2 Applications (C6) Chevrolet Corvette, wet sump Vehicles equipped with GM oil pan part # Installation Instructions WARNING: This product should only be installed by a qualified mechanic. Improper installation could result in severe engine damage. 1. Clean parts thoroughly with dish soap and warm water to remove any contaminants that could cause excessive engine wear. 2. Dry parts with compressed air and/or a lint-free towel. 3. Raise the vehicle and support with approved automotive frame stands, lift or wheel ramps. WARNING: NEVER work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. 4. Remove any fascia panels required to access the vehicle oil pan and oil filter. 5. Drain the engine oil pan in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle s factory service manual. Caution: Oil may be hot! 6. Remove the oil filter. Tip: Place a drain pan under the filter during removal. 7. Remove the engine oil pan in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle s factory service manual. 8. Remove the factory oil pickup tube from the oil pump and main stud using a 10 mm and 13 mm socket or wrench, shown in Figure 1, set aside. 13 mm 10 mm Figure 1 - Removing the Factory Oil Pickup Tube 9. Remove the factory windage tray by removing the remaining lock-nuts with a 13 mm socket or wrench, shown in Figure 2. 2

3 Note: The factory windage tray will not be used again. Figure 2 - Removing the factory windage tray 10. If installing the ARP Main Cap Stud Kit, follow the instructions provided with the kit. 11. Loosely secure the crank scraper to the main caps using the provided windage tray lock-nuts and a 13 mm socket or wrench. Note: Leave the lock-nuts indicated in Figure 3 detached. Using a breaker bar or large ratchet with a 24 mm (15/16 ) socket, begin to manually turn the engine over clockwise, shown in Figure 4, while carefully inspecting clearances. Tip: To make this task easier, place the transmission into neutral and loosen the spark plugs to relieve piston chamber pressure. 3

4 Figure 4 - Rotating the Engine Crankshaft a. Use a feeler gauge set, shown in Figure 5, to carefully measure the gap between the scraper and the rotating assembly in-asmany positions as possible. Please be thorough! FEELER GAUGE Figure 5 - Inspecting Rotating Assembly Clearances b. Ensure the gap is AT LEAST in every location. c. IF INTERFERENCE IS DETECTED, loosen the scraper and adjust the alignment until its clearances are at least d. In rare instances, the scraper may require filing to achieve the required clearance. 13. Torque the crank scraper lock-nuts installed during Step 11 to 18 lb-ft (24 N m) using a 13 mm socket or wrench after completing adjustments. 14. Install the oil pan baffle onto the engine main cap studs using four of the remaining lock-nuts, shown in Figure 6. Note: For factory main cap studs, center the baffle mounting holes over the studs and tighten. Adjustments can be made in Step 20. 4

5 Figure 6 - Installing Oil Pan Baffle onto Main Studs 15. Torque the lock-nuts installed during Step 14 to 18 lb-ft (24 N m) using a 13 mm socket or wrench. 16. Re-install the oil pickup tube Tip: Replace the oil pickup tube O-ring. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. Note: The pickup tube mounting hole will likely need to be enlarged for ARP main studs. Use a 7/16 drill bit. 17. Torque the oil pickup tube flange screw on the engine oil pump to 8 lb-ft (10 N m) using a 10 mm socket or wrench. Note: If using an oil pickup tube brace (Improved Racing part # EGM-500) install now and torque screw to 8 lb-ft (10 N m) using a 10 mm socket or wrench. 18. Torque the oil pickup tube lock-nut on the main cap to 18 lb-ft (24 N m) using a 13 mm socket or wrench. 19. Perform a final inspection of the scraper and baffle. Rotate the engine manually and check again for interference. 20. Verify that the oil pan baffle and oil pickup tube does not interfere with the oil pan. Note: In rare instances, the oil pan may require filing or sanding to 5

6 achieve perfect fitment. 21. Re-tighten the spark plugs to factory specifications if needed. 22. Re-install the engine oil pan in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle s factory service manual. Tip: Replace the oil pan gasket. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. 23. Refill all fluids to the factory specifications. Congratulations! The installation of your crank scraper is complete. Please read the Use and Precautions section before enjoying the benefits of this product. Use and Precautions Important! This product is designed to provide superior protection against oil starvation and oil sloshing when compared to the stock oil pan baffle. Remember that the sources of oil starvation are varied. This product will not protect your engine from oil starvation damage in all circumstances. Please follow these recommendations: Install an oil pressure gauge with a low-pressure alarm the driver can hear or see. This is critical for preventing catastrophic engine damage and will help determine the limits of your setup. We recommend overfilling the sump by ½ quart prior to track events. Always top off oil levels between track sessions. Do not allow the oil level to drop below the full mark on the engine s dipstick. If oil pressure drops still occur, consider adding an oil accumulator and overfilling the sump by up to 1 quart. Vehicles that sustain over 1.4 lateral G s (significant aerodynamic assists and/or racing compound tires) and vehicles with high shift points should use a dry sump oiling system. Exhaust smoke: When racing with an overfilled sump, it is common to see white or bluish smoke exiting the exhaust system. This is caused by excess oil entering the intake through the PCV system. We recommend installing an oil catch can on the PCV line to prevent this from happening. Draining the oil: Run the engine for about a minute before draining the oil. This reduces oil viscosity and helps drain metal particles by suspending them in the oil prior to draining. 6

7 Caution: Oil may be hot! Draining the oil with the baffle installed will take longer than usual. Allow the sump to drain for at least 10 minutes to ensure all of the oil has been removed. Pre-installed screws on crankshaft scraper: Improved Racing installs these screws as a fail-safe measure. Please do not remove these screws. The screws eliminate the remote possibility of the threaded insert becoming loose and falling into the engine. The screws remain securely in place because the threaded inserts have distorted locking threads. 7
