3 3 Editor Workbench Hello Fellow modelers and dear friends, This year is gone! I hope everybody s Holidays were good and you were able to spend time with your family and friends and of course get some modeling time was quite a year with many of us taking on scale modeling resolutions like Dick Smith s resolution to finish every model he had started. I don t know the exact count but he did manage to complete quite a few. I tried, but I only managed to finish one Shelf Queen along with two additional figures. Oh well I have a feeling 2017 will be a better year. In this, the last issue of the year we Mike Bilcik shares with us his XYF Pogo build. We also talk about a subject that you either love it, or you despise it. Yup, decals. I myself had a love / hate relationship with using decals as I could never seem to get satisfactory results especially with large decals. It took me about 15 years of trial and error to be able to get consistent good results with them. So we will go over the method that eventually worked for me. Additionally we show you the wonderful work that our club members create month after month. Until next time!

Going Vertical The Convair XFY-Pogo Kit build review by Mike Bilcik The Convair XFY Pogo tail-sitter was an experiment in vertical takeoff and landing.

It was intended to be a highperformance fighter aircraft capable of operating from small warships.

8 Going Vertical The Convair XFY-Pogo Kit build review by Mike Bilcik The Convair XFY Pogo tail-sitter was an experiment in vertical takeoff and landing. The Pogo had delta wigs and three-bladed contra-rotating propellers powered by a 5,500 hp (4,100 kw) Allison YT40-A-6 turboprop engine. It was intended to be a highperformance fighter aircraft capable of operating from small warships. Landing the XFY-1 was difficult, as the pilot had to look over his shoulder while carefully working the throttle to land. Manufacturer: KP (Kovozavody Prostejov or Kit Pro) Scale: 1/72 The reason I chose to build this model is because I enjoy building esoteric, off beat subjects. This model fits that genre. The kit maker KP is an old time Czech model kit manufacturer dating back to the early days of plastic model kits. It pre-dates other Czech manufacturers such as relative new comers like Special Hobby, Eduard and Aires. During the Cold War it was often the only source for Iron Curtain subjects. Lately, it has run into financial issues but is making a slow comeback. 8

My first thought was that the Matchbox trench digger had moved to Czechoslovakia. When I started building the kit, the first decision I made was to ignore the panel lines and press on with the build.

9 Convair XFY-Pogo I couldn't find an issue date for the XFY-1 kit, but I estimate it to be about 15 years ago. Upon taking it out of the side opening box, the first thing I noticed were the overdone deep and wide engraved panel lines. My first thought was that the Matchbox trench digger had moved to Czechoslovakia. When I started building the kit, the first decision I made was to ignore the panel lines and press on with the build. The molding was very good with no flash evident and little clean up of the parts was required. The windscreen and canopy were molded as separate pieces and were thin and clear. The first order of construction was the cockpit as is the case with most aircraft kits. The instrument panel had raised detail which made it easy to dry brush in order to pick out the features. I then picked out individual instruments with gloss lacquer. The seat consisted of four parts which make a fair representation. I added etched brass belts which I had on hand. I then trapped the cockpit between the fuselage halves. As with all the seams on this build, I spent a lot of time and effort ensuring the seams were perfect because I knew it was to be a metal finish. 9

10 Convair XFY-Pogo Metal finishes require a very smooth surface. To attain a smooth surface requires going over corrections time after time. If you say to yourself a seam or a filling are "good enough", then enter the model in a contest, I can promise you a judge will find your "good enough" and your model will be eliminated from contention. I can only encourage you to go beyond good enough in order to attain a finish where no imperfections will show under metal paint. I painted this model with Model Master paints. I use enamel paints mostly. I have never embraced acrylics because enamels are what I started with before acrylics were invented. After joining the wings and the vertical and bottom stabilizers which fit with a minimum of fuss, it was time to paint. My research showed some painted surfaces on the wings which I painted light gray. After drying overnight, I then masked the painted area and painted the rest of the model with Model Master Metalizer Lacquer Aluminum Plate. This is a buffing metalizer which I did not buff. My prep work paid off as I had no areas to correct because they showed under metallic paint. After drying overnight, I sprayed the entire model with Model Master Flat Lacquer. It was now time for decals. I found that the national markings that came with the kit were way too large 10

The decals laid down well and didn't pose any problems. I then assembled the propellers which came with six individual blades, three of which attached to two housings. The propellers are cast very delicately, so much care to prevent breakage during assembly and painting is required. I painted them, as well as the large hub with Testors black enamel. After drying, I sprayed them with a coat of flat lacquer. 11

12 Convair XFY-Pogo I finished the model by adding the windscreen and canopy as well as the landing gear and the propeller assembly. All in all, an enjoyable build. The parts fit was good and painting went well after sufficient surface prep work. Recommended. 12

In this article I will show you the method I use for applying decals that is simple and usually yields good results. 1. Decals don t work very well on rough surfaces.

13 December 2016 Tips and Tricks WATERSLIDE TRANSFERS (DECALS) by: Dave Diaz Waterslide transfers, more commonly known as decals are one of those parts of model building that you either love or you despise. While decals can add incredible detail to a model, it can be quite a frustrating endeavor since it is very hard to get good results while using them. In this article I will show you the method I use for applying decals that is simple and usually yields good results. 1. Decals don t work very well on rough surfaces. This is because a rough surface allows for air to get trapped between the decal and the surface creating that nasty effect we call Silvering. The first step is to cover the area where the decal will go with a coat of gloss varnish. I typically use Future floor polish, but gloss from Tamiya 1. or Testors work well also. The gloss will fill tiny irregularities on the surface creating a uniform surface that will allow the decal to slide better while reducing the amount of air that can get trapped. 13

You want to get rid of this excess and it can show when the decal is applied ruining the end result. Take your time with this. You don t need to cut all the way through, just enough to cut to the clear decal film. Tips and Tricks Place the decal on a shallow dish with luke warm water. Check it with a brush every few minutes, the decal is ready when it can move slightly on the decal paper. 3. Using warm water to activate your decal will work faster and help prevent cracking decals.
