5 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Table of Contents Appendix Important Safety Information Important Safety Information Look for Safety Symbol The SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL indicates there is a potential hazard to personal safety involved and extra safety precaution must be taken. When you see this symbol, be alert and carefully read the message that follows it. In addition to design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment. Be Aware of Signal Words Signal words designate a degree or level of hazard seriousness. DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is limited to the most extreme situations, typically for machine components that, for functional purposes, cannot be guarded. WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury, and includes hazards that are exposed when guards are removed. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. Prepare for Emergencies Be prepared if a fire starts Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy. Keep emergency numbers for doctor, ambulance, hospital and fire department near phone. Be Familiar with Safety Decals Read and understand Safety Decals in Operator manual. Read all instructions noted on the decals. Keep decals clean. Replace damaged, faded and illegible decals Table of Contents Appendix 60-07Q

6 2 CTA4000 & CTA4000HD Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Avoid High Pressure Fluids Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin, causing serious injury. Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic lines. Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for suspected leaks. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems. If an accident occurs, seek immediate medical assistance from a physician familiar with this type of injury. Transport Machinery Safely Maximum transport speed for implement is 20 mph (2 kph). Some rough terrains require a slower speed. Sudden braking can cause a towed load to swerve and upset. Do not exceed 20 mph (2 km/h). Never travel at a speed which does not allow adequate control of steering and stopping. Reduce speed if towed load is not equipped with brakes. Comply with state and local laws. Do not tow an implement unless the towing vehicle is rated for, and ballasted for, the weight of the implement. Carry reflectors or flags to mark implement in case of breakdown on the road. Do not fold or unfold the implement while the tractor is moving. Practice Safe Maintenance Understand procedure before doing work. Use proper tools and equipment. Refer to this manual for additional information. Work in a clean, dry area. Lower the implement, put tractor in park, turn off engine, and remove key before performing maintenance. Make sure all system pressure is relieved. Inspect all parts. 15 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Table of Contents Appendix Setup Setup This section covers mating the implement to a compatible air cart, and final setup items on the implement. Some of these items are repeated in the cart and implement Operator s Manuals. The Operator s Manuals may also have additional setup items that may be appropriate to accomplish prior to delivery (such as installing the seed monitor in the tractor, if the tractor is available). Hitching When transported by the customer, the implement is part of a train that includes the tractor and the assembly (the cart and the implement). When hitching for pre-delivery setup, hitch the leading cart to the tractor first. Once the cart is hitched to the implement, it is usually left connected, unless parking or storage considerations require separation. This manual includes full details only for the implement s hitch. Consult the cart manual for cart-to-tractor hitching. Figure 9 Complete Assembly 2660 Equipment Damage Risk: If the tractor has a load-sensing or constant-flow hydraulic system, the implement must be equipped with an optional bypass valve to avoid tractor damage. See the CTA4000 or CTA4000HD Operator s Manual for ordering and setup information for the bypass kit. Crushing Hazard: You may be severely injured or killed by being crushed between the tractor, cart and implement. Do not stand or place any part of your body between machines being hitched. Stop tractor engine and set park brake before installing hitch pins. Cart Differences Hitching procedures depend on the cart model. 20 6 CTA4000 & CTA4000HD Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Bleeding Hydraulics To function properly, the hydraulics must be free of air. If hydraulics have not been bled, they will operate with jerky, uneven motions and could cause wings to drop rapidly during folding or unfolding. During initial implement setup complete the following procedures. Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate skin, causing serious injury. Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting or cracking hydraulic lines. Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for leaks. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems. If an accident occurs, seek immediate medical attention from a physician familiar with this type of injury. Bleed only at a JIC (Joint Industry Conference, 7 flare) or NPT (National Pipe Thread, tapered thread) fittings, and never at ORB (O-Ring Boss) fittings. Bleeding Lift Hydraulics. Check hydraulic fluid level in tractor reservoir and fill to proper level. Filling a completely empty lift cylinder set requires about 2 gallons of oil. Refer to Figure 4 2. Set valve levers for Field operation. Refer to Figure 5. With implement still unfolded, and fold cylinder rod ends still disconnected, place a support 2 under the cylinder end so extending rods will not contact anything. Note: Although the Fold cylinder valve handle is set to Field, Fold cylinders may still be activated by the Weight Transfer circuit. 4. Jack up and support implement frame high enough so opener cylinders can be fully extended. Use a jack set rated for the weight of the implement (see Appendix of Operator s Manual). 5. Fully extend opener-lift cylinders. Refer to Figure 6 6. Turn knobs, 4 on pressure-control valves completely counterclockwise, then turn them back far enough (about three clockwise turns) to build up at least 000 psi pressure per gauges 5, 6. 