3 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix 1 Introduction This manual is your guide to planter adjustments for achieving specific seed population, fertilizer density and treatment density targets. Although some setup/adjustment material herein is repeated from the planter Operator Manuals, you need to be thoroughly familiar with planter operations and adjustments before applying rate data from this manual. Models Covered This manual covers the following Great Plains 16-row planter models. Not all models are available in all locales. YP1630F-1630ND 30 inch, Narrow, Single row hopper YP1630F-1630NS 30 inch, Narrow, Single row hopper YP1630F-1630WD30 inch, Wide, Dual row hopper YP1630F-1630WS 30 inch, Wide, Single row hopper YP1630F-1670ND 70 cm, Narrow, Dual row hopper YP1630F-1670NS 70 cm, Narrow, Single row hopper YP1630F-1670WD70 cm, Wide, Dual row hopper YP1630F-1670WS 70 cm, Wide, Single row hopper Material Rates Refer to Figure 1 The YP1630F has three ground drive systems ( 1, 2, 3 ) and three metering systems. Two of the metering systems share a drive system. Details for rate settings, and rate charts, are found in this manual. This page provides an overview of the systems. Planting (Seed) Rate (page 2) Seed rate is controlled by Range and Transmission sprocket pairings ( 4, 5 ) on each of two separate wing ground drive systems ( 1, 2 ) and by seed meter configuration at each row ( 6, hidden by hopper). The seed monitor console reports field rates for most seed types. Fertilizer Rate (page 17) Dry fertilizer rate, from the central hopper, is controlled by a variable rate gear box 7 under the left side of the hopper. The associated ground drive 3, under the right side, has no adjustments. Fertilizer is delivered by the air system, with blockage detection at the rows. The air system must be adjusted to optimal pressure, but does not adjust rate Figure 1 Planter Drive Systems Treatment Rate (page 26, Option) Planters with the optional second row hopper can deliver a variety of granular materials with this system. Rate is controlled by a knob and dial 8 at each row. The treatment meters have an agitator roller which shares the seed drive system, but changes in seed rate sprockets have only a minor effect on treatment rate. About the Charts The rate charts are independent of planter width and row spacing. All charts except treatment are relatively insensitive to ground speed. Note: Units of Measure: This manual provides most values in dual units of measure (metric and U.S. customary) Contents Appendix B

4 2 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Seed Rate Rates are set separately for seed, fertilizer (page 17) and treatments (Option, page 26). Seed rate is determined by: 1. consulting the seed rate charts, 2. installing the correct meter (in the case of finger meters, the appropriate finger sets, inserts and brushes, and in the case of the brush meter, the appropriate seed plates), 3. setting the Range and Transmission driving/driven sprocket combinations on each wing, and 4. checking the rate. There are separate charts for brush and finger pickup meters. If you are unfamiliar with the charts, see Reading a Brush Meter Chart below or Reading a Brush Meter Chart on page 4. To change meters, see Exchanging Meters in the Operator manual. About Finger Meter Charts The charts are for meters with 12-fingers, and apply to both Corn and Sunflower configurations. Some sizes of sunflower seeds meter more reliably with the corn finger set, insert and brush. See the table below. See the Operator manual ( M) for meter reconfiguration instructions. 7 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Seed Rate 5 Seed Drive Setup With the meters set up, the rate is adjusted by separate Range and Transmission sprocket pairing at a ground drive on each wing. Sprocket Storage Refer to Figure 4 Each wing has a pair of trees 1 containing both Range and Transmission sprockets for that wing. Note: The planter includes a standard set of sprockets common to several implement models. Some sprockets may not be used in presently offered YP1630F configurations. 1 1 Figure 4 Sprocket Storage Range Setup Refer to Figure 5 Range provides coarse seed rate control, and uses only Driving:Driven sprocket combinations: 30T:20T or 30T:30T. To change Range drive: 1. Consult the seed rate chart for your crop, meter, and finger or cell count. 2. For your desired seed population, find the Range sprocket pairing at the top of the chart. 3. Loosen the tensioning idler 2 to obtain chain slack. 4. Remove the lynch pins 3 at each Range sprocket that needs to be changed. 5. Exchange sprockets with those required from the storage trees. Re-install pins. 6. Engage the idler for 6 to 7 mm ( 1 4 inch) of chain slack at longest chain span. 7. Repeat for other wing. DRIVING 2 3 Figure 5 Range Drive DRIVEN Contents Appendix B

