3 COAL AND COKE STATISTICS (a) Coal Production. InDorts, ExDorts Production of coal during the month of August amounted to 781,957 tons, a decline of 1.8 per cent from the output in August, Production of coal from stripping operations in August amounted to 231,058 tons, or 29.5 per cent of the total OUtput. This was a decrease of 8.8 per cent from the strip mine output in August, Landed imports of coal during the month wider review amounted to 2,139,850 tons, a decrease of 5.2 per cent, compared with landed imports in August, Exports of coal for the cnth amounted to 30,341 tons, compared with 19,320 tons in the corresponding imnth of last year. 8 Coal and Coke 6 (b) Coke Production 1 Irnports ports Production of coke from ovens and gas retorts during the month of August, 1955, amounted to 345,788 tons, as compared with 340,288 tons in the previous month and 271,575 tons in August, Tonnage produced during the month was made up of 73,825 tons from the eastern provinces, 248,411 tons from Ontario and 23,552 tons from western Canada. Charges to ovens or retorts during the month included 87,038 tons of Canadian coal and 386,793 tons of imported coal. stocks of oven and retort coke, excluding breeze, on August 31st, 1955, amounted to 170,002 tons, of which 57,142 tons were located in the eastern provinces, 74,103 tons in Ontario and 38,757 tons in the western provinces. Stocks of breeze totalled 74,306 tons and were located across Canada as follows: 13,594 tons in the eastern provinces, 37,888 tons in Ontario and 22,824 tons in the western provinces.
