodate this they had to reduce the spline size on the wheel end. This makes the 64 to 66 Corvairs unique in this respect. Seth figured that this made it easier for the factory to assemble. It makes to quick-steering adaptor business more complicated however. Someone said the Dave Newell had a very good video on the Saginaw steering column design. In 67 for all models Chevy went to collapsible steering columns, dual master cylinders, latches on seat belts, and extra padding for dash boards. Walt asked if SFBA had ever had any Club patches produced. Yes, several people had jackets with patches and Seth said that he probably had extra patches acquired after Dean or Bill died. He will look. Swap & Sell: Paul has a smog pump and three gas heaters he will sell along with lots of miscellaneous engine parts (like garbage cans full of carburetors). He needs to clear out his stuff (don t we all?). So if you need ANYTHING, give a call. Phil has gaskets for the windshield of a 66 coupe. He got these in anticipation of replacing his windshield but they were not needed. These are the original GM style as sold by Clarks. Phil is still looking for drip-rail molding for his 66 coupe, passenger s side. Respectfully submitted, Clark Calkins, secretary SFBA Corsa - May 2016 page 5
6 Hydraulic and Electrically Assisted Turbochargers At the last meeting Seth mentioned that he had run into a hydraulically assisted turbocharger. I had not heard about this concept before. Seth indicated that the turbo he had seen, or heard about, was designed for very large engines but if it became small enough this would make an interesting Corvair adaption. I searched around and was surprised to find lots of info on hydraulic and electric assisted turbos with many associated patents. I thought I would include a little bit of what I ve found. Maybe this will pique your interest and you will delve into this subject more deeply. Could be interesting... Hydraulic turbo control Patent for a Hydraulic Assist Turbocharger System - Robert J. Kobayashi Komatsu America recently introduced its PC390LC-10 excavator, which uses hydraulics to control the engine s Variable Geometry Turbocharger, thereby improving engine performance directly. Standard turbochargers use a turbine in the engine s exhaust channel to capture the kinetic energy of exhaust gas and convert it to rotational power. This rotational power is then transmitted through a shaft to a turbofan that pressurizes (charges) air in the engine s intake manifold. A limitation of standard turbochargers is poor low-speed performance. At low engine speeds, exhaust flow is not strong enough to provide sufficient charging of the intake air. However, Komatsu s Variable Geometry Turbocharger uses a hydraulic cylinder to vary the effective area of the exhaust turbine. This causes the turbofan to rotate fast enough to charge the intake air at lower engine speeds. page 6 SFBA Corsa - May 2016
7 More Turbo Ideas From a discussion on Formula 1 racing regarding turbos and proposed rule changes. Taken from viewtopic.php?t=8819&start=75 If the engines are turbocharged, how about putting the electric KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) (or more correctly "TERS" - Thermal Energy Recovery System) MG system onto the turbo spool? Electric assist turbo-compounding systems are already developed and could easily be incorporated. The high speed PM MG's in an electric assist turbo TERS would be much lighter and compact than a drivetrain KERS. That system looks like something designed to avoid waste gates. If you fit a motor generator and a battery to a mid sized turbo you can use the elctric energy at low rpms to get the compression high enough without turbo lag. When the turbo is then producing too much power which you would normally blow off at a waste gate you simply use this power to produce electric energy. Neat system actually if you already have power electronics and storage for other purposes. But I don't think it will replace KERS from the wheels. If you would use traditional electric assisted turbo compounding you would still need an electric motor at the driven wheels. So I don't see it as an alternative to KERS and AWKERS (?). An electric assisted turbo showing the power leads and control module. I have seen some mention of voltages > 500 v with currents of 150+ amps. That s serious power! But then again F1 engines generate upwards of 700 hp I believe... SFBA Corsa - May 2016 page 7
