3 RETAL TRADE For the second consecutive month, estimated retail sales in Canada were slightly below the level of the previous year. The total of $1,225,367,000 was 0.2% below sales for the same month of This drop reduced the 3.3% gain. for the nine-month total, established in, to one of 3.0% for the first ten months of 1957 compared to the same period of the previous year. These and other estimates contained in this bulletin are not adjusted for seasonal variations, price changes or number of shopping days; 1956 and 1957 were similar in that both contained 4 Fridays and Saturdays and each had 26 shopping days. Final figures for 1956 have been released in sutmuary form by means of a special statement although more complete detail will only be available when the annual report "Retail Trade 1956" is published in the near future. While the relationship between 1957 and 1956 has not been materially disturbed, the 1956 net adjustment raised the dollar level approximately 17. above the estimates formerly published.