8 6 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Transmission Setup Refer to Figure 6 Range provides fine seed rate control, and uses only pairings from Sprocket sizes: 17T, 19T, 23T, 24T, 25T, 26T, 27T, 28T Pairings are always unequal except for 23T:23T To change Range drive: 1. 6. Engage the idler for 13 mm ( 1 2 inch) of chain slack at longest chain span. 7. Repeat for other wing. Checking Planting Rate Singulated seed charts are based on cleaned and sized seed singulated with the recommended meter and wheel or finger count. Extreme seed size variations, foreign material and solid conditions can affect the planting rate. Any material difference between chart and field rates implies a mechanical malfunction, a planter setup error, unsuitable planting conditions (such as excessive wheel slippage) or extremely worn planter components. You can verify your setup and planter performance by measuring seed placement and spacing over a relatively short distance. 3 Figure 6 Transmission Drive Figure 7 Furrow Check DRIVEN DRIVING The columns to the right provide example data for a rate check, in metric units and similar example in U.S. customary units. 9 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Seed Rate 7 Checking Singulated Rates 1. Determine the sample distance to check. Find your row spacing in the table at right. 2. Note the number of rows to sample. Adjust the planting depth to a shallow setting on one or two outside rows (per table). Tie up the press wheel arms with wire or bungee to prevent furrow closure. 3. Decide whether to use 1/1000th or 1/200th of a hectare or acre as the sample size. 1/200th provides a more accurate sample. 4. Configure the planter for the chart rate, either using the chart settings for sprockets, or, with hydraulic drive, selecting the rate on the seed monitor. 5. Plant at the desired planting speed for slightly more than the computed sample run length. 6. Measure off the sample distance, balanced in between where seeding started and stopped. 7. Count the number of seeds over the distance measured. Also note the consistency of the seed spacing. 8. Compute the rate for a full acre or hectare. For a 1/1000th sample, multiply the counted seeds by For a 1/200th sample, multiply the counted seeds by If the field and chart rates vary by more than a few percent, re-check planter setup, including meter wheel or finger count, air system, tire size, tire pressures, sprocket or hydraulic drive setup, chain slack, etc. If seed spacing is irregular, this suggests a seed delivery problem, and not a rate setup problem. 10. While planting, pay attention to the seed monitor. In addition to confirming the single-row furrow check, it will also provide field rate data on all the other rows, and alert you to any irregularities or stoppages. 19 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix 17 Fertilizer Rate This section covers application of granular dry fertilizer from the central hopper. For application of granular fertilizer using the optional per-row Treatment hoppers, Treatment Rate (Option) on page 26. Refer to Figure 8 The dry fertilizer system is powered by a dedicated ground drive wheel 1, which has a lock-up capability, but no rate adjustments. Coarse fertilizer rate is set by Range gears 2 on the right side of the meter. Fine rate is set by a crank adjuster 3 on the gearbox. A second crank 4, is used for system calibration. There are four steps to obtaining the target weight of fertilizer kg per hectare (or pounds per acre): 1. Find your target rate in the charts beginning on page 22. If you have a choice of charts, for most consistent results, pick one that results in a variable rate gearbox value between 30 and If you know the density of your material, compare it to the material used to develop the chart. If they differ by more than a few percent, you may want to start with a different chart rate (see Density Adjustment on page 19). 3. Set the Final Drive Range on the meter (page 18). 4. Set the Variable Rate Gearbox (page 18). 5. Calibrate. See Fertilizer Meter Calibration on page 19. Note: The PM400 monitor can report blockage of fertilizer flow at the rows, and shaft under/over-speed, but does not measure rate. Reading a Fertilizer Rate Chart a. Choose the Low or High Range chart, favoring the chart which places your initial adjuster setting closer to the center of the 30 to 70 scale. b. Note the final Range gear sprocket combination. c. Note the reference Material Density. If your material density is significantly different from the reference material, a Density Adjustment may save time. d. Find your target field application rate in kilograms per hectare or pounds per acre. If using a Density Adjustment, you ll use different target rate to begin calibration. e. Note the suggested initial gearbox setting. x g Figure 8 Fertilizer System, Bottom View Final Drive Range Gears Mater Low Range a T Driving; 54T Driven 60.0 pound c b Material Density 0.96 kg/liter 60.0 pounds per cubic foot Material Rate kg/ha lbs/ac d Gearbox e Contents Appendix B

