3 1 Connecting The System Digital Connections Connect audio connections as shown in the diagram below. Coaxial S/PDIF cables must be connected from an APS S/PDIF output to the 328 S/PDIF input and vice versa. NOTE Either the S/PDIF connections on the E-Card or the E-Drive may be used, but the APS S/PDIF Output must be connected to the 328 S/PDIF Input. APS S/PDIF Out 328 S/PDIF In 328 S/PDIF Out APS S/PDIF In Other Connections Besides the audio connections, the APS enables the 328 MIDI In and Out to be connected to the PC for automation of the 328 via software sequencers. 328 MIDI Out APS MIDI In APS MIDI Out 328 MIDI In NOTE The APS Gameport plate must be installed in the PC with an appropriate Gameport MIDI converter/lead connected. 2 Spirit Digital 328 v2

4 Digital 328 Setup 2 Wordclock The APS cannot be altered from a wordclock master state, and so consequently when used with the APS the 328 must be configured as the wordclock slave. To configure the Digital 328 as the wordclock slave, enter the 328 Menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the Clock Source Sel menu is highlighted, and press <ENTER>. Here, External Clock received at the S/PDIF input must be selected as the source. Use the encoder to select External: SPDIF, press <ENTER> to set the sample rate and <MENU> to return to the menu pages. <Wordclock Src.> External: SPDIF S/PDIF Input The S/PDIF Input on the console must be routed to a suitable destination. The available options are one of the 2 Stereo Inputs, one of the 2 FX Returns or as a Digital 2Track Return. Note that selecting one of these destinations will override an analogue signal present at that input. So, the input which should be used will depend on which other inputs are connected. It is likely that the most suitable input would be either Stereo 2 or as a digital 2 Track Return. Enter the menu pages by pressing the <MENU> button on the right hand side of the LCD display. Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the SPDIF I/P Setup menu is highlighted and press <ENTER>. Using the encoder select the input required and press <ENTER>. For example < SPDIF Input > Route To: STE-2 or < SPDIF Input > Route To: 2TRK S/PDIF Output Similarly, the S/PDIF Output from the console must be routed from a suitable source. The available options are Auxiliary Ouput 1/2, 3/4 FX 1/2 or the Mix output. If the Auxiliary or FX Outputs are selected, they are used as a stereo source, 1 acting as the left channel and 2 acting as the right channel. If an Auxiliary output is selected, both the S/PDIF digital output and the analogue sends will be active. 3

Using the encoder beneath the display, scroll up or down until the SPDIF O/P Setup menu is highlighted and press <ENTER>. Using the encoder select the output required and press <ENTER>. For example < SPDIF Output > Src From: AUX1/2 or < SPDIF Output > Src From: MIX NOTE In addition for both S/PDIF Input and Output, an option of Nowhere is available as a destination or source. Configuring APS S/PDIF I/O E-MU APS Setup 3 The APS must be configure using the E-Control mixer to determine which S/PDIF Input and Output is being used. The below illustrations indicate an example setup for the 328 connected to the E-Card. To configure the output, open the E-Control Mixer, click on the Analog Out 1+2 and select the relevant S/PDIF output for the 328 connection. 5

By clicking on the which appears. icon, Disk Record should be selected from the drop-down menu Wordclock The APS is only configured to be Wordclock Master at a sample rate of 48kHz, although it has sample rate conversion on the S/PDIF inputs and ouputs. Consequently work can be carried out on the PC at different sample rates, although output is converted to 48kHz. 7
