AUGT$T 1931 Coal production in Canada during August amounted to 760,127 tone as compared with tie five ya.r avere for the monthof 1,336,983 tone. The Augist output consisted of 612,468 tons of bituminous coal, 105,055 Ofl8 of lignite coal and 42,604 tons of sub-bituminous coal. Mines in Nova Scotia produced 335,766 tpns;.in A.bera, 252,907 tone; in British Columbia, 141,206 tons; in Saskatchewan, 18,853 tons; and in New Brunswick, 11,395 tons. Compared with the average for the month, a decline of 19.2 per cent was recorded in the imnorts or coal; the August imports total.led 1,488,880 tons whi1..the,1v.-y.ar average was 1,842,167 tone. Anthracite importations amounted to 230,679 tons, made up of 129,912 tons from the United States, 88,361 'ons from Great Britain, and 12,406 tone from Germany. Receipts of bituminous coal were recorded at 1,258,038 tons; of which the United States supplied 1,243,106 tons and Great Britain 14,932 tons. Imports of lignite coal consisted of 163 tons cleared through British Columbia ports. Exports of Canadian coal amounted to 27,436 tons, a falling-off of 64.5 per cent from the five-year average for the month of 77,329 tone. Coal made available for consumption totalled 2,221,571 tone as against an average of 3,101,821 tens for August during the past years. During thejnonth under review the United States supplid:61.8 per cent of the total availab1 suppi.y, pana, per.,, cent, Great Britain, 4.6 per cent, and Germany, 0.6 per Cent. 1

4 COKE Production of coke in Canada during Augu8t totalled 132,017 tong. This output was at the rate of 4,259 tons per day as compared with a daily average of 4,478 tons in July and 5,866 tone in August of a year ago. Compared with the previous month, the figures for August showed a lose of 5 per cent when the output was lower In all producing areas with the exception of the western provinces where it rose slightly to 14,846 tons from 14,188 tons. In the eastern provinces output dropped to t'ne from 42,297 tone and in Ontario to 76,032 tons from 82,345 tons. Output for August included 9,956 tons of breeze of which 3,246 tone were made in the eastern provinces, 5,808 tons in Ontario and 902 tons in the west. Sales of breeze totalled 4,161 tons including 669 tone from eastern ovens, 3,144 tone from Ontario, and 348 tons by western producers. Dlspcsition of coke during August was reported by the makers at 123,463 tone, a slight increase over the total of 119,928 tone disposed of in the previous month. Coke sales commenced their seasonal advance by rising to 62,066 tons from 58,576 tone and the quantity used In coke plants was also higher at 21,570 as against 19,892 tons while the tonnage transferred to the associated smelters of the producing companies declined to 39,827 tone from 41,460 tone. Coke oven charges during the month included 42,360 tons of Canadian coal and 143,972 tons of imported coal, or a total.of 186,332 tons of coal. For the year to date oven charges aggregated 1,769,060 tons of bituminous coal to make 1,279,430 tons of coke. The apparent consumption of coke in August, as determined by deducting the exports from the sum of the production and the imports amounted to 162,214 tons when imports were reported at 33,415 tons and exports at 3,218 tons. In August, 1930, the apparent consumption was 277,052 tons, imports, 97,104 tons, and exports, 1,887 tonb. Coke charged to Iron blast furnaces during the month under review amounted to 24,799 tone to wake a total of 379,247 toss for the year to date.
