2 Mold Lines is the official publication of the Sonoran Desert Model Builders Modeling club. We publish it on a monthly basis and it is your source for Club news, interviews, model reviews, photos or our member s modeling work as well as articles on modeling techniques and other articles of interest to our members. The Sonoran Desert Model Builders is a chartered IPMS model club in Tucson, Arizona dedicated to advancing each others skills through tip sharing, encouragement and, most importantly, hands-on building. 3 3 Editor Workbench Hello Fellow modelers and dear friends, 2017, the year of the Traveling Boulder. Now what are you talking about Dave? For those who know (if you don t, go to our club s webpage and read March 2015 newsletter) the ancient Scale Modeling Zodiac governs what kind of modeler you end up being depending on what year you were born. Last year was the Year of the Shelf Queen, and this year is the Year of the Traveling Boulder. Now I was not born under this sign but the one thing I constantly struggle with is the construction phase of a model. My favorite parts are painting and weathering so building always requires a bit of effort for me. What about you? Where you born under this sign? This past month we had our yearly model swap meet and contest Model Mania / Scorpfest IV. We had modelers attend from all over Arizona, from California, New Mexico, Texas and even from Hermosillo, Mexico. It was nice to see many old friends and plenty of new faces. I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to everyone who donated their time to make the event possible, to all the judges, the guys at the registration table, to Derek for hosting our event, and of course to Chuck for the awesome awards. Until next time! Model on! The Year of the Traveling Boulder In an ancient legend, a monk set out in a journey to attend a Nationals contest in a faraway land. At one point in the journey he found the road blocked by a huge boulder. He took another road and found another boulder and so on. Eventually he began to notice that every boulder he came across was identical Modelers born under this sign struggle with issues that come up again and again in every build leading to long strings of uncompleted projects. They get along with modelers born under the Shelf Queen sign.

4 RECENT EVENTS CLUB NEWS Sonoran Desert Model Builder monthly meeting - The monthly meeting for the club was held on January 5th, We had a wonderful time with many great models on display. Doug Smith s awesome 1/350 th scale Tirpitz was voted as SDMB Model of the year as it our end of the year tradition. We bring you more details on Doug s ship later in this edition. 6 6 UPCOMING EVENTS CLUB NEWS SDMB Monthly Meeting Our club s next meeting will be held on March 2nd, 2017 from 6:30 8:30. It will be held at our regular meeting location. (See Page 2 for details). Make and Take at the Pima Air and Space Museum - This event is designed to introduce children to the hobby of model building and the math and historical research used to build accurate scale models. The event will take place February 4 th, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Don t forget to support our monthly raffle - Every month we give away one item from our raffle stash for every 10 tickets. Tickets are only $1.00! Joel Valdez branch of the Pima County Library During the month of May the Sonoran Desert Model builders will be holding their yearly scale model exhibition at the Downtown Tucson Pima County Library branch. The exhibit will run throughout the month of May. This year we will hold two themes, The Vietnam War and Exploration.

7 SDMB Model of the Year Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz By: Doug Smith The Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz kit is a very nice kit. With a single piece hull and something around 700 parts, it goes together with no issues. Construction was aided by several after market kits. The original 38 cm, the 15.5 cm and the dual purpose 10 cm guns were replaced by turned brass gun barrels. These look much better that the gun barrels included in the kit. The one drawback was since they were made for a different 1/350 Tripitz kit (the Revell kit) they didn t quite fit so some drilling had to be done to make them fit. The original kit had anchor chains molded in the deck. I filed those off and used after market chains to attach the anchors. I drilled holes in the deck to feed the chains into the chain lockers. I have 7

8 Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz never had any luck getting painted decks to look right so I opted for a self-adhesive aftermarket set. This makes it look much better. I also used an aftermarket set of brass propellers and three different photoetched sets. There is probably around 1000 photoetched parts around the ship. I spend a considerable amount of time during this build researching the Tripitz. I gathered several good books with wealth of information and many good photographs. Good photos of the Tirpitz are hard to find. She is not as famous as her sister ship (DKM Bismark). 8

9 Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz I chose to paint the ship in a late 1943 early 1944 Norwegian Camouflage scheme. This is a very complicated paint scheme and proved difficult. Interesting note is that the Port side and Starboard side use different colors. I could find no explanation as to why, but all references show it to be historically accurate. I used a variety of photos (including a couple of rare color photos) plus descriptions of the colors in a survivors book to choose the colors. The floatplanes were a challenge by themselves. The fuselage/wing assembly included in the kit was very good, but the floats were terrible. So I purchased an aftermarket set of floatplanes. Trumpeter has a nice 1/350 set of the exact planes used on Kriegsmarine ship during WWII which includes enough part for 6 planes. 9

10 Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz I assembled two sets of floats from the Trumpeter parts and attached them to the Tamiya fuselage/wing assembly. Then I painted the planes. The parts in the Trumpeter kit were clear plastic. So I cut and filed the cockpit off of the planes from the Tamiya kit and put the Trumpeter clear cockpits on the Tamiya fuselage/wing assembly. I masked and painted the cockpits before attaching them. The Trumpeter kit even came with the correct decals for the Tirpitz aircraft (and all other large Kriegsmarine ships). 9

11 Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz I decided to depict three flags on the main mast of the ship. The center flag is the standard Kriegsmarine flag. I really like the German Imperial Battle Flag and I wanted to display it but I wasn t sure if Kriegsmarine ships ever flew it during World War II. While digging into my research material I found that every year, on the anniversary of the Battle of Jutland (May 31 - June 1) all Kriegsmarine surface ships would fly the Imperial Battle Flag in celebration, so I decided to include it. The flag in on the Starboard side. The third flag was also an idea that came about while doing my research. In a book written by a former ship crew member it told the story of Fleet Admiral Otto Ciliax. He was in charge of all surface naval forces in the Norwegian theatre of operations 10

12 Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz and would often hold celebration dinners on board the Tripitz for all his senior officers. So I decide to add a Fleet Admiral s flag indicating a Fleet Admiral is aboard. In the end this model was a lot of fun to build. While it was a very challenging kit after over 100 hours of work I think it turned out quite well. If I had to do it all over again there wouldn t be much I d do differently. I am very happy with the end result. Doug 11

13 January 2016 Tips and Tricks by: Dave Diaz This month we bring you a couple of tips on what to do with some leftover holiday items. 1. A bad light amongst one of you light strings on your tree? We have all been there. Now don t get rid of those old blown light bulbs. You can use a cutting disk to cut them and simulate bottles. These would work for 1/24 & 1/25 scale wine size bottles. You can also make broken bottles with them.make sure to wear eye protection. 2. Do you have some extra Christmas miniature village trees. The work very well in winter dioramas. You can even add extra snow on them if you wish. 12

14 On Saturday January 14 th modelers from all Arizona, neighboring states and even neighboring countries got together to enjoy our yearly Scale Model swap Meet and Model Show, Model Mania / Scorpfest. This was the fourth year for our Model Show and like previous years it was a great event full of wonderful looking models and great camaraderie between modelers. This year the contest feature 12 categories ranging from Automotive to Scratchbuilts and the best looking awards from any of the previous events. 15 SCORPFEST IV From the moment the registration table opened at 9:00 AM the stream of entries was never ending. We had modelers from al over Arizona as well as from California, New Mexico, Texas and even some international visitors from Hermosillo, Mexico. The table eventually got filled to the point when we were struggling for space with every new entry. Overall we had 112 entries and at least a dozen models for display only. The available space is quickly taken by the entries 14