20 18 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Fertilizer Range Gears Refer to Figure 9 The meter flute shaft 1 is driven by the agitator shaft 2 through a pair of interchangeable gears 3, 4. The positioning of these gears creates two final drive ranges. Each rate chart is based on a specific Final Drive Range. The Ranges are: High range, which is used for higher fertilizer rates Low range, which is used for lower fertilizer rates The two seed meter shafts are labelled DRIVING and DRIVEN. The DRIVING shaft is the upper/forward shaft. The DRIVEN shaft is the lower/rear shaft. Refer to the Seed Rate Chart (or Fertilizer Rate Chart), the table below, and Figure 9 for setting the seed meter final drive range. 1. Remove the lynch pins from the gear ends of both shafts. 2. Remove and position the gears as shown in the table above. 3. Secure with lynch pins. Variable Rate Gearbox The variable rate gearbox allows an arbitrarily variable meter drive speed to attain a wide range of metering rates. The ratio of gearbox input speed to output speed is controlled by the position of a gearbox control arm. The control arm has an indicator that points to a scale marked in degrees. The Fertilizer Rate Charts show the rate for each degree setting. Refer to the rate charts and set the variable rate gearbox control arm to its scale setting for the target rate. To adjust the Variable Rate Gearbox: Refer to Figure Remove the hairpin cotter 5 securing the gearbox adjustment crank Rotate crank until the control arm indicator 7 points to the scale setting that matches the rate from the chart, or as determined by calibration. 3. Re-insert the hairpin cotter. Note: The variable rate gearbox operates optimally between 30 and 70. If your rate is listed on both the Low Range and High Range charts, select the chart where your rate results in a gearbox control arm setting between 30 and 70. s below 20 degrees are not recommended. When the control arm is set above 70 degrees, large movements of the arm result in small changes in rate. 4 1 DRIVEN 3 2 Figure 9 HIGH Final Drive Range DRIVING FINAL DRIVE RANGE DRIVING DRIVEN LOW RANGE 17 Tooth Small 54 Tooth Large HIGH RANGE 54 Tooth Large 17 Tooth Small 6 5 Figure 10 Variable Rate Gearbox at B Contents Appendix

21 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Fertilizer Rate 19 Fertilizer Meter Calibration The rate charts are based on dry fertilizer with a density of 0.96 kg/liter (60 pounds per cubic foot). Material of a different density will meter at a proportionately different rate. Heavier material has a higher rate for the same setting. Lighter has a lower rate for the same setting. Material with a different particle shape or cohesion may meter at a slightly different rate, even if the density matches the charts. Great Plains strongly recommends calibrating for the exact material you intend to apply. Adjusting first for density may allow the calibration to arrive at your desired rate with fewer samples. 2 1 Figure 11 Gearbox and Calibration Crank Density Adjustment If your material density differs from the chart value by more than a few percent, pick a different initial chart rate, on an inverse proportion basis: ChartDensity AdjustedRate = FieldRate FieldDensity Example Density Adjustment: Desired FieldRate: 104 kg/ha Default chart gearbox setting: 43 Material ChartDensity: 0.96 kg/l Actual material FieldDensity: 1.2 kg/l Density ratio: 0.80 = AdjustedRate: 83.2 = Start with the settings for a rate of Nearest chart rate is: 85.2 Adjusted initial gearbox setting: Contents Appendix B

