2 Over 100 years ago, L. H. d and the other partners hired Charlie d to manage a range outfit that became d Ranches. Forty-nine years ago, Paul d took the reins. Three years ago, our daughter, Jennifer d Westfall, began managing the cows that produce the bulls for our annual sale. An essential tool for finding superior sires and producing better bulls is using AI (artificial insemination). With AI, we have access to the very best bulls. Since 1956, we have been raising AI sired bulls and adding AI sired heifers to our cow herd. Artificial Insemination has been an important part of our ranch life for 61 years. AI is what we do, for 45 days each year we lived it from 5AM until Sundown. Those 61 years of adding the best sires to range savvy cows, has built a genetically superior cow herd. The bulls in this sale are the results of over a hundred years of selection for more productive, self-reliant cattle. We have used and will continue to use every practical tool to increase the profitability of your cow herd. The sires of these sale bulls are low birth weight, high yearling weight, low PAP, low maintenance fertile cows, with superior carcass, added profitability. The following information was provided by Dr. Tim Holt, the leading authority on Brisket Disease - Dr. Holt has been testing our bulls for many years The following categories are offered to better help in PAP evaluation and utilization of bulls in altitude. LOW RISK BULLS: PAP scores 41 and under Bulls in this category are thought to be able to go to any elevation without the effects of altitude to themselves or their offspring MODERATE RISK BULLS: PAP scores Bulls in this category are best used below 7000 feet and their offspring should be PAP tested prior to use in high elevation as bull breeding stock or replacement heifers HIGH RISK BULLS: PAP scores greater than 47 Bulls in this category should always be considered at risk for use in elevations greater than 5000 feet. If they are used in high elevations they should be monitored as well as their offspring for the effects of altitude. Many bulls in this category will do well in elevations but represent those animals at higher risk and should be used with caution in elevations that exceed the 5000 feet level. 5

6 The IGENITY : IGENITY provides the beef industry with the most comprehensive genetic profile of multiple traits of economic importance. The insights gained from an IGENITY profile help producers make more confident selection, management and marketing decisions. The IGENITY profile includes multiple-marker analyses for traits such as: Average Daily Gain, Tenderness, Choice, Stayability, Maternal Calving Ease and Feed Efficiency. Score Advantages: To assist cattle producers in understanding the value of technology, IGENITY has developed a scoring system for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Higher values are not necessarily better, they simply indicate that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. The following descriptions and table (Table 1) are useful in defining each trait and reflect the relative difference expected in animals compared to contemporaries with an IGENITY profile score of 1. Average Daily Gain: Higher scores for Average Daily Gain indicate greater genetic potential for faster post-weaning gain. An animal with a score of 10 has the potential to gain 0.81 pounds per day more than an animal with a score of 1. Therefore, if an animal with a score of 1 gained 3.0 pounds per day, we would expect an animal with a score of 10 to gain 3.81 pounds per day (assuming they are in the same contemporary group). Tenderness: The analysis in the IGENITY profile for tenderness represents an animal s genetic potential for tenderness as measured by Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WB SF), with 10 being the most tender and 1 being the least tender. Lower shear force means more tender beef. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for tenderness, 2.3 pounds less shear force is required than an animal with a score from IGENITY of 1. Choice The IGENITY profile scores for Quality Grade and Marbling reflect extremely powerful multiple marker analyses which are indicative of an animal s potential for intramuscular fat deposition and Choice or better Quality Grade carcasses. Choice shows an Indication of an animal s ability to grade and marble. Stayability: The analysis for stayability from the IGENITY profile represents a female s ability to remain in the herd until six years of age or beyond. In a group of heifers with a score of 10 from IGENITY, 23.19% more of them are expected to stay in the herd until six years of age than a group of heifers with a score of 1. Maternal Calving Ease: Higher scores from the IGENITY profile for calving ease mean a higher percentage of unassisted births in first-calf females. A score of 10 from the IGENITY profile represents 12.93% more unassisted births than a score from IGENITY of 1. Feed Efficiency The IGENITY Feed Efficiency analysis predicts genetic potential for Residual Feed Intake (RFI). RFI describes an animal s feed intake above or below its predicted needs for maintenance and growth. An animal with a low RFI score will: - Eat less to achieve the same gains, - Gain more on the same amount of feed, - Require less feed to maintain body condition as a mature adult. The results of Feed Efficiency combined with Average Daily Gain give you a powerful look at an animal s ability to grow efficiently, maintain body condition as a mature animal and have efficient offspring. How to use the IGENITY IGENITY scores are easy to incorporate into your selection criteria. They represent an additional tool when combined with s, ultrasound and visual appraisal. As the case with any selection method, single trait selection should be avoided. Select those animals that best combine the traits you desire to emphasize in your herd. Most producers first determine which traits are the most important to their selection goals and then set minimum and/or maximum acceptable IGENITY scores for those traits. 6

Average Daily Gain A measure of the bull s gain performance while, on test. n o p q r s t Adjusted Weight Ratio Computed by adding the 205 day adjusted weight to the gain since weaning. It combines weaning and gain to give a complete picture of the bull s growth. Note: Adj. Wt. is the best performance measure of the bull. Frame Score Adjusted for age to help predict mature size. Scrotal Circumference Adjusted to yearling age, in cm. Large scrotal circumference indicates greater service capacity, daughters will tend to be more fertile and productive cows. Use scrotal circumference to improve total herd fertility. Pulmonary Artery Pressure Used to help avoid, Brisket Disease. Scores of 42 and less are recommended for ranches above 7,000 ft. Ranches lower than 7,000 ft. have little risk of, Brisket, or, High Mountain Disease. Base Each breed association has their own base that they choose to use. To assist our customers in comparing bulls against each other we have adjusted each animal in this catalog to the Angus base (RA). Special Information Scores 7

He was born in Bluff to Lemuel H. d, Jr. in a log cabin with a dirt roof and a dirt floor. A biography from the Charles d Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University states, His education in the school of hard knocks was complemented by formal training in a one-room school. In that environment he soon showed himself to be a natural-born leader. On completion of his training in the lower grades, Charlie s parents decided to send him over 300 miles away to Provo to Brigham Young Academy, where he enrolled in high school. He was known as a leader and a pusher, participating in every activity from school plays to baseball. And in the meantime he was learning the routines of ranching in San Juan. After serving a Northwestern States Mission for the LDS Church, in 1914 he became manager of the La Sal Livestock Company, which later was known as d Ranches. Mr. d has won wide recognition for his application of scientific knowledge to livestock breeding and range improvement. He insisted that his livestock be more productive and efficient and well adapted to the often dry and rough ranges in Southeastern Utah. Through extensive brush eradication and grass planting, Mr. d increased the capacity 10 times of some of his rangeland. In 1946, the Record Stockman Magazine selected him as Man of the Year in Livestock. Charles d served as Trustee of Utah State University as Chairman of the Utah Water and Power Board and in the Utah State Legislature. He was director of the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Utah Historical Heritage Foundation, Utah Power and Light and Amalgamated Sugar. He was awarded the Honorary Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his long years of business and social contact in the interest of fostering Anglo-American friendship. Charles d married Annaley Naegle in 1931 and they were the parents of nine children. He passed away in d helped establish the Charles d Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University, which is the academic home of the Lemuel H. d Chair in Western History. 26
