2 Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our last meeting. Attendance was quite good at eleven members (counting wives). This month we were meeting at Harry s in the front section. Much quieter than the back section, however with the Warriors/Cavs game going on so there were sporadic bursts of cheers. A bit distracting but, overall, not bad. I was a bit surprised that we had such a good attendance this evening. I thought with the NBA Finals just starting that some people would choose to stay home and watch the game. Not so apparently and with the traffic being on the light side, most everyone got there early to boot. Harry s had the section reserved in our name and we had plenty of room to spread out. Maybe too much room as Fred, who sat on the end, and had a hard time hearing. Next time we will see about rearranging the tables a bit. As typical the evening started off by discussing various car related topics over dinner. Harry s was rather busy and it took some time to get dinner (not to mention finding a place to park). On an interesting note Walt was saying how his 64 actually handled better than early 65s did (I always thought the all late models handled better than the earlies). Seth went into details regarding changes Chevy made to the rear suspension and how early 65s would develop toe-in on the rear wheels in hard cornering. Pivot points were changed in the suspension of late 65s and later cars to avoid this situation. As enjoyable as the conversation was, the formal meeting did have to get started. Tony called it to order around 8:00. Our Annual SFBA/Valley Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, August 8th at Quarry Lakes Park in Fremont. There will be details and a map in the next newsletter. This is always a well-attended, fun event. Don t miss it! On The Cover: Ted Brown produces a bolt-on electronic fuel injection (EFI) kit for the Corvair. Available through Clark s. This utilizes two GM electronic carburetors and the kit contains everything you need except a fuel pump and air intake filters. For these you have some choices. This won t make a bad engine run well, rather it makes a good engine run great! The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). The group meets monthly on the first Thursday at 7:00 PM at Denny s in Danville except for special occasions. Membership costs $25/yr (membership in CORSA, $38/yr, is encouraged). An associate membership (newsletter only) is avialable for $15/yr. Memberships begin on January 1 of each year (first year is prorated until September). Advertising space in the Spyder Web is available for $50/yr (1/4 page), $75/yr (1/2 page), and $100/yr (full page). Business card size ads are $25/yr but do not include a subscription to the newsletter. All material should be sent to the editor (address above) or ed to CorsaNews@Bigfoot.com. Material must be received at least two weeks prior to the next meeting date. 3 Minutes of the Last Meeting June 4, 2015 The meeting was officially called to order around 8:05 PM by President Tony Richards. This evening we had eleven members and no guests. Treasurers Report: Fred indicated the bank balance was unchanged from the prior month (where the balance stood at $ ). Membership: Harry reported that our membership was around 23. No new members. A while back he made up a letter intended for all northern California Corsa member to introduce SFBA in the hope that some will see the value of joining even if only to receive the newsletter. Seth will try to obtain a membership list from Corsa and then harry will send these out. We could certainly use more, younger members. A couple of months back Pat from San Ramon came to our meeting at Round Table Pizza in Dublin. Harry will send him Club info and see if he cares to join. if you are showing your car. Thanks! New business: Our Annual SFBA/Valley Picnic is scheduled for August 8th at Quarry Lakes Park in Fremont. Seth says that Fremont is having algae problems with the lakes and is not permitting dogs to go in the water. Clark will publish an update in the August Spyder Web so people know what to expect. SFBA will provide burgers and dogs and Valley will bring tri-tip. Members are asked to bring a side dish to share (salads, desserts, chips, etc.). Mark your calendar. This should be fun! We are planning for a Tech Session in the Fall. No location or date has been specified. Anybody need work done on (or questions of) their Corvair? Anyone have ideas for a theme this time? Events: Walt reported that Alameda has a car show every year. Lots of cars are entered but they charge a fair amount ($50) to show your car. Also a trucking company on Clement St.in Alameda has a bunch of old cars. Usually open Saturdays no particular schedule. Seth will be going to the Convention the end of June in Knoxville, TN. Tech: Seth s new distributor is selling ok (he will take a half dozen to Knoxville). This is sold by Clark s and California Corvairs as well as directly from him. Has internal electronics and has either a stock looking cap or EFI cap. Slightly larger than stock (3/8 