9 A Spool Valve Is Pilot Pressure DE-ENERGIZED POSITION ENERGIZED POSITION Single moving part (spool) that slides back in forth in a cylindrical passage Spool is moved by pilot pressure from a solenoid operator Common & Exhaust Ports are sealed off by the spool and o-rings As spool shifts, certain ports close as others are opened

23 Prepare The Pipe Use ONE loop of Teflon tape or a minimal amount of pipe dope to make a good seal Do not put tape on first 1 or 2 threads Too much tape or dope will clog the valve and cause failure!!!!

24 Pipe Installation Secure valve via wrench flats DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE TO THE CORE TUBE!!!

25 Coil Wiring 3 WIRES 2 Power wires Colors??? 1 Ground wire Green Hook the power wires to the power source NOTE: The majority of coils are NOT polarity sensitive

26 Contamination Foreign matter is the major cause of solenoid failure Once a contaminant enters into the valve, it doesn t come out!!!

28 Wear & Tear Parts wear down over time If performance begins to suffer, valve should be rebuilt or replaced

29 Replacement Parts Rebuild kits Replacement parts for pressure vessel I&M sheet is included Parts contained in rebuild kits are called out on I&M sheets

30 Replacements Coils New solenoid coil Does not include new nameplate!!!! Coil must be same enclosure type Coil can be a different voltage range Approvals will not be voided due to voltage label Do not interchange AC and DC!!! 29

31 30 Coil Life Review: What affects coil life Heat What causes temperature rise in a solenoid valve? Over-voltage High ambient or fluid temperature Damaged core tube or jammed core Excessive pressure differential Foreign matter (contamination)

32 2-Way Troubleshooting Valve fails to shift to energized position if there is: No or low voltage Burned out coil Excessive pressure Low flow or M.O.P.D. (if required) Jammed core Damaged disc or diaphragm Clogged pilot orifice Valve fails to shift to de-energized position if there is: Faulty control circuit Improper installation Scale or contamination Damaged seat or disc Binding core Damaged or missing spring Clogged bleed hole
