1 Transport sector is currently facing major challenges. Besides increasing diesel and petrol prices, there are challenges linked to reach the CO 2 reduction targets. Limiting road space and changing values are further steps towards a new era of transport strategies. One outcome of the conference will be the CARE-North statement for Rio, a contribution to the Rio+20 process to be presented by ICLEI. The host City of Bremen awaits you! The North Sea Interreg CARE North project will review these challenges during its 2012 Conference, raising the debate over carbon responsible transport strategies. Is the potential of electric mobility as significant as many think today? What is the role of car-sharing (car-clubs) in the new mobility culture? Where will the change in the image of cars lead? How significant are transportation costs to the mobility revolution? How can cities and regions implement low-carbon transport strategies? High profile international speakers, experts from CARE-North project and political representatives will express their views and insights. Innovative strategies will be presented and discussed. As fuel prices increase, high expectations are raised about alternative fuels and propulsion technologies especially electric cars. III. B A new mobility culture: use it don t own it! Car-ownership is one of the key decisions about individual transport patterns. The service of Car-Sharing (or car clubs as they are often called in the UK) offers access to a car without car-ownership. III C. Walking, cycling, collective transport affordable and appealing? A major share of daily trips is done either in a non-motorised way or collectively. Walking, cycling and public transport are crucial not only in their environmental impacts but in terms of affordability. Is it a path leading to the reduction of the carbon footprint of transport? To what extent can transport problems be solved? Göteborg presents a Swedish approach with a high commitment to CO 2 reduction. Bremen is one of the eight German model regions for electric mobility and the Dutch province of Fryslan is actively involved in both biofuel/ biogas production and electric mobility. Bremen is one of the leading cities for political and practical support of the Car- Sharing development with major benefits for the city. There are currently in Germany 200,000 Car-Sharing users represented by the German Association for Car-Sharing bcs. In Malmö, Car-Sharing plays an important role for implementing alternatively fuelled cars and the city of Aberdeen has adopted in 2011 a car club promotion programme including a call for tender for the operator. Transport costs related aspects will become more visible due to increasing fuel prices. But also CO 2 emissions have their own cost. To what extent do we have practical models to bring the costs of carbon emissions together with individual budgets? How to bring the low-cost ways of transport of walking and cycling more into the focus of transport strategies? 4

7 About the host city The city of Bremen, a traditional harbour city in the North of Germany with a half a million inhabitants, is well known for its efficient and sustainable mobility approach. A well functioning public transport including a state-of-the-art tram service makes travelling around Bremen a pleasure. This, coupled with a seamless regional ticketing and information system and cycle-friendly infrastructure, means that 60% of all trips are made using sustainable transport modes like walking, cycling and public transport. Car-sharing supplements this approach the 7000 users of the Cambio car-sharing service have resulted in more than 1,500 private cars being taken off the roads, freeing up more space for urban street life. As a result of this initiative, Bremen was invited to present their approach as urban best practice at the World Exposition 2010 in Shanghai. At the end of the day, the main aim of Bremen s mobility revolution is to improve quality of life in the city, both for its citizens and local businesses.
