3 HAPPY EASTER Editor s Workbench Hello fellow modelers and dear friends. Once again welcome to another edition of Mold Lines. This month we bring you a subject that I am not very fond of, yes cars. The reason is because I cannot paint glossy finishes, and it seems like Annette (according to herself) can t either and yet she managed to complete an astonishing Lamborghini in 1/12 to boot! She went far beyond by improving the lighting and adding a bunch of extra detail. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. We also bring you the second part of our Scale Modeling Jigs article where we see some ingenious solutions to very unique scale modeling problems. Next month we have our annual model display exhibit at the Joel Valdez branch of the Pima County Library in downtown Tucson. Every year our exhibit has a theme and this year is no exception. As a matter of fact we have two themes, The Vietnam War and Exploration. The exhibit will be up for most of the month of May (Exact dates in next Issue) in the library s main display areas right as you enter. Come an enjoy the work of our fellow club members.

CLUB NEWS RECENT EVENTS Make and Take at the Pima Air and Space Museum - This event is designed to

accurate scale models. It will be held on May 6 th, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

This past month we had a great meeting with an almost full venue with 35 club member attending.

4 CLUB NEWS RECENT EVENTS Make and Take at the Pima Air and Space Museum - This event is designed to introduce children to the hobby of model building and the math and historical research used to build accurate scale models. It will be held on May 6 th, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Monthly Club Meeting The SDMB held their monthly meeting on March 2 nd, 2017 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This past month we had a great meeting with an almost full venue with 35 club member attending. Our friend (and most distant sdmb member) Seiji Watanabe joined us all the way from Japan. It was nice to see you Seiji. There was a large number or amazing model on display, everything from large planes to fast cars. The kind of thing that makes you want to build! Lamborghini Countach By: Annette Sostarich Sometime in the 80's, the hobby shop I frequented had a large scale Otaki 1/12 Lamborghini Countach kit sitting in it's front window. It sat. And sat.

6 Lamborghini Countach By: Annette Sostarich Sometime in the 80's, the hobby shop I frequented had a large scale Otaki 1/12 Lamborghini Countach kit sitting in it's front window. It sat. And sat. And SAT! It sat so long the box front was all sunfaded. It was a return, so they were offering it for half price - which at the time, was around $40 or so. That was a lot of money for a model in those days, but the principle of all good advertising (put it in front of the customer often 6

chew. I finally bought it when I saw the insane amount of detail the kit had. After getting it home, it sat. And sat. And SAT!

Someone had started it, but they only got as far as assembling the engine block before deciding, apparently, that they'd bit off more than they could chew. Part of the problem was I didn't know what color I wanted to paint it (And I hate working with gloss paint...). Fast forward to At Modelzona, my husband Tony saw a beautiful Team Lotus Type 49 Indy car in 1/12, and had to have it. 7

8 Lamborghini Countach We said to ourselves, "Here's a great chance to build cars together; I'll build the Lambo and you build the Indy car. After getting the usual collection of nickel-and-dime projects off my workbench - It gets used for lots of things besides modeling - I started on the Lambo. I kept waiting for Tony to start the Lotus, but he never did. I kept building the Lambo. I found out (I think) why the previous builder quit. The spark plug wires that came with the kit were too big to go through the separators after getting paint. I fixed that by making spark plug wires out of (wait for it!) WIRE. I still had to make some separators instead of using kit parts, but other than that, the kit was incredibly well engineered. The suspension, steering, doors, trunk, hood, and retractable headlights all work! It came with a lighting kit, which I upgraded with LEDs. The only major glitch was the windshield, which had no positioning ledge... at all. Making it fit - and stay put - took several hours of delicate massaging. 8

I got past my lack of gloss-paint skill by using Tamiya spray lacquer, which polishes very nicely.

I also put some wire mesh in the engine lid vents and lenses on the instruments. I got past my lack of gloss-paint skill by using Tamiya spray lacquer, which polishes very nicely. I was determined not to have an "orange peel" paint finish, and for the most part I succeeded, though it took many coats and much polishing. I only broke three parts off while fitting the body on the chassis - the most teeth-gnashing step in every car model I've built. 9

10 Scale Modeling Jigs Many unique crafts often require specialized tools for performing the needed work. Often when no suitable tool exists the craftsman has to use ingenuity and skill to create a tool that meets his exact needs. These customized tools are referred to as jigs. Scale Modeling is no different from any other craft and because the work we do as modelers is often unique the tools we use are many time unique as well. This month we bring you part two of this interesting subject and take a look at more jigs. This meant I had to scratch build one. I based the design on a European style and drew (pencil on paper, the old fashioned way!) the shape in profile, determining the size "by eye" and comparing it to the figure. The design was transferred to sheet styrene, cut in half, and repeated 8 times. 10

LEGO Jigs Legos was one of the products many of our club members said they use to make assembly jigs. The reason for this is because Legos have to be interchangeable they have very tight tolerances and this means the make very nice right angles and straight lines when assembled. They are a great way to keep aircraft wings and tails straight while assembling aircraft. 11