21 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Table of Contents Appendix Setup 7 Refer to Figure 8 7. Loosen JIC hose fittings at locations shown. 8. Slowly engage hydraulic lever, in direction that lowers openers, until oil begins to appear at loosened fittings. Continue engaging lever until all air has been expelled, then tighten that fitting. Continue to supply oil until no oil appears at loose fittings when openers are completely lowered. 9. Slowly engage hydraulic lever in direction that raises openers until oil begins to appear at loosened fittings. Continue engaging lever until all air is expelled, then tighten that fitting. Continue to supply oil until no oil appears at loose fittings when openers are completely raised. 0. Cycle openers up and down about 0 times. Each time you lower openers, hold tractor remote lever until opener-lift circuit builds up to pressure set. Refer to Figure 7. Raise openers, and lock them up by turning the Field/Transport selector valve handle to Transport. 2. Secure the rod cylinder supports and lower the implement on the jacks. Note: Leave the fold cylinders disconnected until they are bled (next section). Figure 7 Post-Bleed Lift Lockup 267 R F U D B L Figure 8 Lift Bleed Points Table of Contents Appendix 60-07Q

22 8 CTA4000 & CTA4000HD Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Bleeding Fold Hydraulics Overhead crushing hazard: To prevent serious injury or death: Fold implement only if fold hydraulics are bled free of air and fully charged with hydraulic oil. Keep away and keep others away when folding or unfolding implement. 2 Before folding, you must hitch the implement to the tractor and cart. Failure to do so could result in severe equipment damage and bodily injury or death.. Check hydraulic-fluid level in tractor reservoir and fill to proper level. Filling a completely empty fold cylinder set requires about 5 gallons of oil. Refer to Figure 9 2. If not already done for lift bleeding, with implement unfolded, disconnect rod ends of fold cylinders. Place a support 2 under the cylinder end so extending rods will not contact anything. Refer to Figure 20. Turn field/folding selector valve to fold position. Refer to Figure 2 4. Loosen rod-end fitting. 5. Slowly engage hydraulic lever as if folding implement until oil appears at loosened hose fitting. Continue engaging lever until all air has been expelled from fitting, then tighten fitting. Refer to Figure 2 6. Loosen fittings of fold cylinder as shown. 7. Slowly engage hydraulic lever, as if unfolding implement, until oil appears at loosened fittings. Continue engaging lever until all air has been expelled from fitting, then tighten fitting. 8. Cycle fold cylinders in and out 0 times. The raw hoses will be cut-to-length to connect each distribution tower inlet on the implement to a meter-box outlet on the cart. Material Loss Risk: Do not cut hose until routed over implement. Lengths in table are approximate. Actual lengths will vary from cart to cart and implement to implement. Primary Seed Hose Routing (20. cm) Refer to Figure 29, Figure 0 and Figure Hoses will be connected at the tower end, routed to the meter box, and cut to length. Review and plan each hose route. ADC250 and ADC2220/50 air carts have different numbers of seed outlets. Connect each tower to its corresponding outlet on the cart s rear meter box. The ADC250 seed meter will have one unused outlet capped. Start with tower.. Mark the expected cut location on the hose, but do not cut it prior to routing. 2. Route hose over implement frame. Run hoses for wing towers through hose holders shown.. Slide band clamp over implement end of hose, then slide hose at least two inches onto tower inlet. Allow enough hose slack so that implement raising, lowering, folding and unfolding will not pinch or bind hose. 4. Using a hacksaw, cut hose so it will slide at least two inches (5. cm) onto meter outlet. 5. Slide band clamp over cart end of hose, then slide hose onto meter outlet. Install clamp so it will not interfere with other hoses, clamps or meter-door handles. 6. Repeat step through step 5 for remaining towers, working toward the outside. 7. Secure all hoses onto implement frame using provided cable ties. Be sure hoses will not be damaged during folding. unfolding and link flexing while running over irregular ground. The raw hoses will be cut-to-length to connect each distribution tower outlet to a row unit seed tube. Do not cut hose until routed over implement. Lengths in table are approximate. Actual lengths may vary from implement to implement. Refer to Figure 2. Start with Tower (far left tower). Loosen but do not remove nuts 2 holding tower halves together. 2 Figure 2 Tower Outlet Hoses 787 Refer to Figure 2. Start with tower Port (closest to center of tower-mounting plate). 30 26 CTA4000 & CTA4000HD Table of Contents Appendix Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc.. Measure and mark expected hose length. Refer to tables beginning on page 0 for hose-length guidelines. For example, on an implement with 6 inch (5.2 cm) rows, the hose that connects tower, port to the th opener should be about 7 inches (80 cm) long. 4. Insert uncut hose into port. Push hose into port until seated against stop. 5. Route the hose to the opener called for in the table. Continuing the example from step, connect tower, port, to the th opener from the left. 6. Route hose over implement frame. Note that some hoses connect openers and towers on different frame sections. Route seed hoses to prevent rubbing on sharp edges or damage when implement is raised, lowered, folded or unfolded. 7. Allow enough hose slack for implement folding and down-flex. 8. When you are satisfied you have the proper hose length, cut hose. Refer to Figure 4 (CTA4000) or Figure 5 (CTA4000HD) 9. Connect hose boot to hose 2 by screwing hose into the boot, then connect to the seed tube by pushing the boot over the lip of the seed tube cap. 0. Repeat steps for each tower port, working clockwise around tower. When hoses have been installed in all ports, tighten bolts on tower assembly.. Proceed with next tower, moving right. When all hoses have been installed, check that seed hoses are long enough for wing flex and short enough to prevent hose damage. Hoses may need to be removed, shortened and re-inserted. 2 Figure 4 CTA4000 Hose to Seed Tube Figure 5 CTA4000HD Hose to Seed Tube Q Table of Contents Appendix