22 20 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Calibration Steps Possible Agricultural Chemical Hazards: Obey manufacturer or grower recommendations for safety equipment and protective gear when working with and around fertilizer. 1. Load enough fertilizer for at least 1 10 hectare (or 1 10 acre) plus an extra 35 to 45 Kg (75 to 100 pounds). Note: Do NOT run the fan during calibration. 2. Determine the initial Range and Gearbox settings from charts, with any density adjustment. 3. Set the Range gears (page 18). 4. Set the Gearbox arm (page 18). Refer to Figure 11 on page Un-pin the calibration crank 1 at its storage location 2. Re-pin it on the calibration crank shaft Empty the calibration bag (part number C). Check that the digital scale (part number C) is operating correctly. Refer to Figure At the base of the meter, open the calibration Attach the bag. 8. Operate the calibration crank for a few turns, until fertilizer fills the meter flutes and is smoothly flowing into the bag. Stop. Remove the bag. Note: A clicking sound from the ratchet sprocket in the ground drive is normal. The ground drive wheel should not turn. 9. Empty the bag into the hopper. Weigh the empty bag. 10. Re-attach the bag to the meter. 11. Operate the crank, at one to two revolutions per second, for the number of revolutions shown in the table at right. Machine Damage and Rate Risks: Rotate calibration crank only in the COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction. Operating in reverse can cause gearbox damage. Note: A longer calibration is always more accurate, especially for low rates and small seeds hectare or acre is easy to calculate and is a minimum calibration run. Figure 12 Calibration Door Open Loss of Material Risk: Do not open the door under the DRIVING gear. This is the clean-out door. Opening this door drains the hopper. Once the clean-out door is open it is difficult to stop material flow until the hopper is empty, and impossible to close it with a seal tight enough for application. BagWeight: The C bag, when clean and empty, weighs: 1.52 Kg (3.36 lbs) Crank Revolutions for 1 10 hectare 1 10 acre YP1630F YP1630F B Contents Appendix

23 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Fertilizer Rate 21 The right column contains the starting values of an example for the following steps, in Metric and U.S. customary ( USc ) units. 12. Accurately weigh the bag plus material. Subtract the empty bag weight to determine the application rate for 1 10 hectare (or 1 10 acre). SampleWeight = GrossWeight BagWeight 13. Multiply the sample size by 10 to determine application rate per hectare (acre) at the current variable rate gearbox setting. CalibratedRate = SampleWeight 10 If the calibrated rate matches the target rate, skip to step 18. Otherwise 14. Determine a ratio to use for a new setting. FieldRate CorrectionFactor = CalibratedRate Note: The effect of the gearbox adjuster is nearly linear in the 30 to 70 range of the scale. 15. Subtract the calibrated rate per hectare (or acre) from the target rate to determine a correction difference. NextGearbox = PriorGearbox CorrectionFactor 16. Adjust the control arm by the number of degrees needed to adjust for the calibration difference. 17. Run the calibration again, starting at step 9, using the new Variable Rate Gearbox scale setting. This validates the gearbox adjustment. 18. Remove and store the calibration crank. Wipe down the calibration door, seal and lower face of meter. Close the calibration door. Empty the bag into the hopper. This completes fertilizer rate calibration. Metric Example: Application FieldRate: 104 kg/ha Density AdjustedRate: 83.2 USc Example: Application FieldRate: 93 pounds per acre Density AdjustedRate: 74.4 Initial (adjusted) Variable Rate Gearbox setting: Empty Calibration BagWeight: 1.52 Kg 3.36 lbs Metric Example: GrossWeight is: 11.2 kg SampleWeight = which is: 9.67 Kg Metric Example: CalibratedRate = which is: 96.7 kg/ha USc Example: GrossWeight is: 8.6 pounds SampleWeight = , which is: 8.6 pounds USc Example: CalibratedRate = , which is: 86 lbs/ac This is lower than our target field rate of: 104 kg/ha 93 lbs/ac Metric Example: FieldRate: 104 CorrectionFactor = , which is: 1.08 (108%) USc Example: FieldRate: 93 CorrectionFactor = 93 86, which is: 1.08 (108%) The calibration run metered too little. You must raise the gearbox setting to compensate. Example: PriorGearbox: 39 NextGearbox = which is: 42 Note: The rate of the arm adjusting crank is more than one scale degree per turn, and the crank can only be pinned at quarter turns. 