New members Toni is on the left with Daniel right behind her and Mike is on the right. Buck had to leave a few minutes earlier. The rest of the people I am sure already you know. Buck Jones mentioned he has moved back to Concord from Monterey so he will be able to attend meetings more regularly. His new place has room to work on cars and the neighbors don t mind. That s a rarity these days. I received a sad call a few days ago from Marlene Garrity informing me that Fred passed away last Friday (May 5th). He was at Stonebrook in Concord at the time. Fred has been a member of SFBA Corsa for as long as I can remember. When I first started coming to meetings at the Orinda Library (early 90s), Fred use to bring the donuts. His friend ran Christy s Donuts in Danville so Fred was able to bring some of the unsold donuts to our meetings, this made him very popular. He loved Hudsons as well as Corvairs and Aircoupes (he had one in pieces at his house!). He always had lots of interesting stories to tell. A few years back Fred arranged for SFBA and Valley (see Letter... on page 5) On The Cover: At the Spring Fling inn Suter Creek, Christy Barden to 1st place in the FC Class with his beautiful 61 Rampside. He is also having a Barn Party at his house in Nevada City and is especially inviting Corvair fans. This will be coming up June 4th. See flyer and notes on page 7. The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). The group meets monthly on the first Thursday at 7:00 PM at Black Bear Diner on Sycamore Valley Rd in Danville except for special occasions. Membership costs $25/yr (membership in CORSA, $38/yr, is encouraged). An associate membership (newsletter only) is avialable for $15/yr. Memberships begin on January 1 of each year (first year is prorated). Advertising space in the Spyder Web is available for $50/yr (1/4 page), $75/yr (1/2 page), and $100/yr (full page). Business card size ads are $25/yr but do not include a subscription to the newsletter. All material should be sent to the editor (address above) or ed to CaCalkins@astound.net. Material must be received at least two weeks prior to the next meeting date. USE OF MATERIAL: Written permission from the Editor is required for all original material for any use other than reprinting in a Chartered CORSA Chapter newsletter. 3 Minutes of the Last Meeting May 4, 2017 The meeting was called to order around 8:05 by President Josh Deitcher. As we have become use to, the first hour or so is taken up eating and talking shop. We had eleven members attending tonight and no new guests. We have two new members, Mike & Toni Levis, and Daniel (I didn t catch the last name sorry) from Brentwood. Thanks to Josh this evening we were back in our usual spot in the back room which we had all to ourselves for most of the night. Treasury Report: Paul couldn t make it this evening, but the bank balance stood at $3545. This does not include recent memberships or newsletter expenses (which Clark has not turned in yet). Membership: Harry reported that by his count we now have 30 regular members. Old Business: Josh gave an update on the proposal to recruit new advertisers. This is where the Club is offering a free, 1 year, business card size ad to any advertiser that would like one. He has sent out 15 letters (and plans more) and one response has already been received. Suggestions were offered for mechanics, auto restoration shops, classic car insurance companies, etc. Steve mentioned that he has good luck with his Corvair USB sticks. He has sold 77 so far and when he gets to 100 he can place the order. They shouldn t be long now. New Business: Toni asked if the Club had t-shirts, jackets, decals or some other means Club association. When she went to the Spring Fling in Sutter Creek she didn t know if any other Club members were there as she doesn t know too many by sight. Years ago some Club jackets were made up which a few of us still have. But Josh has had some Club patches and decals made which members can sew on clothes or stick on their cars. These look great and several people picked these up. The cost is $6 for patches and $4 for the decals. Net proceeds go to the Club. Club t-shirts are in the works! Clark just happened to have brought in some left over Corvair 50 th Anniversary magnetic signs the Club had made a few years ago. These are great for events as they just stick to the car and can be removed afterwards. Josh mentioned that the window cards we had printed up several years ago and a great idea but need to be updated as addresses have changed. Tony mentioned that the Club logo was the result of a design contest early on and one member, Don Sharp who was a commercial artist, came up with our current winning design. The idea is to help out a fellow Club member and no to have these parts show up on ebay. An interesting concept! Events: members went to the Capital City Spring Fling in Sutter Creek. Mike & Toni took a first in Early Closed with their beautiful 62 Spyder (see last month s cover). Josh went for a few hours until his 3 year old got antsy. He picked up some wire wheel covers from Seth. Not show quality but just right for his daily driver. Steve and Heather were there and said the turnout was good with many cars. Seth and other vendors were there selling their stuff. The VairFest is coming up. This will again be held in Arroyo Grande (by Pismo Beach) which is a bit of a drive for some of us. This will be June (Friday & Saturday). This year the Raffle features a rebuilt 110 motor. Can be setup for either a manual or automatic trans. 