2 Applications & Notes This product is compatible with canister style oil filters with the following thread sizes: 3/4-16 UNF 13/16-16 UN M20 x 1.50 M22 x 1.50 Factory water-to-oil coolers should be removed before installing this product. An adapter plate is required for use with a cartridge style oil filters. The sandwich plate is re-buildable. This product is not recommended for use with corrosive fluids. 4 Thermostat Operation 1. The thermostat bypasses the oil cooler until the oil temperature reaches 180 ºF (T4) or 212 ºF (T7) as shown in Figure 2. Roughly 90% of the oil will flow through the bypass which offers less resistance to flow than the cooler. This prevents cold oil in the cooler from shocking the system and eliminates air pockets. At the rated temperature, the bypass valve begins to close, forcing oil through the cooler, as illustrated in Figure 3. This allows the oil to reach minimum operating temperatures faster and prevents temperatures from dropping below the rated temperature under most operating conditions. Should the thermostat fail, oil circulation will not be blocked. Installation Instructions WARNING: DO NOT CAP OFF THE OIL COOLER PORTS after the adapter is installed. Running the engine with the ports capped will block oil flow and result in catastrophic engine damage. If not using an oil cooler, the IN/OUT ports must be looped together to prevent engine damage. WARNING: This product should only be installed by a qualified mechanic. Improper installation could result in severe engine damage. 4

5 Preparing for Installation 1. Open the hood and/or raise the vehicle to access the oil filter. Support the vehicle with certified automotive jack stands, power lift, or wheel ramps. WARNING: NEVER work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. 2. Remove any covers or panels necessary to access the oil pan and filter. 3. Place a drain pan under the filter and remove the oil filter. Caution: Oil may be hot! 4. Secure the oil cooler to the vehicle. Tip: Ensure the oil cooler is isolated from vibration. Tip: Pre-fill the cooler with oil to prevent a dry startup. 5. Measure and assemble the oil system lines. Leave the lines disconnected from the sandwich plate. Installing the Oil Cooler Adapter Sandwich Plate 1. Install the -AN adapter fittings into the sandwich plate. Tip: Lubricate the -AN fitting O-rings with engine oil to prevent O-ring damage. Tip: Use aluminum -AN fitting wrenches to avoid damaging the fittings. 2. Ensure that the square O-ring is properly seated on the sandwich plate. 3. Using a 1 1 / 4 socket, secure the sandwich plate to the oil filter threads on the oil filter pedestal using the supplied adapter screw. DO NOT overtighten (< 15 lb-ft). Tip: Lubricate the square O-ring with engine oil prior to installation to prevent O-ring damage and to ensure a reliable seal. Tip: Apply a thread sealant, such as Loctite, to the internal threads of the oil filter screw to prevent it from backing-off when removing the oil filter. 4. Connect the oil cooler system lines to the sandwich plate. Tip: Use aluminum -AN fitting wrenches to avoid damaging the fittings. Completing the Installation 1. Fill a new oil filter with oil and install the filter onto the sandwich plate. 5

6 Tip: Lubricate the oil filter seal with engine oil prior to installation to prevent damage and to ensure a reliable seal. 2. Tighten the oiling system fittings. DO NOT overtighten. Tip: Use aluminum -AN fitting wrenches to avoid damaging the fittings. 3. Check the engine oil level and add oil if needed. 4. Remove the fuel pump fuse(s) or disconnect the ignition circuit. Tip: Consult the vehicle s factory service manual for the fuse location. 5. Crank the engine over to build oil pressure. 6. Replace any fuse(s) removed and/or reconnect the ignition circuit. 7. Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks. 8. Turn-off the vehicle and inspect the engine oil level. Add oil if necessary. 9. Reinstall any underbody panels and safely lower the vehicle back onto the ground. 10. Re-inspect the oil lines and fittings for leaks after 100 miles of driving. Congratulations!