28 26 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Treatment Rate (Option) This section covers application of granular dry treatments using the optional on-row treatment hoppers. Treatments may include insecticide, herbicide and other small granular or pelletized materials. Agricultural Chemical Hazard: Follow all chemical supplier precautions for handling treatments. Wear protective equipment prescribed for the current material, and for all previous materials used since last thorough hopper clean-out. Read and follow material label directions. Obtain and retain MSDS a information for the present and recent materials. Many treatments are extremely hazardous and can cause disabling or fatal injury. Refer to Figure 13 and Refer to Figure 14 on page 27 Treatment application rate is determined by a combination of: meter dial 1 setting (which controls the meter gate 2 opening), and field speed (application rate is inversely proportional to field speed). The system may be uncoupled at the clutch 3 if no treatment is being applied. The treatment meter has an agitator powered by the seed meter drive, but treatment application rate is relatively b insensitive to agitator rpm. There are four steps to obtaining the target treatment weight in kg per hectare (or pounds per acre): 1. Find your target rate, for your planned field speed, in the charts beginning on page Perform a Gate Calibration (see Operator manual) at the start of each season, or if one or more rows is metering at unexpected rates. 3. Perform a Rate Calibration (page 28). 3 1 Figure 13 Treatment Hopper and Meter a. MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet b. Finer materials with low cohesion may flow when the planter is stopped. Set meters to 00 to prevent material loss B Contents Appendix

29 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Treatment Rate (Option) 27 Treatment Compatibility Refer to Figure 14 (which depicts a bottom view of the meter housing and gate, with gate retainer removed for clarity) Flow rate is controlled by tapered opening 2 in the adjustable gate. Use only granular materials that flow easily and which have a maximum particle dimension smaller than: 4.8 mm ( 3 16 inch, 0.19 inch) maximum dimension. Materials larger than this cannot pass through the slot in the meter housing, at any meter setting. Materials with a maximum particle dimension of: 1.4 mm ( 3 64 inch, 0.59 inch) or less can flow at meter setting 5 and above. Materials from 1.4 mm to 4.8 mm encounter a lower gate setting limit at which they can flow. The material rate goes to zero before reaching meter setting Figure 14 Treatment Metering Gate Reading a Treatment Rate Chart Refer to chart excerpts at right. 1. Find the chart for your material a and row spacing b. Note: If there is no chart for your specific material, use any chart and rely on Rate Calibration to determine a final meter setting. 2. Find a column for the field speed c at which you intend to plant and/or apply treatment. If your exact speed is not listed, rely on Rate Calibration to determine final meter setting. 3. Find your intended application rate e (TargetRate in the examples) in kg/ha or lbs/ac in the selected speed column. 4. Find the suggested initial dial value f in the Meter column. This is PriorDial in the examples. Columns are also provided for single row rates. These are useful for estimating sample sizes during Rate Calibration, and may be useful should you desire to create your own charts for alternate speeds. The data at right is used in the example calibration calculations on page 29. 30 28 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix YP1630F Treatment Rate Calibration Treatment Rate calibration is different from treatment Gate calibration. Gate calibration is a seasonal activity, and is described in the Operator manual. Rate calibration requires: a precise scale for small weight values (the digital scale provided for fertilizer calibration may be too coarse); small plastic bags for sample collection at each row; and, a representative field on which a 1000 m or 1000 foot pass can be made, with openers in the ground, at your intended planting/application speed. Treatment Rate Calibration Steps 1. Move the planter to the edge of the test field area. 2. Mark a course of known length that is at least 300 m in length. A course of exactly 1000 m or 1000 feet simplifies calculations. 3. Determine the rows to sample for treatment rate calibration. A sample of three rows improves the reliability of the sample data. 4. Set the treatment meters for these rows to 00. Refer to Figure Disengage the treatment drive clutches 3 at all other rows. If the tested rows are all on the same wing, lock up the ground drive for the other wing. See the Operator manual for drive couple and ground drive lock-up details. 6. Disengage all seed meter clutches not already disabled by lock-up. Disengage all treatment meter clutches at rows not being tested (unless disengaged by drive lock-up). 7. Lock up the fertilizer ground drive. 8. Lower the planter rows into the ground. Wear protective equipment for this and all following steps. 