5 Minutes miles. A good deal for those who would like a spare. Raffle tickets are only $5 each and you don t have to be present to win. They haven t sent us any tickets yet, so to order tickets send payment ($5/ticket) to Central Coast CORSA, 7475 Valle Ave., Atascadero, CA Martinez is having a car show every Friday. Off Main St this year on Escobar St at Ferry St. There is a large parking lot on the corner. They always have lots of cars and last year some Corvairs showed up. The Friendship show is coming up. It s at Redwood Shores this year. Buck asked if we had any Tech Sessions planned for this year. We try to hold a couple each year but there is nothing scheduled yet. His new place in Concord has a spot where we could hold one. Even better we would not have to finish in one day so we could tackle larger projects. Plenty of street parking as the neighbors won t mind. We will definitely give this some thought! Our Annual SFBA/Valley Picnic is schedule for August 5 th ay Quarry Lakes Park in Fremont. If anyone knows of conflicts please let us know ASAP. Christy Barden is having a get together (Nevada City Dance Weekend) at his Letter... to have their Corvairs prominently displayed out front of the Blackhawk Museum while we gathered inside for a private tour. He had been in declining health lately fighting off a variety of issues. There will be two ceremonies: 1) 11:30 am Friday, May 26 - A military, grave-side ceremony at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Midway Rd about a mile East of Hwy 80 between Vacaville and Dixon (Midway Rd/ Lewis Rd exit). Military ceremonies are short and prompt. 2) 2:00 pm Saturday, May 27 - Peace Lutheran Church, 3201 Camino place in Nevada City. You might remember Christy is the one who drove his Corvair coast-to-coast a couple of years ago to support Make-A-Wish foundation. After attending one of our meetings in San Leandro he continued on the end his journey in Bodega Bay. Someone mentioned the possibility of having a dial-in days event. Where we would bring our cars and with the help of others get our cars turned up for summer. What a great idea. Swap & Sell: Steve is picking up a late model front end to save it from the land-fill. He won t be needing this so if you are interested, contact him. Tony sent in some pictures of a Corvair for sale. Not sure of location. See Classifieds. Buck, Marc, Steve and others mentioned that maybe the Club could announce that it will help any member that has Corvair cars and or parts that they need to get rid of. Good idea. Maybe make this a standing offer? A place to temporarily store cars/parts has always been an issue. We will talk some more about this at future meetings. Tech: Josh mentioned that he will be replacing the input shaft pilot bushing. Tassajara Rd in Danville (about 1/4 mile West of Blackhawk). Turn North on Old Blackhawk Rd and then right on Mission Dr. to enter the parking lot from the back. Marlene will need help in identifying and disposing of the few cars (Corvair and Hudsons) and parts remaining. I offered my assistance but I may need help so I will be getting to touch with some of you. He uses bread to remove the old bushing (???). Just stuffs in some bread and gets it wet. It pushes the bearing out as it expands. Others use grease or pullers. Josh swears by bread-draulic pressure. After this is replaced the engine is ready to go back in. Marc drove his 65 convertible so we could look at this tail light issue. Turned out to be an issue with the head light switch that left the tail lights on at times. Mike said the American Pi sells SafeGuard. This is a unit that reduces or eliminates pinging. It is capable of monitoring and effecting each cylinder separately (rather than retarding all cylinders which cuts into available horsepower significantly). Fairly expensive at $700 but if it can save our engines, it s worth it. Pinging is very bad for Corvair engines and Mike has seen many pistons with large holes in the tops, the result of pinging. Daniel s 63 Spyder is all done mechanically. Ready for paint. He will take it to East bay Customs in Brentwood. Meeting adjourned about 9:00 PM. Silicon Valley was represented by Ken Lawyer who took first in Early Open with his very nice 64 Spyder and Hal Rupert who took 2 nd in FC Class with his 63 Rampside. 6 Corvair USB Drives - Steve Heater In Memorial Steve is selling these great looking Corvair USB drives. Modeled after his 65 Coupe. They look pretty neat.he went through a few iterations to get the colors and styles just right. They are made of molded rubber and come in sizes 4, 16, or 64 GB. And they come in any of the stock 15 colors! Prices range from $15 to $45. Certainly reasonable and includes shipping. Steve places his orders in blocks of 100 devices so there may be some minor delay in delivery. He has setup this web site for taking orders. The address is ClassicCarUSB.com. 7 Car Talk - Tony Richards This month marks the fourteenth anniversary of my 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora.I took delivery of it in 2003 from Pearson Olds in Sunnyvale.There is a small sticker under the hood that reads: "Date of Birth: March 11, 2003". The reason I bought this car is that it is a "Final 500" Oldsmobile, being number 368 of the last 500 Auroras built. The last day of Aurora production was March 28, 2003.I have driven it an average of 600/miles per month. It now has 99,400 miles on it and will soon roll over 100. What is interesting is that for the first seven years of owning this car, I seldom drove it. It sat around in the garage. The battery would go dead when it was not driven regularly.in September of 2010, it still only had 11,000 miles on it but at that point it became my regular driver.it's Northstar engine still runs great and does not burn any oil. But I cannot drive this car around forever. I plan on eventually finding something else to drive around and just keeping this car in the garage, because of what it is. But what do I do when it comes time to retire this car? General Motors does not produce a car that I would want to buy. Nor does anyone else. Clark, Thank you for the current newsletter "Spyder Web". Other winners were Vance Piper with 2 nd in Early Closed with his 62 Monza, Tito Garret took home 1 st in Late Open and Christy Barden took 1 st in FC Class with his outstanding 61 Rampside. Best of Show went to Paul & Linda Bender for their low mileage 65 Monza Coupe. This was an excellent show with lots of cars, vendors, and visitors in a wonderful location. His tail lights would stay on. Trouble turned out to be with the headlight switch. Problem solved! Our next meeting will be Thursday, June 1 st at Black Bear Diner in Danville. The meeting will start around 7:00 PM. I will get there early so we can grab a table in the back room where it is quieter and we can take our time. Let s have a good turnout!