larger diameter) but still offers sufficient clearance for rotation. Ironically it won t fit on Seth s own 65 Monza, 110 with A/ C. Condenser gets in the way. A turbo version is being worked on (unable to find a supplier for a pressure retard unit still looking). System will require a full 12v supply (no resistance wire). Walt reported that he has a Motorcraft center-mount carburetor (from a V-6) on his engine but is going back to a Rochester carb. Seth mentioned a Ted Brown fuel in- Old Business: Walt mentioned that he sees Corvairs around Alameda and if he had Club info he would hand it out. A few years back Bill Sweet had made up placards just for this purpose. One side for Valley and the other for SFBA. This is published in the Spyder Web as space permits. But the addressed need to be updated. Clark will do this. Clark reported that the old Denny s in Danville is being converted into a Black Bear Diner. Not certain if the layout will change or not. We will keep tabs on this as it s a fairly central location. Some time ago Dave Newell had made up some Anniversary Coins to celebrate the Corvair s 50th year. Valley had some magnetic blown-up images produced that can be attached to your car for showing. After Bill died, his family was going through his stuff and came across a box of extra magnetic images and gave them to Seth. He handed them out to anyone interested. 5 Dave Newell s Corvair Sign Restoration AAs many of you know by now (at least those that have attended our meetings lately), Dave Newell obtained an old Corvair neon sign that was originally from a dealership that was closing. This sign spent some years with Mell in San Jose before Dave obtained it. By the time he got it home some tubes were broken and the sign was in general disrepair. It would need a complete restoration. He found an outfit that could fix the neon tubes and he was able to do the rest. One of the choices he had to make was what color for the letters and the back lighting. As you can see (below) he chose red backlighting with bright yellow for the letters. It turned out great, don t you think? This is a rather big sign and it took three (or more?) people to put it up. Besides Dave and Tony, there is someone else in the background who can barely be seen. I don t know who is taking the pictures. Just below the sign are two Corvair engines. On the left is a cut-away late model Turbo engine that s been nicely detailed. The other, I believe, is a GM experimental engine. Webber carburetors with unique valve covers. You can probably find this engine mentioned in one of the books. Great job Dave and the others who helped. I can t wait until our Club gets a chance to visit the Corvair West museum! Here Dave is getting the area ready for the sign being held by Tony and? Check out the literature collection along the wall! The sign is up and is being secured. This will surely light up the room. With the signed mounted, plugged in and turned on, it makes the area look great. With the room lights turned off, it s a very impressive sign. SFBA Corsa - July 2015 page 5

This uses two GM electronic carburetors (one on each side) and kit contains everything you need (comes with Seth s wires). You will get a better running, more reliable, and more economical engine. More info at ( Swap & Sell: Clark picked up some Corvair Shop Manuals at an Antique store in Pismo Beach. Thought people would be interested. $10 each. Most were grabbed right away but there is still a Corvair 95 manual available. Seth reported that the Corsa tech Guide now comes on a DVD (.PDF file). This makes it easy to print out a few pages and take them into the garage for working on your car. When you are done, just toss the now dirty pages. You can always print more. Seth also has quick disconnect steering wheels. Essential for race cars but can be used as a theft deterrent for street cars. It s difficult to steal a car without a steering wheel! The down side is that if you don t take the wheel off, it can be taken very easily! Seth reported on two Corvairs for sale. One in Moraga (been garaged there since 1982) is a real project car. A 65 Corsa cvrt originally with a 140 engine, now has a 180 sans carburetor (but it may be somewhere in the garage). Under $2000. Other car is a 68 Monza cvrt, 140 PG in Santa Clara. Need paint real bad. Custom interior also needs replacing. Asking $2500. Contact Seth regarding either of these. The meeting broke up around 8:45 PM. 7 Update On Rob Massari s 64 Spyder Rob sent in these pictures of his 64 Spyder showing how the body repair work is going. As you may know he got read-ended a while back. From the looks of the photos, he is making great progress. Can t wait to see it get painted. Wouldn t this make a fine Tech Session topic? The delicate 700 seat fabric on the bottom cushion of the driver's seat isn't torn, which it surely would be if the mileage was A couple pics are attached. The Vairs in the wrecking yard have been there for over 30 years and many aren't easily accessible but Charles said that the coupes and sedan plus both vans can be gotten to easily.