9. At the rows identified in step 3, load a small amount of treatment material, about twice the amount expected to be metered over the course length. The charts, starting on page 30, show the kg or ounces expected for one row. Agricultural Chemical Hazard: Follow all chemical supplier precautions for handling treatments. Wear protective equipment prescribed for the current material, and for all previous materials used since last thorough hopper clean-out. Read and follow material label directions. Obtain and retain Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information for the present and recent materials. Many treatments are extremely hazardous and can cause disabling or fatal injury. Figure 15 Treatment Drop Tube Mis-application Risk: Speed and distance matter. Treatment flow (per minute) is proportional to meter gate opening (dial setting), but is relatively constant per minute, which makes it inversely proportional to field speed. Further, material is flowing during initial acceleration, at a higher net rate. Sample collection must be performed at actual intended planting/application speed, or the calibrated meter setting will not provide the desired application rate. The sample must also be collected over a sufficient distance to minimize errors due to the elevated rate at start up B Contents Appendix

31 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix Treatment Rate (Option) Weigh the empty plastic bags. Record this number for use at step 22. The sum of these weights is the: BagWeights Collect A Treatment Sample Refer to Figure 15 on page At the sampling rows identified in step 3, wearing suitable protective equipment, remove the diffuser Securely attach an empty plastic bag to the tube. Refer to Figure Set the treatment meter dials 1 to the initial setting from the charts, or the NextDial setting to be sampled. Make a note of this setting, as it is needed in calculations. 14. Start the tractor. Accelerate briskly to field speed. Stop at the end of the course. 15. Set the dials to 00 on the sampled rows, to prevent further material from dribbling into the sample bags. 16. Wearing suitable protective equipment, remove, weigh and record the weight of the sample bags. Empty each bag back into its hopper. Calculate the Treatment Rate The examples used are based on the application example data from page 27, and the empty bag weights from step Remove and weigh all the sample bags. This is the: GrossWeight 18. Determine net weight of metered material. TotalN etweight = GrossWeight BagWeights 19. Determine the net weight per row: TotalNetWeight RowNetWeight = SampleCount 20. Use a scaling factor to determine the TestRate: 70 cm Hectare scaling factor: inch Acre scaling factor: TestRate = RowNetWeight ScalingFactor 21. Determine the percent deviation (a correction factor): TargetRate Deviation = TestRate 22. Use the correction factor to determine the next dial setting to test: NextDial = PriorDial Deviation 23. If the deviation is less than 1.5%, or within your own allowable tolerances, calibration is complete. Otherwise, run another test, using the calculated NextDial setting, starting at step 12. 41 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Contents Appendix 39 Appendix Finger Meter Brush Adjustment The brush reduces or eliminates doubles (delivering two seeds per finger), but if set too aggressively can cause skips (delivering no seed on some fingers). As needed, adjust for minimal doubles and skips. Refer to Figure 17 The adjustable brush provides additional flexibility to accommodate a wide range of seed sizes. Use lever L to gently rotate the brush into position. The settings range from 1 to 5 with detents at each half step, for a total of 9 detents. Although the numbers are molded into the meter housing, only 1 and 5 may be visible.to ensure consistency, rotate the lever fully counter-clockwise 1, and count detents as you advance it to the desired setting. Use the general guidelines in the table below to adjust the brush position to your seed size and shape. The numbers listed correspond to the numbers printed on the outer housing of your meter. If there is a decal on your meter, its units are in pounds per seed bag. The table below includes seeds per pound and seeds per kilogram. L Figure 17 Finger Meter Brush Lever Note: These instructions describe the current finger pickup meter shipped with new Great Plains planters, which has an integrated adjustment lever for the brush. If you have added pre-existing finger meters after purchase, there is some chance that you may have the previous model meter, adjusted by screwdriver rather than lever. If so, rely on counting detents to determine the setting. Not all have 9 detents.
